  • I'd say the original was like a battle cry, and this version is more of a party.

Both versions kick equal amounts of ass.

  • What a great song!

  • Melvins and Wipers are both fucking amazing.

  • kickass

  • Melvins rock. what album is the other version on?

  • @TheGorgorothSpire: The Wipers song is on their recod 'Youth Of America'.

  • @RHutton2710 thanks a lot

  • Both versions kick ass! End of discussion! and the Melvins just plain rock, one of my most fav bands ever!

  • i just want to be happy

  • it's at pretty much the same tempo guys, more faithful to the original than I would think, just another band with different musicians playing it and a different guy singing it. i still prefer the original though by miles

  • This song is fun and heavy. Great solos, and drummer keeps the beat for 9 minutes. So much to love.

  • Oh man, this song is so fucking great!

  • I have posted the "Youth of America" in its entirety on my channel, I love the Melvins but the original is far better and more themeatic.

  • I love hardcore. I love doom. Combined them you get sludge eh? Well..no. I can't say I like it.

  • @ahhhitsrob Not really a sludge song, more like a cover of a weird (but awesome) punk song

  • @monkeymagoo47 thank you for commenting on my comment. Listening back, I like this A LOT more than I did three months ago.

  • @ahhhitsrob glad I can help! Thing about the Melvins is, listening to their music is a lot like sex: at first, you don't really know what to do, then you fucking love it

  • great cover, but the original is almost impossible to surpass in its urgency and passion

  • Youth of America

  • best song ever

  • As a huge fan of Waylon Jennings.. I LOVE this shit !!!!

  • I had my first car crash to this song.

  • the original is far better....

  • Godfather of Punkrock...Thanx for this... ( Wipers make it real...)

  • Along with Hüsker Dü doing Eight Miles High, it's a great cover !

  • i saw them play this live. it was wild to say the least

  • While I agree that the original is great on its own merits, I believe the Melvins create a new appreciation for what an incredible composition the song is.

  • i think both are in different leagues honestly. the original is a powerful call to arms aimed at, well, the youth of america. the Melvins cover has been given the Melvins treatment, and is a really neat rocking jam that's more for enjoyment and appreciation of the cover. at least it feel that way to me, so i wouldn't compare them

  • This has more energy in it than the original version. I like it more.

  • @SonicYouthXXX: Noooo! Don't let's start this up again.

  • Its good, but the original tops it. Gregs voice just sounds better, and the chorus on this one.....just doesn't capture the desperation somehow...

  • @mrdanielsir: well, yeah; but Buzz et al were never really known for taking life too seriously. Probably for the best given what happened to most of their peers.

I don't see that it matters which version is best: both were great; so let's stop debating the matter, crank the volume up, and rock out serenely to two of the best bands America ever produced.

  • @RHutton2710 what did happen to their peers

  • @thedude9099 heroin.

  • I love the Melvins but there's no way this is better than the original. Anyone who knows the Wipers knows it's all about Greg's tone and the atmosphere he creates.

  • @HoosierMF: fair enough. I still think 'Taking too long' is the wipers' finest moment though.

  • Amazing how cover can be much better than the original... even if original is awesome!

  • @Hobbit85BB: some covers are superior to the originals. Have a listen to Jawbox's song 'static' and then to My Vitriol's cover; or Nirvana's version of 'Son of a gun' versus the vaselines' original.

I agree that the wipers were terrific though.

  • @RHutton2710

Wall of voodoo -"ring of fire"

    Metallica - "So fucking what"

Ghoul - "What a wonderful world"

Led Zepellin - "Baby I'm gonna leave you"

    Mastodon - "Orion"

    Coroner - "I want you"

etc, there are an effin lot

  • @julesickdrums: not all to my taste, my friend. But fair enough.

  • Melvins sound like Iron Maiden in this one!!!

  • fuckyeah
