  • yeah? How come we've heard so much of Dave Weckl...Chick Corea selected him,and Corea selects only great people who can match his style of playing

  • Seems to me to be a contradiction and a waste of motion. He says that when you start to play faster the exagerated motion smooths and levels out, what then is the purpose. When you play faster the idea is to be more effeciant and have the least amount of wasted effort. Joe Morello for one showed that with wrist and finger control you could play fast with more control and with more effeciancy.

  • Never knew that osama would be teaching me the moeller technique

  • @xbulldog12x osama is or was the terrorist..

  • @pharcydebug i was being sarcastic -__-

  • cut out this shit.. bring on the band and stop wankin..

  • see great groove: /watch?v=sTMjT6YsyXk

  • what practice pad is he using?

  • @Coixxman looks like its a realfeel

  • @Coixxman old school hq realfeel

  • Haha guys hes Dave Weckl I think he knows what he's doing.

  • i'm a drummer and i think it's a shame that there's SO much shit talking on here. I don't believe that you can know it all and that those that claim to, wish they did. I also believe that you can learn something from everybody no matter the skill level. 'Traditional' vs. 'Matched grip'.... it's personal taste. I use both. They each have their own application. Remember, drumming *IS* an art form, not a competition.

"serve the song, not your ego" --- Neil Peart

    .

  • looks like Weckl gets it wrong... he is my favourite drummer alive today but... when ending each stroke as taught by Jim Chapin, the sticks must end pointing up, not pointing down.

  • Is there any different between moeller & double stroke rolls??

  • @zeronvt yes... check out jim chapin's double stroke roll explanation (second note louder thing)

  • its like a heel toe technique but for your hands!

  • @JonnyAppleCor That´s exactly where the Heel-Toe Technique for the Feet came from ;-)

  • I would like to play drums on the millennium falcon

  • I would like to play drums on the moon

  • Notice how after each stroke his stick finishes down. In correct moeller technique the sticks always end in the up position. It is harder to learn, however as much as I LOVE Weckl, this is wrong. The late Great Jim Chapin teaches this technique right.

  • 2:27 ".....and ,eventually" !!!

  • 0:01 what the fuckk!

  • I know this is a noob question but is the moeller technique something that you just practice on the pad do develop your hands or can you apply it in the real kit? If yes, can you hit me up with some vids or suggestions. Thanks :)

  • i never thought that obama is white 0.0

  • @MrThekaram55 he is white...

  • Interesting. How does this compare, say, to a gravity blast?

  • gosh i watch this like every day! this is so much harder than it looks

  • TOO FUCKING HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • this has really helped me so much, i couldnt really understand what jojo mayer was saying, he was more interested in showing that he could play it, dave is an excellent teacher

  • blasting technique

  • @doctorfeelgood100 You're full of shit, man! I've been playing professionally since 1964 and I can tell ya most drummers DIDNOT play in marching bands. I have never played in a marching band. This is just the proper way to play. I NEVER saw anyone play matched grip untill I saw Ringo Star on Ed Sullivan show. He was the first player to use matched grip. (just a taste of drummin history for all you young cats out there)

  • Comment removed

  • @OlTownDrumClinic Obviously, he was not the first drummer to use matched grip. I just said that he was the first drummer that I saw using matched grip.

P.S. I didn't know that Purdie even existed back then.He was only 24 and his first album, Soul Drums, wasn't released untill years later.

  • @drumsticknow I was also under the impression that Ringo was the first cat to use matched....

  • @drumsticknow Ringo was the first person to use trad grip?! What about Buddy Rich, Jim Chapin, Billy Cobham and all the of the hundreds of jazz drummers using trad grip twenty years before Ringo?

  • @dandarkwing Hey, "dorkwing". I said MATCHED grip not traditional grip. Get a GRIP, man !!! (and lay off the weed. It's destoying your brain)

  • @drumsticknow If you can play drums like Dave Weckl or better then you can correct it. If not then shut up and listen to the teacher

  • @nahuelitsn I AM A TEACHER! OVER 40 YEARS NOW. BESIDES, I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKIN ABOUT.

  • @drumsticknow 'The proper way to play???'Says who?If it wasnt for marching bands,-doesnt matter if YOU have never been to a marching band- you would play matched too.But let's suppose traditional is the' proper way to play',why dont you use it in BOTH hands??For your info,Dom Famularo, student of Jim Chapin ,has played trad for most of his life, only to realize that its bad for your hands,so now he is switching to matched....

  • @drumsticknow lots of drummers did- steve gadd, for instance. and keith carlock. two pros off the top of my head. there'll be plenty more.

  • @drumsticknow What about Buddy Rich?

  • @drumsticknow He may be full of shit but damm he can play

  • ich glaub da wo er schneller spielen will hört das video auf^^

  • mmm....is a better explanation of Jim Chapin

  • Depends on the player. Once you gain a sense of how moeller motion feels, Many people will find it is quickly aplicable to the kit. Whereas, I find that freehand technuique is a lot harder to employ with sufficiant tightness and power. Both different technuiqes for different things.

  • fuck this dude know how to play drums...

  • This is just like Gravity Blast .-.

  • @FeehDeedo No it's not. the freehand technuique relies on using the rim as a fulcrum, moeller relies on rebound alone

  • @nailedurmum01 wich makes it harder, right ?

  • @FeehDeedo no it isnt? gravity blast uses the rim as a fulcrom

  • @SgtCrazy128 I know that, but I said they're similar

  • @FeehDeedo but there not similar...at all lol

  • doesn't it sounds like a car signalling

  • i prefer Tommy Igoe's Great Hands for a Lifetime.

  • Actually no, he does teach it the right way.. except a different, it's something like, some people believe it's all about the rebound, whereas dave weckl believes u control every stroke, somethin like that.

  • sound exactly like Obama!

  • @DNWGretsch182 Wow, I didn't know that Obama sound like the Moeller Technique

  • Jim Chapin is also a legendary drum teacher. If you have never gotten lessons from him teaching you the moeller, don't you think saying he sucks at teaching the technique is a bit off?

Don't forget, Jim Chapin's moeller was taught to him by the inventer of the moeller technique himself, Sanford Moeller.

  • I love that sound of the air being sliced by his drum sticks.

  • Jim chaping got pwned

  • @Flaitesexy wat the fuck r u talkin about jim chapin taught this guy the moeller technique

  • @murdok620 yea but jim chapin never talks about rebound , the most important thing

  • @Flaitesexy Actually, He says somewhere that it's not all about the rebound. It's vital but not everything.

  • Just watching the first two seconds of this video, I was like, 'Fffffffffffffffffffuck.'

  • This guy did a MUCH better job explaining this than that old guy Jim Chapin. That guy is a horrible teacher. Weckl is a fucking god of drums.

  • @VitalSigns1 You have any idea who Jim Chapin is?....Have some respect!

Everything Weckl says like other greats...got it from Guys like Jim.

    You're a jackass!

  • @UnluckilyEnlightened I don't care who who is. He sucks at teaching this technique. Weckl is a God.

  • @VitalSigns1 They're both Gods!

  • @UnluckilyEnlightened

Unlucky I'd add... if that were the case, then there would be nothing new under the sun. Even an older concept... it's the 'originality' or 'uniqueness' of someone new, that brings something different to it.

  • Dave Weckl would be a BAD ASS metal drummer.

  • He demonstrates so well here - Weckl is a superb educator as well as a top performer.

  • anyone else think he looks like john stewart?

  • He sounds like Barack obama at the beginning hahaha

  • Weckl has amazing technique. Jojo Mayer's dvd also explains Moeller very well. If you want to learn from the Master though, check out Jim Chapin.

  • what control awesome

  • When he learns proper left hand traditional grip, I'll listen to what he has to say. I've actually attended one of his clinics and in person he is a huge bag-o-douche. I'm not really interested in arguing the point either.

  • @johnnyklocko Well interested or not, you should be able

to defend this if anyone inquires. And so, I'll inquire:

Why is he a douchebag? I've never met him, I like his

drumming but I won't defend him to much here. I'd just

like to know why you think that.

  • @johnnyklocko Yeah, that was my impression of the man, as well.

  • great drummer great technique

  • This is in my opinion, one of the best demonstrations of this technique I have seen.

I still can't do it though, but this tells me how and shows me why i should learn to.

    That's all....

  • @teetomthomas its straight to the point and clear! He also throws in the history and background and gives examples of the technique. All in 3 minutes!

  • He teaches this wrong, I'm not trying to sound all big and better than everyone because I'm not but I was taught this technique by Andy Leask, he is one of only about 3 people in the world who were taught the technique by the man who created it.

  • @oODallyOo how do you do this technique the right way?? teach me please

  • @oODallyOo I have seen SO many people show this and it seems extremely correct

  • @oODallyOo I guess the way i look at it... It's his take on it...the way he plays it and teaches it is the way he has developed it himself and feels comfortable. JoJo Mayer said " If you throw a trash can out of a window and it makes the sound you want on impact, you have perfect technique" Maybe it's the same concept with dave?

  • @Drummingwizkid your probably right there, when i said he teaches it wrong, i dont claim to know the right way I am only saying what i was told by Andy Leask because Andy was taught the technique by the man who invented it, but you are probably right with the JoJo Mayer thing.

  • @oODallyOo Yeah I get where you're coming from. I have been taught 3 different ways by my professors. I guess it all comes down to preference really. Thanks for the reply.

  • @oODallyOo "He teaches this wrong"

No, he just teaches this differently. Perhaps it is not as effective for some as it is for others.

  • god what i would do to get lessons from him for the rest of my life lol

  • @MrScientition yea thats what i was thinking a gravity blast wihtout using the rim

  • ..forearms dude. nice.

  • omg this guy says way too much info.

  • I am a beginner and I am drooling...

  • Im pretty sure that on the down stoke the stick should come back up almost vertical to get more power on the upstroke

  • @drummer9042 I know, Dave Weckl is such an amateur eh.

  • SOOO SMOOOOOTHH..

  • if you liked this video I suggest you to buy the jojo mayer's dvd, he goes more in details ;)

  • It's not a myth he just showed it to u!!! When it actually was called and identified as moeller could be in question maybe but what he showed was moeller!!!!!!

  • his the bestt !!!

  • Some people think Moeller technique is a myth. -that is, there never was any sort of "technique" but just the visual sticking motion.

  • Is DW from south by any chance? He kinda has a slightly twangy accent?

  • @dwilmer7 Saint Charles, Missouri

  • uff dave es el maestro gracias a quien subio este video nos ayuda a todos los musicos empiricos.

  • uff dave es el maestro gracias a quien subio este video nos ayuda a todos los musicos empiricos.

  • so its kind of like a double stroke?

  • @2ra0bid9 Not exactly. It is a way of transmitting energy to the stick so that it keeps bouncing. You only move your arm/wrist every 2 bounces (triplets) or after every bounce (pumping). You can use this technique to get more power/speed with less effort.

  • bwahahahaaa :D no this is Real. This man is a Very Great Drummer.

  • show my arse, there are definate reasons for it, but show aint one of them

  • @JamesonBlosil

Exactly what doctorfeelgood100 said. The marching snare was originally tilted, so it was easier to play that way. I prefer it.

    Obviously, you're not a drummer.

  • Comment removed

  • @aslyter45 I have been taught by someone who marched professionally. He was one of the best tenor players in the winter drum line (he was a blue knight) a few years ago. And my Dad is one of Dave Weckls close friends. So I think I have a pretty good idea. I have been drumming for over 11 years. So I don't know I think I have a good idea about technique. And if you look at some drum corps they sometimes play matched instead of traditional. But you can think what you want. You'r not a drummer.

  • @JamesonBlosil

Actually. I've been playing for about 14 years. Yeah, some drum corps play matched. That doesn't mean that traditional grip is just for show. You're just full of shit.

  • Some drummers prefer traditional grip because it gives a better separation between the left and the right hand, easier to cordinate between left and right. But that is totally subjective and I think it is just what you are used to. But I have to say that playing traditionally gives you better control over the stick but less power. If I play soft jazz I like playing traditionally but when I play hard funk or rock or hip hop I need to play matched because lack the power when playing traditionally.

  • It has to do with the placement and type of drums. Not every technique fits every drum kit. You don't want to treat your PATTERNS differently depending on the hand. Stick holding technique is somewhat irrelevant.

  • stick holding technique is NOT irrelevant. How can you get proper speed, control or nuance if you don't hold them right.??

  • sorry man, but you're full of it. it comes from comfortable playing in a military situation, you can't go into battle with yer elbow in the air, as it would be if you played a side drum with a matched grip, it also makes the stick points come together at 90 degrees.

  • have a cry

  • Quit bitching.

  • does he do private lessons?!?!??! lol jk

  • Yeah say for $300 an hour?

  • @deftdrummer ... he is actually not that expensive . From what I understand he teaches a lot in L.A. when he is in town . Like 100 an hour ..not bad really

  • Quick question!!! Did Weckl studied a major on music?

  • yeah, it is called the chick corea band....both electric and acoustic

  • free of charge? is the tape or dvd this was taken from, free? if it is, please tell me where i can get myself one.

  • this dude really loves drums. You can tell from this video.

  • @MrSatanochio NO shit he's a legend

  • Comment removed

  • @julianisdope the man is a legend

  • @julianisdope actually its on his dvd which isnt cheap. its just on youtube for free. fucking retard

  • @jjdrummer108 still free retard

  • @julianisdope ya hes not choosing to give it away u fucking faggot. someone put it up here. if it were reported it would be taken down

  • @jjdrummer108 why are you so salty ?just enjoy the god dam video and be happy its here faggot.

  • @julianisdope You really need a comma between "free" and "retard" to not sound like a retard.

  • @julianisdope Pretty sure he got payed by the makers of this video. And I'm also pretty sure they did not intend for it to end up on youtube.

  • @julianisdope the description says this is off his drum tape...which I think he intended you to pay for :P

  • @julianisdope I'm pretty sure this will have been ripped from one of his DVD's

  • @julianisdope Lol it probably was from one of his dvds. Its only free coz its on youtube.

  • He's the best DRUMMER IN THE WHOLE WORLD! HANDS DOWN!

  • Gavin Harrison would like to have a chat with you...

  • sure would..

    thats a sonor drumming beast

  • hehehe hes one of of them buddy...just one.... hehehe

  • Perhaps, Jojo certainly has better chops hand and foot. But Weckl might be better at improvisation and composition, and style. I cant say for sure which is better.

  • they both share different styles of music, but i believe everyone can agree they are both pretty amazing :O

  • @luisgarayreyna1 no he's not, and far from it. amazing technique is the enemy of music. any skilled teacher will tell you that. also like any good jazz man.

try steve gadd even just once and see how brilliant he is. he has a more powerful strike but yet sounds so much lighter and pleasant. there is no secret here!

  • Ok, I'm an idiot. Can someone post the Jojo Mayer link here, please? I'm not sure which one you're all referring to.

  • verry good!!!

  • search up jojo mayer moeller technique, he explains it very well

  • Why don't I have jacked forearms like that?!?!

  • He DOES explain it perfectly. Very useful/

  • this is good for blastbeats

  • I must agree that I suck at this technique and had a bass player ask me to use it as I looked tired. I told him that it wasn't something you just start doing in a live situation but something that takes alot of practice to perfect!!

  • HMM, wrong you are. Perhaps you just aren't very bright?

  • no, thats not it. you'll see what I mean if you compare the two videos. Its not that hard to see that jojo mayer explains the technique alot better.

  • Jojo Mayer Explains it very well

LOOK FOR IT, my drum teacher would recommend it.

  • Hm. Have you even seen Jojo Mayer play?

  • That's really impressive Oo

  • Great teacher. Nice Job!
