nice collection of kois though maybe giving away or selling the chagois, some orange kohakus, some of those sankes will sparkle up the pond more with your koi collection. and it will let your other kois have more space to grow to its maxist size.
very nice,a different set up to what we would use here in the uk for a koi pond,,but seams to be working well for you,,feel free to have a look at my video's of my pond....
Have you had this pond long? Proper koi ponds normally need bottom drains. Also, rocks and gravel at the bottom drain are not good. When you clean it out, you will realise that it is a cesspool and you wouldn't want your koi to live in that. Koi will not thrive in a pond without bottom drains. They may survive, but even then not for too long.
I have had it this way for 7 years and have not had any problems with my koi. Japanese mud ponds don't have bottom drains either. The gravel gives the koi a natural place to forage and the plants a place to root. I have koi in the upper part of the pond that I never feed. The fry in the upper pool grew 3 times faster than the fry in the lower pool. It is the muck that is under the surface of the gravel that hosts organisms that the koi will eat. It also hosts anaerobic denitrifying bacteria.
Thanks! Yes I do use gravel on the bottom and no I do not have a bottom drain. My filtration is totally bilogical with gravel and plants. I checked your videos and I must say you do have some nice koi!
that is a fantastic pond and you have some beautiful fish. well done!!! now you've run out of room how about coming and digging our pond out no point you getting bored!!! lol your video has definately made me think about redesigning our pond plans :-)
Thanks! I wish I had the time and money to do nothing but koi ponds. The main reasons I had in enlarging the pond was to grow bigger koi and try a new type to skimmer which I call a dry skimmer. Now that the leaves have started falling I am pleased with the benefits. Now I can clean the leaves once a week instead of once a day.
It is very relaxing. I love to set at the edge of my koi pond and watch the sun come up in the morning. My koi have come to recognize my foot steps and when I cross the bridge they race me to the spot where I set and feed them.
I spent more in sweat than anything else. It was all dug out by hand. My wife says it is a money pit since I keep making it bigger. I think I have run out of room to make it any bigger now.
cool pond and cool koi's but some of your Koi's are UGLY, why don't you sell or give away your UGLY koi :P
