@EvoProd There's a DOSBox version out for the system but don't expect stellar performances. Old CGA/EGA games work best. For Linux ports it usually helps to seek around or do your own port.
@Matrixman. The price is $330. Very few are available still from the first batch. It's way more expensive than a Wiz or an A320.
When I made the video a lot of the emulators were just out. Many of them have been replaced by full speed working versions. C64 emulation dramatically improved with new versions of Frodo & Vice. GB emulation is smooth as silk now. Genesis full frame PAL/NTSC as is Snes. Nes still is a little jerky but I'm sure another update will fix that.
The Wiz has one draw-back, the diagonal framesync line that pops-up on some older software. Of course Gamepark put the screen rotated in the Wiz - they always do something stupid like that - so that software ported from devices with a well implemented framebuffer needs to be altered. Simple rotating routines will cause diagonal refresh lines - unless you do a proper vsync which is actually more a diagonal sync :P
I'm very fond of my Wiz. The Amiga emulation is spot-on, and once you set up ini files for all the emulators / flash games, you don't need to go through Launcher at all. All my emus show up as icons in the SD menu and (the ones in NAND) in the Built In Games menu.
My ONLY complaints:
1. Boots up a little slower than I'd like.
2. My big thumbs get cramped after playing for an hour. They're too close to my palm!
3. I wish someone would make a system with L/R buttons on the BACK, not the top!
Amiga emulation is really good, especially the Amiga 500 games run great. It is a bit of a fiddle to switch from mouse, keyboard to joystick mode but all in all an excellent interface. I actually have that same emulator running on the Dreamcast console.
If you set up the approproate INI files including nice icons you can indeed use the built in Games menu without any problems. It's quite fast and easier.
Boot-up is a pain. But any Linux device will have some sort of boot time.
I've got big hands and I have the same problems. So I do tend to take more breaks in between.
I am not sure L/R buttons on the back will work, I imagined them there and 'emulated' pressing them. You will automatically put countrer pressure to the case with the fingers on the front and they are all touching buttons so that probably won't work.
I will yet have to convince myself that the Pandora will actually be good for gaming. It does have the parts but I tend to be rather specific about those kinds of things and I just hope they get it right.
Ja das werde Ich machen. Aber mine itention is to just use it as was intended. For me this isn't an experiment. I think I have a pretty good idea what kind of device I am getting. The only uncertainty is how good the gaming controls will be....
ill make it easy for you, the wiz is out and definitly will come to your house if you pay for it. the pandora will be perpetually delayed until 2012, when all the people who pre ordered them will explode with anger and destroy the planet.
Well you can easily get one from h t t p : / / w w w . g b a x . c o m / (remove the spaces)
Nice and bright screen (OLED). Solid performance and excellent battery life. The battery is built in but is exchangeable with a spare if you order that one. I have been running this without any drop in battery life. Lasting for 10 hours sometimes depending on what you do with the device.
I also pre Ordered a Pandora and I am also looking forward to that machine too. That machine will be pure magic. We have been waiting for more than a year almost.... :P
I like it a lot, my friend and little brother both got a dingoo so I was able to compare it with the wiz, and I wouldn't change my mind, I like my Amiga emulation far too much :D and I like the wiz style much more.
Well indeed a Dingoo a320 is another great little device that actually offers a lot of the same things the Wiz does.
The thing is that you do need to modify the Dingoo in order to run all the homebrew software out there. You need to get a third party Linux up and running - dual booting it in fact so that homebrew software runs.
A great alternative. The Wiz does have a 3D graphics accelerator that the Dingoo A320 does not have. But for now not a single Wiz app is using the 3D accelerator.
As I am not a native speaker of the English language I figure 'Dope' is slang for 'nice'. Than I would have to agree that the Wiz is a very nice handheld worth getting! I haven't tested any games under Dosbox yet. It is quite a bit different than the version on the original gp2x.
As the cpu on the Wiz is quite a bit faster than the cpu on the original gp2x so I expect the performance to be better. Have yet to try it out though. Perhaps I'll make a video when I do.
The previous gp2x and the gp2x Wiz are different machines with a different make-up. The gp2x features two cpus whereas the Wiz only features one cpu and a specialized gpu.
The Linux OS running on both machines is different as well. It is using different libraries (like Windows dll's) and it means that even though the extensions of the executables it the same Wiz executables won't run on the standard gp2x and vice versa.
Programs need to be recompiled and sometimes redesigned.
Axiom sorry I accidently removed your question about emulators on the Wiz. You stated that on the DS a lot of emulators have a GBA compatible mode. The gp2x and the Wiz are not binary compatible so the emulators written for the Wiz won't function on the gp2x nor vice versa.
The reply and the delete on the comments are too close togother. Again, sorry for removing your response. :-(
You say that emulators won't work but will .gpe files work? I'm hesitant to buy one because I don't know if the program Little GP Tracker will work on the Wiz. Do you think you could try it out and see if it runs?
I am not sure the GBA emulator for the gp2x Wiz supports gb games - the classic Lemonboy emulator lags behind in quality when you compare the performance of the other emulators on the gp2x.
Ah.. nope the GBA emulator for the Wiz is NOT compatible with gb or gbc games. The emulator just exits to the main menu when trying to load a gb/gbc game.
So how are the controls on this thing? Comfortable?

the forums are filled with information and the developers are also frequenting this forum.
The gameboy emulator Lemonboy just received and update and this makes it much smarter better than the one shown here at 1:01

I don't know what i have to choose...
wiz or pandora? :-P
oerlichkeit 2 years ago
The Wiz is out now and is available. The 1st Batch of Pandoras pretty much is taken - there may be some left but you'd better be fast.
markvergeer 2 years ago
i know but it won't take much time to make a second batch after the release of the first batch....
i don't know what to choose...-.-
the wiz is more robust but the screen of the wiz is too little...
the pandora is expensive but it have so good specs and nubs...and a keyboard.
but it doesn't look like a robust handheld-.-
oerlichkeit 2 years ago
That's true. If the 1st batch gets a good reception the 2nd batch will be fairly easy to produce.
The Wizz is a pretty easy to use system, it really is an end consumer product, virtually monkey proof.
The Pandora is in fact a small Linux ARM based system with a Linux distro and (hopefully) a user friendly launcher on top.
One really is a media player/console and the other is a ultraportable Netbook like device with DS Lite dimensions but one screen.
