  • I don't know Dan, but he AKWAYS came across like a guy who would take you aside work with you on stuff just because you asked him. He just has that "nice guy"vibe that is so needed, but sorely lacking today in the martial arts. I wish I'd had the opportunity to meet and train with him.

  • Dans groundbreaking book had sparring principles that easily rivaled other big names like Joe Lewis and Bruce Lee IMO. A pity that he didn't get the visibility he deserved. The book is a CLASSIC

  • SUPERDAN ANDERSON wrote THE definitive book on point soaring back in the day when he was a little thinner with a head of curly hair! LOL! apparently he's still got the right stuff!

  • Dan Anderson is one of the greatest martial artist I have ever met. In 1985 I was a student of Robert Edwards who introduced me to Dan. I have watched him as a teacher and some of the excellent students he produce, achieve much success. If Mr Edwards wasn't my teacher, Mr Anderson would have been.

  • @ironpalmlong Thank you. Robbie was one of the pacific Northwest greats AND a good friend of mine. You had a great teacher!

  • completely unrelated... I'm a yellow belt and i'm already learning brown belt sparing stances and other martial arts (we are getting more martial arts being built into our style) and way when i'm actually allowed to spar maybe i will try this so thank you =)

  • The first one to say he can beat Mr. A is the first one to lose.

As a former student, I can attest to the fact that he will jump in, score 5 points, eat half a sandwich, score 5 more points, finish the sandwich, and then jump out.......

all while you're still waiting for the first offensive move, not knowing you've already lost.

Mr. A is the most humble, easy going teacher in the world.

Always remember, if he can do it, anybody can do it.

  • East coast of canada.

  • I have your book "freestyle karate" and its one of my favorites. Very cool tactics and stratagies. I would love to have done a seminar with you ..........but I am very far away.

  • @l2a3sterling How far away are you?

  • This man is out for money.

  • I like this video. By the way, to the person who said there are no superior martial arts: There are some inferior martial arts, usually the ones invented by young people in their back yards. There is no substitute for good instruction .

  • Not true.. when I was 11 I began devolping my own style, which makes the blade simply that, just a blade for blocking the oppents blade, while a majority of the moves are grapple take downs and MMA. It's very affective and my prevouise teacher wanted me to teach him, and we've been working on it ever since. I'm sorry if I sound cocky, and that my spelling was a little bad, I apologize but the best style is the one your body is adapted to, in other words i think we all have a "soul" style? Idk..

  • An 11 year old developing his own style? Give me a break! I have taught many 11 year olds since the 1960's and have never seen one capable of developing a style of his own. You are living in a dream world and your reality is only yours.

  • Ahhh, another low life who just enjoys arguing over youtube... Well, when I was 11. I havn't said a damn thing about how old I am now, dumbass... So I suppose your many years of teachings didn't pay off if your to immature to respect another persons beliefs, and understandings. Damn fool, you may be teaching but it sounds like you need to be taught.

  • @Mantero11 Touchy aren't we? Were you over toilet trained as a child? You are just yoo full of yourself. Put a video of yourself on youtube! Let's see what you have!

  • @Mantero11

It doesn't matter how old you are now because you haven't matured beyond 11 based on your childish comments on youtube here. You may teach me by putting a video of yourself on here knucklehead!

  • Well... for someone who confuses not "there" for "their", but "waist" for "waste" and "mauy" for "muay"... its understandable.

As all great masters would say, excellence is not within the martial art, but the martial artist.

  • That said, yea most Mc-Dojos have terrible caucasian "senseis". This seems like another one of those.

  • what are you a english teacher well stick to spelling bees instead of martial arts cause if you're that focused on my spelling then obviously you"ll be focused on counting knuckles than blocking them...NERRD! SPELL DAT

  • okay... point proven...

  • ya okay because THAT was the whole point of karate, noob.

karate is about self defense, and i hate people like you who just flaunt it around, thinking you're 'scary' by saying you can break bones and attack people.

You're a disgrace to your sensei and anyone else who taught you and what your style was. I hope some day you try to pull that shit on someone and get locked away for the rest of your life.

  • f*ck you!!!! I was defending karate from this guy, and ur telling me im a disgrace?!! STFU!!!!!

  • Dude shut up...He wasn't saying it like that, try actually reading it before you reply.

  • You don't know anything. You are gay!

  • i can beat this guy in sparring. What are the odds this will work? everyone knows they have to step "back" if they want to switch legs, not "forward", into the attack...

  • "What are the odds?" Worked great for me for many years. "Everyone knows?" That's how you get caught by tactics.

  • I saw Prof. Anderson fight in the USKA Grand Nationals back in 1974. He seems to have lost little if any of his speed:) --

  • karate is all about attacking first. try tai chi or kung fu.

  • Not at all. This clip is about offensive timing but this clip is not all there is to karate.

    DA

  • your kidding right? the mantra of karate is "There is no first attack in karate"

  • they teach that to you in your first day as a karateka

  • well i guess it was the school i participated in i beacuse learned the vital and fatal spots and all that but not the proper strike and the formation of the fist to use and everyone was getting theyre ranks every 3 months and where i train now is testing once a year, what i said was rude and disrespectful towards karate so i take it back...but it did teach me how to fuck someones leg up in many ways

  • too bad you completely missed the point of martial arts, and know nothing of it.

  • Reinforcing that point is... Bad?

  • bitch ass girl he is my techer

  • hello this is Jake H. one of your former students. Thanks for the tip I might need it later

  • "What's in a name? That which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet." Dan Anderson coined a WORD not a STYLE. If anyone one man could be granted that title it would be bruce lee. but thats not fair either. practical teachers in their own little gym in the backyard have been growning, refining and expanding American Freestyle long before anyone here could have fathomed what this powerhouse style would become.

  • idk too much about this guy but he looks and sounds like he knows what hes doing, i would agree that he may be an under rated genius in sparring

  • prof Dan is amazing. When i read his book years ago he answered every question on sparring, psychology, footwork, timing, EVERYTHING! he is one of the TRUELY UNDER RATED Karate pioneers

  • American Freestyle is not owned by anyone. It has come to mean much more than the title of a book 25 years ago. It is becoming a true American art.Hybrid at its roots. If something works its included if it doesnt its discarded.

  • American Freestyle Karate was coined by Thomas Levak back in 1977 as the title of what I did. I am the first person to use this for a karate style back in 1977. I have formally used it for the last 30 years. In 1980 the title was copyrighted by Unique Publications.

    Yours,

    DA

  • i think Bruce Lee really started American Freestyle Karate, not personaly but whit his ideas. i dont see how u can copyright a name like American Freestyle Karate. there r AFK schools all over the place. Im a black belt in AFK and ive never heard of u till i saw this vid.

  • Thank you so much LateKnight!!!!! Thats exactly what I am trying to say. There are currently at least four people claiming to have started American Freestyle. Noone owns it! And, you are right Bruce Lee did more to start Hybrids/Freestyles than anyone.

  • If you thought the clip was good read his books or see him in person, Prof Dan is amazing

  • I liked the structure of this video tip: demonstration of the technique in the competition; follow up with step-by-step instruction, replay of the technique in competition.

    Sincerely,

    Catherine
