Maybe David represents all those who are living under the grace of God, where person could be guilty for every possible sin but is forgiven and made clear thru blood of Jesus Christ. That is anticipation of the grace period. And Saul symbolizes living under the law wich cannot save anyone, and where transgression of one rule make one guilty for all, and nobody can be saved through law.
The only reason why David could say he was clean - mark - "in God's eyesight"!!! was because he had been forgiven. David had understood what the righteousness of God is - the vicarious righteousness of Jesus - that - when we believe - His righteousness is applied to us - undeserved.
We should not glorify the lives of saved sinners. Instead, let us look to the faithfulness of God. We are saved by grace through faith. David being a man after God's heart is proof of that - and a strong proof too.

In my opinion, the death of David's first born with Bathsheba was a very painful punishment for them both.
