Hi from Canada/Documentaries on Mr. Russell have, of course, been broadcast here./My favourite scene is where he tells a big male bear to go away (the bear doesn't.) So what does Mr. Russell do? He sprays it -- with pepper spray! (Poor bear -- did it run!)/Thank you for posting these images (and the music, too.) We have done lots of damage to bears (in BC last year they killed 13 of them -- they came too close to golf courses of all things!) Now we should help them./Cheers
Doesn't coming in close contact with these bears alter the bears natural insticts to flee when they see humans? They'll be less likely to flee from danger when poachers and hunters come along and will present an easy target. I don't know.. I think humans shouldn't approach bears so much. Good intentions or not.
really? they put this song in a video game? Cool... I also heard it being played, of all places, on the trailer for "citizen bronco", a terrible movie.
I like anyone that goes out on a limb to help animals - not to the point of PETA who are just bat shit crazy - but in a realisitic sense. The fact PETA are against people who ride horses or who have pets is just mental.
Good on this bloke - something wrong with people who hunt animals - close to serial killers really.
Also bears are predators, they didn't talk to each other and decide to attack humans at some point, they can't communicate on that level, they're simply predators that do what all predators do, kill and eat things that move.
Invincible and mighty Siberian bear, character of our great country and russian people. In an explanatory dictionary V.Daly., for a brown bear 2000 titles are adduced more than! So:)
This brings tears to my eyes. I've lived in the wild with bears and wolves and have never attempted any of this - as NONE of us should. Charlie has an indisputable rapport with these bears, and so did Farley Mowat: read his book "Never Cry Wolf". I read it as a child living in the wilderness of western Canada. The end of the novel was enough to tell me that human contact with these mammals NEVER serves them well. Appreciate the videos/books, but do not try this at home, folks.
It's about time someone came forward and posted this wonderful video. It shows the true disposition of the bear. The media likes to sensationalize stories about bears to sell newspapers.
Really enjoyed the documentary on this tonight, fell in love with the man, his kindness and gentle, loving spirit and the bears he loves, I cried when he had to let them go. A very touching and wonderful film. Beautiful place in Russia! Thanks for sharing, I understand it is scheduled to run again on 4/9/09 on the animal planet channel. Don't miss it!
this is what i love human loving and helping animals, he has all his world blessed by God, hope people in asia act more like this, and not killing beautiful animals like the bears tigers etc.
this is what i love human loving and helping animals, he has all his world blessed by God, hope people in asia act more like this, and not killing beautiful animals like the bears tigers etc.
first, the bears are not grizzli as it is said in the information. they are ordinary brown bears, much less agressive. still, it's amasing the adult bears allow people to be with the cubs. somehow those people found their own econiche in kamchatkan ecosystem. lol! joking!
I wish I had a father like Charlie Russell, he seems so intelligent and kind.
One of the bears were named Melisse, meaning small man in Russian.
Now, whenever a guy in my school says a racistic joke, I just say Melisse and walk away. That man whom judge people basing on their looks will always be a small man.
Just watched it to and i must say i admire this guy alot, devoting his old days to change the way we think of bears and in that way hopefully save alot of em. Respect...
i just watched the documentary on this guy. i love him, and the bears are hilarious. that being said, does anyone else fear for his safety? seriously this guy has a daily standoff with giant bears.
it's Kamchatka peninsula on the russian far east-north. it borders Chukotka and Chukotka is separated from Alaska (US) by Bering straits. in fact, vast regions of Kamchatka are declared natural reservations including famous Valley of Geysers. that's why wild life is flourishing in Kamchatka despite harsh northern climate.
probaly the most important thing is to save are planet and hes tryen this is better then saveing a few human lifes people think thats the most important but wat about the thing that gave us life earth and besides u save earth u save humans were killing are selves right now
Charlie Russell knows his stuff; he takes no stupid chances; he knows these animals thoroughly and knows which ones he can approach. He is different, in that respect, from Timothy Treadwell. Charlie also takes proper precaustions, carrying bear pepper spray and using electric fencing around his cabin. He's fantastic and his work is so important.
Charlie Russell respected Treadwell and knew that he knew the risk. He respects Treadwell's work and hates Werner Herzog. I read it on a eulogy.
I like Charlie and he's a good guy, with a great heart and a kindred soul. I like Timothy too; they're both awesome. I personally like Treadwell's work better, although. But that doesn't mean I don't love Charlie! I respect them both, and they're both caring, kind beings. Rip Tim and ROCK ON CHARLIE!
the guy is amazing for what he does and goes through raising abandon cubs as a mother bear would in the wild. and is even willing to put himself in danger for the cubs with nothing but pepper spray
i've seen the docu abt this guy. hes got a funny accent. now i remembered that canadian director who visited here in ireland. my classmates were disrespectful nd laughing when he speaks coz of his accent. evrytym i hear that kinda accent i know that person is a gentle, nice person.
i love this guy; he has so MUCH to teach others about the bears he treats as if they were his children. he has no fear of the bears yet knows he can go just so far with them.
WHile it would be interesting to hang out with him for a day, in the long run it would prove dangerous. For Heaven's sake, he isn't St. Francis. Wild animals are just that: wild! All it takes is one accident to be reminded of that.
Can someone please help me? I saw "Walking with Giants" on "The Nature of Things", but have had absolutely no luck in obtaining my own copy; I can only find US vendors and they won't ship to Canada! (I'm in Ontario) I'm also finding the same problem with trying to obtain a copy of Mr. Russell's book, Grizzly Seasons. Would anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way, if anyone is considering reading Grizzly Heart - one of the most touching stories ever.
The relationship Charlie has with his bears is beautiful beyond words. Sadly, this does not feel like the same planet I live on, where day after day, I hear of more animal abuse ... in the name of the almighty dollar.
Goddess, bless you Charlie!!! This planet needs to learn the wisdom of love from you and others like you.
Majestic creatures, grizzlies, and the documentary was one of the most moving, informative and interesting that I had ever seen. Footage was great with a beautiful score, and Charlie is a salt-of-the-earth type that has my total respect. I am hoping he is continuing with his work and does not tire of it.
I was in awe when I saw the documentary. It was on real late on animal planet and normally I am asleep but for some reason I was up and watching tv. My roommates and I were amazed and mesmerized. It is an awesome story, I would love to own a copy of the documentary to show it to others!

Also nice to see that not all bears wear uniforms and play football for Chicago. ^.^
All stupid, lame humor on my part aside here... this is pretty amazing stuff that you don't see everyday seen in this video. (Ever the king of the obvious that I am). Even the music work nicely with this sort of image montage sequence. VERY nice (and unique) video post, to be sure.
Why thank you! You made my day. :D Charlie Russell is an amazing dude. He is working well on his way towards changing the way we percieve bears forever.
Yes, the ancestor of modern bears split off from the canids around 20 million years ago. They do indeed appear very similar to canids especially in their muzzles.
I actually wrote to Charlie after watching his special and he wrote me back! What a very kind, ordinary, compassionate man. God Bless him and his Bears.
Thank you for this beautiful video. What happened to those bears is really sad, and typical of the human nature... I loved the song, can you tell me please what is the name, and which artist it is ? Thanks
This was such a wonderful video and the music was beautiful. A unique but great individual who as you said was one of kind. I love bears and to see them hurt it greatly upsets me, as they epitimize everything that's so great about nature, being wild, free and pure. Man has become so out of touch with nature that he threatens to kill anything he comes in contact with when confronted by it. This video shows the beauty of bears and how important it is to protect them and thier natural environment.
Yes, he has successfully raised and released numerous cubs into the wild with no problems or negative behavior. He is actually the first man who has successfully done this with grizzlies. Before him most thought it was impossible, but his revolutionary methods have proven successful. He has a way of feeding them that does not "habituate" them to people and he also teaches them to fish just like a foster "mother". Remarkable feats for a man in his late 60s.
Yes, it is indeed very sad what happened to Chico and Biscuit, two among Charlie's first and favorite bears he ever raised, and a tragic story of betrayal, it was actually the chopper pilot he knew and trusted to fly him into that camp that later flew in poachers and showed them where to find his bears, who trusted and did not fear humans. People are extremely poor in Russia but still that in no way justifies such a despicable thing to have done.
Apparently Charlie has suspicions that the poachers were hired by the park warden he got fired for poaching in Kamchatka, the place he was supposed to protect.
What?? Is that really true, that it was the chopper pilot he knew? How very, very, tragic. Sorry; I just had to comment - I watched Mr. Russell's documentary and read Grizzly Heart recently and I can honestly say that nothing has reached me, ever, the way this story has. It breaks my heart that someone that he knew and trusted could betray them all in such a way.
Thanks for posting this video. Excellent musical selection along with a professional compulation and arrangement of the bear pics. Video's like this are important to help show that Bears are not monsters but for the most part gental giants.
