I heard Sergey Larin at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, in Evgeny Onegin and Smetana's Bartered Bride. He was an excellent singer with a sweet, dark voice. He was not a spinto, though. He was a lyric tenor.
I love his Chandos CDs of Russian art songs. They are worthy of being compared to recordings by Lemeshev or Vinogradov.
I was so sad to hear that Larin died, too. He was supposed to come to Baltimore last season to sing Alvaro in "Forza" opposite his ex-Turandot, Giovanna Casolla. He was replaced by Antonello Palombi, probably because of his illness. I thought Larin had a big enough voice for Calaf, and he'd be better off singing Otello or even some Wagner; alas, it will never be.
oh my gosh that last "vincero" was tremendous! im was so upset to hear about mr. larin's passing. the movie "the turandot project", which is a documentary on the coming about of this production, was what got me hooked on opera!! RIP.
My friend saw him 2 days ago in Bratislava and Sergei was fine, talking about plans and nobody, but NOBODY could imagine that he will be dead in a day.
Mr Larin had a beautifull, powerfull voice, anyway there are few tenors who can sing high b without screaming at the B and sustain the A enough as writen, Miguel Fleta, Bjoerling, Pavarotti young, Volpi,I feel that inside a dramatic rol this aria is more lyric, like e lucevan le stelle in Tosca. That is why with real dramatic voices are antimusical versions with not enough slancio.
At the score It seems Puccini didn't want a long B but a long A, Vincero hold at "CE"instead of RO broken the italian pronunciation.Puccini wrote long Viiin, short ce, longer Rooooooooo!.
He wrote Vinceró, 3 times the same way, not the last Vincéeeeeeeeeeero.
Is funny that tenors with technique problems with high notes always recall their will to sing as in the score was writed... La Donna e Mobile and Nessun Dorma are not the same without their high B's.
Aguacum, if the important thing is the high note,Nessun Dorma is in D mayor the instead of finish in A as puccini wrote why not go to high D at the end?? Alfredo Kraus may be happy with that end!!
how paul potts makes it into these conversations is unbelievabe... i thought he sang from the heart on BGT, but it ends there. and did someone say "way better than pavarotti".....r u kiddin me.... larin is good...but please.... and just my personal opinion, they need to hold the last note....it's much more dramatic....i hate when they cut it off..
There is one thing that dissupointed me in his performence of the opera: He didn't go to the high "do" at the end of the riddle scene, when he sings "Ti voglio ardente d'amor!"...
This is very good version of the aria. However, it is just one aria in one of the hardest roles in opera. Larin, with his metalic top, definitally sounds like he has the chops to take on Calaf. First off, Pavarotti did sing a beautiful "Nessun Dorma" but he never could do justice to the actually role. Paul Potts isn't even worth the time of day so blah. Another thing that should be said is Larin a russian tenor, therefor, the italianate style seems to be an odd fit.
I have seen many renditions of this opera and I must say the staging of this production was superb!! The Forbidden City was the perfect backdrop. However, no one could ever live up to Luciano Pavarotti, who ultimately owned Nessun Dorma, and rightfully so. Unfortunately,it will always seem that every other tenor is under par.Given some are better than others, I suppose it's then a matter of personal preference. Great Vid
I know what a full voiced tenor sounds like. This is terrible. I hate this kind of voice. Very un-Italian. Corelli, DelMonaco, Giacomini, those are full voiced tenors.
Finally a tenor who *attacks* the high B instead of throwing another note in there and sneaking up to it a la Pavarotti. Haven't heard that since Bjorling. Bravo!
He is really excellent! I'm lucky because I can see him sometimes in our theatre... Currently he sings Canio, Turiddu, Calaf and Don José in Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava and his interpretation of this characters is always a big experience for me... I can upload the aria of Prince (Rusalka)
The best tenor ever was Pavarotti, the second best was Peter Dvorsky. Dvorsky was even the best Rodolfo (La Boheme) ever.

Very sad that Larin daed today. Another great musician who left us.
With all the criticysm about his voice and intarpritation (And I have a lot), he was a very good tenor and musician!
Listen to all the performence of this Turandot with him, and you will discover a really wonderfull artist in all the sceens, duets and ansambels.
Thank you Sergey Larin. I will always remember you and listen to youre works!
