It's hard to call it a tradition when the killings are done in secrete, covered up, and the meats sold as whale meat instead of dolphin meat. If you want to claim that hunting and eating whales is tradition, then by all means, catch them in a traditional way, riding wooden boat and throwing spears like some native americans. Japanese politicians are making fuss that international group should condemn Chinese for the extinction of Yangtze River dolphin(Baji).
Truth is:
Chinese has never intentionally consumed river dolphin for food. Even Chinese kids know the meat is highly poisoned, only people wanting to commit suicides would give it a try. No formal suppliers could be possibly found.
Early in 1975, a breeding program has been initiated to allow the species to recover and be reintroduced. It was spotted in 2004.

It's hard to call it a tradition when the killings are done in secrete, covered up, and the meats sold as whale meat instead of dolphin meat. If you want to claim that hunting and eating whales is tradition, then by all means, catch them in a traditional way, riding wooden boat and throwing spears like some native americans. Do not massacre a population of whales for money and call it a tradition.

If consuming whales is a tradition, why are so many whales being killed when the number of whale meat consumers is very low? Why do japanese government export whale meats? Things don't add up considering it as tradition, which is why i mentioned the boat. What some japanese fishermen are doing have nothing to do with tradition. they're doing it for the money. plain and simple.

You have misundertood. You have claimed that eating whale meat is a tradition in japan. I'm fine with that. But the number of whales being killed doesn't seem to support that these whales are being killed just for the tradition, given that 1) number of consumers are low, 2) dolphin meats are sold as whale meat, 3) meats are being exported to different places. All these things lead me to believe that this massacre has very little to do with tradition.

Rather, it seems to me that they are in it for the money. I'm not saying it's bad to make money, but I think one should be truthful when dealing with this kind of issue. So I don't think this kind of act can be justified by tradition. And no, i am not familier with japanese tradition. That's why i wrote that statement as conditional statement.

I do not know if they export them as dolphin meat or whale meat, but they are being sold as whale meat in Korea. We recently had a document program exposing this. Once again, this is just to show you how it's at odd with the whole tradition argument.

Tradition of a country should be respected. You're right. But the moment the tradition comes into a conflict with others, then we need to reevaluate the value of this tradition. Should we keep it and let it possibly harm others, or should we try to find some compromise? I'm not saying Japanese shouldn't eat whale meat, but if they're going to hunt whales, then the government needs to control them better than they are doing right now.
