I was a Randhurst mall rat. I was 9 when it opened. I lived in Prospect Heights, just a two block walk, so my friends and I practically lived there. Wonder what happened to all that cool sculpture we used to play on? Thanks for posting.
I just wanted to say..I live right across from Randhurst. It looks amazing! I love how the new movie theater is going up! It's looking tremendous...there is gonna be good stores in there...trust me I would know..my dad's a trustee in Mt. Prospect. It's gonna have a LOT of very nice stores!
First ever fully digital theater, no film and new technology extra large screen bigger than IMAX in the world!

(Part two of my comments) - My 4 brothers and I (we ranged in age from 3 to 10 years old) had a great time at the grand opening event - all of the stores were handing out small colorful aluminum keys, one of which would open a "treasure chest" for a prize. I'm curious to know what was in that time capsule at the top of the dome) Thanks so much! Cathy
As far as I know, the plan is to keep all of the anchors intact. I drove by there recently and all the anchors are still up and running, and they are even building some walls that are attached to the Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
My parents and grandparent talk about having to find a parking spot and walking allover downtown in the rain and cold. They talk about what a pain it was and was glad to go to the mall for the first time. You are absolutely right about history repeating itself. The next generation will love the mall concept, because the will hate shopping in the rain and cold. (40 years from now) Welcome to a new way of shopping completely enclosed multiple stores in a climate controlled enclosure.
ALMOST cried there... Too many memories! You did a great job on this doc. I learned many things I had never known before about Randhurst -- a place where I spent MANY, MANY hours through the 70s and especially in the 80s... Thanks for putting this together.
The Water tower used to become "Santa's Balloon" every Christmas, and he would be up there waving at the cars going by. Also, the bubblers at S.S. Kresge's was cool. Heart, Mahogany Rush and someone else in 1977. Good stuff.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Carson Pirie Scott (formerly Wieboldt's) will be the only anchor left intact.
