the song is about a spirtialist community discovered by a medium from the origial Cassada ,NY,he was lead by his seneca native american spirt guid,to where a huge vortex or portal is in the swamps of florida.now it is a spirtialist community where tarot readings and seances are common and the occasinal orb photograhy tours are part of what make this plac so special and unique that tom petty would feel inclined to write about it,as hav i and others touched by its magic.
A great song, I have it on vinyl ! Petty is like neil Young, he keeps ploughing on, and you have to be careful not to miss some of the stuff that might ottherwise fall by the wayside.
@garylongden I have to disagree, petty is nothing like neil young.. Neil young is a strange guy, with a lot of great music, petty is an everyday guy, with nothing but great music..
@june21stgem, I think that Young and Petty are similar in that they are both deeply ingrained in the traditions of mainstream , traditional American rock. A criticism of both is their lack of hits outside their fanbase. I would agree that Young enjoys the mantle of eccentric, Petty that of craftsman.
I got married in florida to a beautiful woman who i will always love, She use to visit a lady in Casa Dega,... This lady in this town told her she would meet a tall dark tanned man... We been married for 36 years.
It is spelled Cassadaga. I believe he might of spelled it different on purpose. Cassadaga is a spiritualist community in Florida. It is east of Orlando right before Deland off of I-4. It is very relaxing and has wonderful energy there. I guess Tom Petty was special too!
"I misspelled it," Tom admits. "It has two S's. Cassa Dega is in Florida, it's a town of fortune tellers not far from Gainesville. I actually wrote that on an airplane after reading an article in the New York Times about Cassa Dega. Mike came in with a track, I think about the same time as 'Refugee' and 'Here Comes My Girl', and we put those words to it, though we radically changed the music when we went in the studio."
I looked long and hard for this song on CD and finely found it on the box set PLAY BACK. This is my favorite TP tune. Thank so much for posting this great song. I know it was on the b-side of a 45 that was in jute boxs. That's where I first here it in a bar I use to go to. I played it every time I went to the bar. I have been a TP fan since 1977 when I saw them in Seattle.
Tom said that he accidently spelled the name wrong & it's actually Cassa Dega. Tom & the Boys are just awesome, I've seen them live like 5 times & each time was spectacular.
@wildpepr Actually the correct spelling is Cassadaga one word..It's between daytona and Orlando on I-4, not far from DeLand.. Neat place if you've never been
I've always been a Tom Petty fan, but never heard this. I used to visit Casadega once or twice a year while traveling in the area, it's the most unlikely town to find in Florida, with a very interesting history.
u sure u fan # 1 ??? i have the dvd box set the live anthologhy box set and 188 of toms songs including wilburys and live cuts of stuff like 3 versions of breakdown...I have never seen then live though ...they r putting out a new album and touring sometime soon ... im only fourteen so i couldent really go see a show in the 80s lol
this is the only place I can go to hear this song until I get the playback cd set, you can't get this song on itunes. I used to have the 45 that this was a b-side on, but I sold most of my vinyl 2 years ago like a dummy.
Still only 22 comments and 4300 views. This is one of the best songs people never heard. This should have been sqeuezed onto Torpedos, or Torpedos should have been a double album.
Kinda makes you wish some of the "other" artists would stop and listen to some of this incredible work....pure class, pure melody and pure heart and soul! Thanks for bringing this song to YouTube. My friend, you rock!
Petty at his best, can't believe this never made it on an album. HEY, Where'd the second ending go? There's an extra 2 minutes on the video, but the comeback never came back.
there are SO many great songs on the b-sides , that's something i love about collecting, finding new songs, and i know i could just buy the playback or download it, but it wouldn't be the same thing...
this should've been on Damn the Torpedoes...since this was actually the B-side of Don't Do Me Like That...it would probably have completed that album....
Living close and having been there with my very special Angel, who opened me to this song, Kudos to you the poster, and it was an experience with Aldara, I'll never forget.
This remarkable song just goes to show how Tom Petty treated his B-sides!
