Seems to me to be a contradiction and a waste of motion. He says that when you start to play faster the exagerated motion smooths and levels out, what then is the purpose. When you play faster the idea is to be more effeciant and have the least amount of wasted effort. Joe Morello for one showed that with wrist and finger control you could play fast with more control and with more effeciancy.
i'm a drummer and i think it's a shame that there's SO much shit talking on here. I don't believe that you can know it all and that those that claim to, wish they did. I also believe that you can learn something from everybody no matter the skill level. 'Traditional' vs. 'Matched grip'.... it's personal taste. I use both. They each have their own application. Remember, drumming *IS* an art form, not a competition.
looks like Weckl gets it wrong... he is my favourite drummer alive today but... when ending each stroke as taught by Jim Chapin, the sticks must end pointing up, not pointing down.
Notice how after each stroke his stick finishes down. In correct moeller technique the sticks always end in the up position. It is harder to learn, however as much as I LOVE Weckl, this is wrong. The late Great Jim Chapin teaches this technique right.
I know this is a noob question but is the moeller technique something that you just practice on the pad do develop your hands or can you apply it in the real kit? If yes, can you hit me up with some vids or suggestions. Thanks :)
Wondering why you're not improving? You may be dealing with RSI which is impeding your hands from developing the strength required for really good technique. Click on my channel to check out my video about RSI and drumming.
this has really helped me so much, i couldnt really understand what jojo mayer was saying, he was more interested in showing that he could play it, dave is an excellent teacher
@doctorfeelgood100 You're full of shit, man! I've been playing professionally since 1964 and I can tell ya most drummers DIDNOT play in marching bands. I have never played in a marching band. This is just the proper way to play. I NEVER saw anyone play matched grip untill I saw Ringo Star on Ed Sullivan show. He was the first player to use matched grip. (just a taste of drummin history for all you young cats out there)
@OlTownDrumClinic Obviously, he was not the first drummer to use matched grip. I just said that he was the first drummer that I saw using matched grip.
P.S. I didn't know that Purdie even existed back then.He was only 24 and his first album, Soul Drums, wasn't released untill years later.
@drumsticknow Ringo was the first person to use trad grip?! What about Buddy Rich, Jim Chapin, Billy Cobham and all the of the hundreds of jazz drummers using trad grip twenty years before Ringo?
@drumsticknow 'The proper way to play???'Says who?If it wasnt for marching bands,-doesnt matter if YOU have never been to a marching band- you would play matched too.But let's suppose traditional is the' proper way to play',why dont you use it in BOTH hands??For your info,Dom Famularo, student of Jim Chapin ,has played trad for most of his life, only to realize that its bad for your hands,so now he is switching to matched....
Depends on the player. Once you gain a sense of how moeller motion feels, Many people will find it is quickly aplicable to the kit. Whereas, I find that freehand technuique is a lot harder to employ with sufficiant tightness and power. Both different technuiqes for different things.
I use the Moeller Technique on my wife when the bitch starts acting like a little typical worthless manly man american whore...shit is effective, bitch starts acting like a lady again instead of a man. It's a little more difficult to master with a belt but still doable....try it when your bitch starts her crap.
Actually no, he does teach it the right way.. except a different, it's something like, some people believe it's all about the rebound, whereas dave weckl believes u control every stroke, somethin like that.
Jim Chapin is also a legendary drum teacher. If you have never gotten lessons from him teaching you the moeller, don't you think saying he sucks at teaching the technique is a bit off?
Don't forget, Jim Chapin's moeller was taught to him by the inventer of the moeller technique himself, Sanford Moeller.
Unlucky I'd add... if that were the case, then there would be nothing new under the sun. Even an older concept... it's the 'originality' or 'uniqueness' of someone new, that brings something different to it.
When he learns proper left hand traditional grip, I'll listen to what he has to say. I've actually attended one of his clinics and in person he is a huge bag-o-douche. I'm not really interested in arguing the point either.
@teetomthomas its straight to the point and clear! He also throws in the history and background and gives examples of the technique. All in 3 minutes!
He teaches this wrong, I'm not trying to sound all big and better than everyone because I'm not but I was taught this technique by Andy Leask, he is one of only about 3 people in the world who were taught the technique by the man who created it.
@oODallyOo I guess the way i look at it... It's his take on it...the way he plays it and teaches it is the way he has developed it himself and feels comfortable. JoJo Mayer said " If you throw a trash can out of a window and it makes the sound you want on impact, you have perfect technique" Maybe it's the same concept with dave?
@Drummingwizkid your probably right there, when i said he teaches it wrong, i dont claim to know the right way I am only saying what i was told by Andy Leask because Andy was taught the technique by the man who invented it, but you are probably right with the JoJo Mayer thing.
@oODallyOo Yeah I get where you're coming from. I have been taught 3 different ways by my professors. I guess it all comes down to preference really. Thanks for the reply.
It's not a myth he just showed it to u!!! When it actually was called and identified as moeller could be in question maybe but what he showed was moeller!!!!!!
@2ra0bid9 Not exactly. It is a way of transmitting energy to the stick so that it keeps bouncing. You only move your arm/wrist every 2 bounces (triplets) or after every bounce (pumping). You can use this technique to get more power/speed with less effort.

As far as stick holding goes, I don't see why someone would hold the stick differently in each hand. Why treat one hand differently than the other?.....I suppose it plays a role with the tone of a stroke, be it on a cymbal or drum head.
@aslyter45 I have been taught by someone who marched professionally. He was one of the best tenor players in the winter drum line (he was a blue knight) a few years ago. And my Dad is one of Dave Weckls close friends. So I think I have a pretty good idea. I have been drumming for over 11 years. So I don't know I think I have a good idea about technique. Actually. I've been playing for about 14 years. Yeah, some drum corps play matched. That doesn't mean that traditional grip is just for show. You're just full of shit.

@deftdrummer ... he is actually not that expensive . From what I understand he teaches a lot in L.A. when he is in town . Like 100 an hour ..not bad really
Perhaps, Jojo certainly has better chops hand and foot. But Weckl might be better at improvisation and composition, and style. I cant say for sure which is better.
@luisgarayreyna1 no he's not, and far from it. amazing technique is the enemy of music. any skilled teacher will tell you that. also like any good jazz man.
try steve gadd even just once and see how brilliant he is. he has a more powerful strike but yet sounds so much lighter and pleasant. there is no secret here!
I must agree that I suck at this technique and had a bass player ask me to use it as I looked tired. I told him that it wasn't something you just start doing in a live situation but something that takes alot of practice to perfect!!
yeah? How come we've heard so much of Dave Weckl...Chick Corea selected him,and Corea selects only great people who can match his style of playing

Perhaps, Jojo certainly has better chops hand and foot. But Weckl might be better at improvisation and composition, and style. I cant say for sure which is better.

they both share different styles of music, but i believe everyone can agree they are both pretty amazing :O

Ok, I'm an idiot. Can someone post the Jojo Mayer link here, please? I'm not sure which one you're all referring to.

I must agree that I suck at this technique and had a bass player ask me to use it as I looked tired. I told him that it wasn't something you just start doing in a live situation but something that takes alot of practice to perfect!!

he doesn't explain things very well. people would be better off watching jojo mayer explain it. He's alot better at it as well.

HMM, wrong you are. Perhaps you just aren't very bright?
arthurkitchen 2 years ago 2
no, thats not it. you'll see what I mean if you compare the two videos. Its not that hard to see that jojo mayer explains the technique alot better.
