it's at pretty much the same tempo guys, more faithful to the original than I would think, just another band with different musicians playing it and a different guy singing it. i still prefer the original though by miles
@ahhhitsrob glad I can help! Thing about the Melvins is, listening to their music is a lot like sex: at first, you don't really know what to do, then you fucking love it
While I agree that the original is great on its own merits, I believe the Melvins create a new appreciation for what an incredible composition the song is.
i think both are in different leagues honestly. the original is a powerful call to arms aimed at, well, the youth of america. the Melvins cover has been given the Melvins treatment, and is a really neat rocking jam that's more for enjoyment and appreciation of the cover. at least it feel that way to me, so i wouldn't compare them
@mrdanielsir: well, yeah; but Buzz et al were never really known for taking life too seriously. Probably for the best given what happened to most of their peers.
I don't see that it matters which version is best: both were great; so let's stop debating the matter, crank the volume up, and rock out serenely to two of the best bands America ever produced.
I love the Melvins but there's no way this is better than the original. Anyone who knows the Wipers knows it's all about Greg's tone and the atmosphere he creates.
@Hobbit85BB: some covers are superior to the originals. Have a listen to Jawbox's song 'static' and then to My Vitriol's cover; or Nirvana's version of 'Son of a gun' versus the vaselines' original.
I'd say the original was like a battle cry, and this version is more of a party.
Both versions kick equal amounts of ass.

This song is fun and heavy. Great solos, and drummer keeps the beat for 9 minutes. So much to love.

Oh man, this song is so fucking great!

I have posted the "Youth of America" in its entirety on my channel, I love the Melvins but the original is far better and more themeatic.

I love hardcore. I love doom. Combined them you get sludge eh? Well..no. I can't say I like it.
ahhhitsrob 5 months ago
@ahhhitsrob Not really a sludge song, more like a cover of a weird (but awesome) punk song

@monkeymagoo47 thank you for commenting on my comment. Listening back, I like this A LOT more than I did three months ago.

Its good, but the original tops it. Gregs voice just sounds better, and the chorus on this one.....just doesn't capture the desperation somehow...
