Christians are much more likely to commit crimes, and there's an easy explanation for it. In their mind all they have to do is ask for forgiveness from their imaginary friend, and they are good to go. Killed somebody? Not a problem – repent, and you will go to heaven. That absolves them of personal responsibility. Hence the crazy crime rates among the religious.
@olegkikin Honestly, I think that those stats are misleading for both sides. The average person in the US is Christian so the average person in jail would be Christian as well. For the most part, Christians tend to take their "unquestionable faith" only to God, meaning they are skeptical and critical thinkers about every other topic. So what this means is that the average Christian doesn't practice what they believe, or at least they pick and choose. Ergo, crime does not correlate with either.

Moreover, you are ignoring SOOO many possible variables such as poverty which, your precious stats will show, correlates with Christianity. Slow down while you read this. Since atheists/agnostics are about 15% of the national population, if their lack of religion affected their morals they would make up MORE THAN 15% of prisons. But they actually make up LESS THAN THEIR *SHARE* at LESS THAN 1% of the prison population. Christians make up MORE THAN THEIR SHARE of prisons. Thus xtianity does not reduce crime.

But just to clarify, it does not raise crime either. imo, poverty is the prime factor and most impoverished people are Christian therefore stats shows Christians are more likely to end up in jail. On the other end, Atheists are, generally, middle to upper class because atheism tends to correlate with education etc. So their numbers are lower, but it isn't because their atheists.

For us skeptics the important point is that being an atheist or agnostic does not decrease your morality (as measured by rate of imprisonment). Poor girl. She should be pitied for her absence of world knowledge, and for her upbringing which sheltered her from an abiltiy to see with eyes open. I know how frustrating to read stuff like her post can be. If you do not believe, to her and others like her, you HAVE to be evil. Their teachings say it is impossible to live a clean, peaceful life without god, so that we exist is a slap in the face, and must be a lie.....or else what she has believed is, and has been false all along. Sad

Proof positive of what I have maintained for years: Xtians, and other "people of faith" are retarded. They make inane, self-serving arguments to support their unsupported "theory", while seeking to demonize all others who do not share their rather shallow worldview. They abdicate all personal responsibility in favor of blaming God for everything, while simultaneously seeking his "blessings". They hypocritically claim the high road while behind closed doors, they are far more perverted than I am.

@MongoTheLloyd America's Taliban, our radical evangelical Xtians, share far more in common with the Afghani Taliban than they do with Americans. They all claim sole ownership of the truth. They all want others to live by their idea of morallity (while not living by it themselves). They are all willing to bomb innocents if they cannot get their way (see bombings of black churches and abortion clinics, most perpetrated by white evangelical nuts). Religion breeds stupidity, dependence and violence.

haha, wow, i can't believe in this modern society, that people still believe in god, the fact that an old dusty book written thousands of years ago, has no proof, makes no sense, no logic what so ever, is still believed literally, it's a real shame, i'm not saying don't have faith, but religion in general creates so many evils compared to goods, that i wish there was no such thing of any religion

Christians are much more likely to commit crimes, and there's an easy explanation for it. In their mind all they have to do is ask for forgiveness from their imaginary friend, and they are good to go. Killed somebody? Not a problem – repent, and you will go to heaven. That absolves them of personal responsibility. Hence the crazy crime rates among the religious.

@olegkikin Honestly, I think that those stats are misleading for both sides. The average person in the US is Christian so the average person in jail would be Christian as well. For the most part, Christians tend to take their "unquestionable faith" only to God, meaning they are skeptical and critical thinkers about every other topic. So what this means is that the average Christian doesn't practice what they believe, or at least they pick and choose. Ergo, crime does not correlate with either.

@olegkikin I'm sorry. I like to think outside of numbers that can be twisted to mean literally anything and manufactured to say anything. Especially percentages. Moreover, you are ignoring SOOO many possible variables such as poverty which, your precious stats will show, correlates with Christianity. But they aren't poor cuz they are Christian, they are Christian because they are poor. Bottom line is that simple percentages don't tell anything when there are thousands of variables to consider

@natdogrocker - That's cute but 2 + 2 is still 4... but u r right about the complexity of correlations. What we would do is correlate different demographics with imprisonment & see which ones have the strongest correlation.
But u missed the point. The FACT that MORE Christians than atheists per capita wind up in prison, doesn't meant Christianity causes crime - but it DOES refute the claim that Christians are less likely to commit crime. It DOES refute the claim that atheists are more violent.

You also tried to justify it with the "repent and done" argument but that isn't the case. More Christians per capita are in prison because the general population has more Christians per capita than any other religion. But you picked up on the main point I was making: Stats don't mean anything in the face of an enormously complex correlation.

Slow down while you read this. Since atheists/agnostics are about 15% of the national population, if their lack of religion affected their morals they would make up MORE THAN 15% of prisons. But they actually make up LESS THAN THEIR *SHARE* at LESS THAN 1% of the prison population. Christians make up MORE THAN THEIR SHARE of prisons. Thus xtianity does not reduce crime.

@CO2Junkie Oh I'm sorry I did mix up your comments. You are right, Christianity does not decrease crime. But just to clarify, it does not raise crime either. imo, poverty is the prime factor and most impoverished people are Christian therefore stats shows Christians are more likely to end up in jail. On the other end, Atheists are, generally, middle to upper class because atheism tends to correlate with education etc. So their numbers are lower, but it isn't because their atheists.

@natdogrocker - I agree with everything you have written there. For us skeptics the important point is that being an atheist or agnostic does not decrease your morality (as measured by rate of imprisonment). We aren't bad people, at least no worse than the average Christian, according to that correlation.
We are not going to prison in droves. In fact we are rather safe to hang out with :D
So no need to worry.

Again, if there's 15% of atheist population, you would expect 15% atheists in prison, while you see less than 3%. That shows that atheists are much more moral than theists. We commit less crime.

@TiteProducts Nobody is arguing with that. However the share of theists in prison is much much higher than it should be. Thus an average theist commits much more crime than an average atheist. It's simple math.

@TiteProducts The point was that ONLY Atheists are immoral enough to commit crimes and therefore, the population percent of Atheists should be a staggering amount rather than a slim minority. Christians believe (typically ignorant ones, not saying they all do.) that the only ones who commit crimes against other men are people who aren't "close to god." Cause god fearing Christians obey their little book to the letter (of course) and as such are completely unable to commit crimes.

@olegkikin While I agree, I'd like to correct and add. I study Criminology professionally. Many people "find" God in prison, so having a low Atheist percentage is kind of expected. However, this is what I'd like to add:
Most criminals re offend. Especially the ones that "found God."
