@Lenangreal Have you heard FARINELLI to write this nonsense on YT?Only FARINELLI could be FARINELLI!And to sound like castrati one can only be a CASTRATO!PJ isn't even a countertenor which is the closest substitute to castrati now, but a commercial pop falsettist who sings on only HIGH notes producing only sweet, sugary sounds to AMUSE people without expressing all range of HUMAN emotions! If you think that castrati sounded like sexless "angels" you are wrong! @serenaluce - the Salzburg festival must be hard up by your standards since Jaruossky is singing there with Scholl, Bartoli, and von Otter in "Guilio Cesare." Have you informed them of your concerns? And if not, why not?
@evansquilt And why should I inform anybody of MY concerns? Why don't YOU inform others? Come on, Bartoli is the most POPULAR, overpromoted supposedly opera singer of our time who began as a very promising singer but degradated as a singing machine who only shocks people with ugly visceral pushed from inside low notes pretending that she is a man and "the castratiest castrato" ever and some people only believe promotion that ugly is beautiful. If Philippe was born in the era of the castrati, and if he had followed lessons from master Porpora, he would have been a singer Kings and Queens loved to have him performed in their palaces. He would have sung with Carestini and Farinelli and the lucky ones who sat in the great oprahouses would have had tears in their eyes. But, to hear Philippe performe for us totay, makes me feel like a King. Sing Philippe, Sing !!! and light up the world with your golden voice.
@amorroma1244 But Porpora wasnt interested in falsettists. In baroque times falsettists were not aranged in the opera, only in oratorios. Haendel prefered female voices then contretenors, they lost rivalry not only with castrati, but with both female voices and older "boy sopranos" (practically natural young castratos as at this time puberty was much more subsequent). And now voice of Ewa Godlewska is much more convincing, i think Wiliam Savage (as boy soprano) too.
@2010wieliczka Nicola Porpora was one of the best teachers of castrati in his time.In the year 1708 he started his own "conservatorio" in Napels. He also was a composer. His biggest puple, Farinelli, only 16 years of age, sung the female voices of "Gli Orti Esperidi", his debute in 1721. Also in Porpora's "Eumene" it was Farinelli that took on the female voice. Why? Well, it was not common for women to sing in Italy. The church didn't allow it. In England and Germany it was allowed, but just.
@amorroma1244 Wiliam Savage was at the same age when he sung for Haendel in some opera performances. Next 16 yo example we can compare on youtube- for example Clint van Der Linde (15,5) or Alois Muhlbacher (15, 16). Carlo was a genius and had the best teacher, maybe Wiliam too and today "big" boy sopranos are totally selected (only about 3 % boys at this age are before vocal collaps) but comparison is very interesting (Alois and Wiliam as Oberto).
@amorroma1244 "If Phillipe was born in the era of the castrati...." Luckily for him he still has his conkers and the cruel practice of mutilating vulnerable male singers has been prohibited.

I've been waiting for someone to phrase this like they mean it. You're phrasing makes me cry. I love how you carried the measure through without a breath. I wish you would have closed your eyes and went further in freedom. The hell with the audience. I love how you used it all....volume, attack, and timing. I yearn for someone to use extreme volume on this song. Like a crying patriot. Very extreme.
@HegemonWiggi: Of course he´s a countertenor, just with an extremely well trained head voice.
@ tuffy: Yes, sad what goes on in some people´s heads and souls, or what they consider to be their soul. But they are few. Most appreciate art, beauty and goodness.
@HegemonWiggi He's not a castrato. When he was young he decided to develop his voice as a countertenor when he liestened to Fabrice di Falco. He said he was more confortable ans had more pleasure singing like this.
It is difficult to judge the size of the voice on YouTube but I have heard him sing twice in very large concert halls and he filled the auditoriums with ease. He has phenomenal breath control and can sing for ever. At one concert after a long and difficult recital he sang six encores!
He is certainly a great artist but also a phenomenon who like all special opera singers does not appear to recognise the limits which constrain most singers .
I thought that I saw Philippe at Neiman Marcus in Boston this summer 2011. I wonder if he performed with the Boston Symphony? The VOICE is BREATHTAKING!
My God!!!I just read to the end of the comments here. I cannot believe the trash hurled around. It is sad if not maddening. @lty2k84 excuse me, each voice has an unique amprent, sounds different from any other voice: that's why a soprano's man voice will sound different from a soprano's woman voice. in fact, in medieval times, girls weren't allowed to sing or to play pieces of theatre (i'm talking about 13th to 16th centuries) that's why voices are of masculine genre (sopran, alto, tenor, bass), only boys and men were allowed to sing. this doesn't mean that all men who sing high are gay...
