These guys weren't being bombed by America. They were being bombed by Britain. [In both world wars, America was a little late getting involved.] Germany and Italy were defeated at 2nd El Alamein shortly before the Americans landed in Africa.

Brando bullied directors, but when this movie was made I doubt he was in a position to do much bullying.

I don't agree that this is a silly scene. This movie had numerous good scenes, but the motorcycle scene with Brando and Schell is my favorite.
