I love this song, and respect Madonna as an artist, but I don't appreciate how she has painted not just a negative view of the politicians who wage war, but the American soldier as a destructive force. Soldiers have signed away their lives to take on an extreme challenge in the name of America. The American soldier is not the war, but the politician. Soldiers are but instruments. Soldiers stand for freedom, regardless of the mission. Do not hate the soldier, hare the war.

@skincub Actually there are two versions of this video. They are just slightly different, but it makes a huge difference. You're right, this one is without the blown up bodies etc, but there is this genious scene in which Bush takes the granade and lights up his cig. In the other version, the one with blown up bodies and all, there is no Bush. The granade just falls on the runway and everybody keeps staring at it. There should be a version with the blown up bodies AND Bush. It'd be even better!

To be honest, this was the first Madonna album I've ever bought in my life, and I loved it. The reason why it did so bad in sales remains a mystery. American Life is a song that is so relevant to many peoples lives, including mine, being in NYC, it is so relevant. It could be the album cover, but like the expression, "never judge a book by it's cover", with this album, clearly you shouldn't. I love this video, first time I've ever seen it.

Music critics are stupid anyway, that's given, but what they failed to realize about this album is that it's about Madonna looking at her past, present, future, and also observing the people around her. It's a album about herself and the role that she plays in society, it's NOT an album about "peace & love and how we should all stick together because war is bad".

People were disappointed in this LP because they went into it with fucked up expectations. And that's why THEY totally failed.

After all, she was routinely called vulgar. I think it was obviously anti- Bush but Madonna is no fool and realizes that the American "myth" makes her own possible. This video isn't about America necessarily. It is almost an homage to the idea that power comes through militancy. Good or bad.
