Why it was banned..? if its for "criticizing" bush, then sorry..there are mass of reports etc that do same on TV. If its for "weapons"..then again sorry..news show those during the day as well. So then probably because neither reportage nor news reach that many people as her videos...? Implies that politicians know about the strong influence of modern media especially on youth and dont want them to question the "american dream". Best prove how USA-System tries to keep people dumb and uneducated.
no wonder it was band its against war shocking it was band fucking controlling oil drinking corporate devil cock sucking Americans .........well there not all like that ovb
Americans are supposed to be living in a free country, yet most, if anyone did not see this version of the video in the USA. Pfffft! What a crock. It's a shame, cause this version far more interesting.
i loove this video! It honestly took balls for Madonna to express her views so explicitly. This video actually depicts exactly what i think about America. Honestly dont see why it is banned, america is the nation always boasting about freedom of speech.
I love this song, and respect Madonna as an artist, but I don't appreciate how she has painted not just a negative view of the politicians who wage war, but the American soldier as a destructive force. Soldiers have signed away their lives to take on an extreme challenge in the name of America. The American soldier is not the war, but the politician. Soldiers are but instruments. Soldiers stand for freedom, regardless of the mission. Do not hate the soldier, hare the war.
I understand why it was banned but I love the fact that MAdonna had the balls to write this song and this video exposes the US government. America being a place where some people have everything while their army gives hell to civilians in other countries in the right of.. ?
OF COURSE it's banned. It opposes the view of the American government. And we all know that's very very wrong and against all that America is supposed to stand for. Bad Madonna!
I'm not a fan of Madonna but I have a lot of respect for her for making this video. I wish she would have kept this video instead of giving into the PC idiots.
@bubbajolee he's talking 'about how American government think they have the right to make wars in other countries to impose their own point of view in the name of liberty =) it's kinda contradictory =)
This is interesting. I've never seen this version before. Hail to YouTube!. Why was it banned in the USA? It's a hell of a lot more interesting than the toned down version she made for USA airwaves., Yeah ,and I'm USA-American.
It's always funny how American stars like Madonna, Sean Penn, etc. are so critical of America, yet they live more in Excess than most Americans & bitch about the very system & people that made them rich in the first place.
I can't see how this was banned from MTV...there's WAY more explicit and inappropriate vids out there, clearly the Bush administration wanted to shut Madonna up for voicing her message about the war in Iraq. Freedom of speech my ass! People are WAY too sensitive today!
Yes, not the sanitized version, but still not quite the FULL original version - this one is without the blown up bodies / the dead kids etc... If you search on youtube enough - it is there.
@skincub Actually there are two versions of this video. They are just slightly different, but it makes a huge difference. You're right, this one is without the blown up bodies etc, but there is this genious scene in which Bush takes the granade and lights up his cig. In the other version, the one with blown up bodies and all, there is no Bush. The granade just falls on the runway and everybody keeps staring at it. There should be a version with the blown up bodies AND Bush. It'd be even better!
The title of this is misleading. This video was not "banned", Madonna chose to pull this version and substitute the one with the flags. I like this video very much and quite prefer it to the one with the flag, but given the time, she made the correct choice to pull this one.
im glad this video is on youtube this is the first time i have been able to view it since it came out when i was only 10 years old...i was starting to wonder what happened to freedom of the press.
This video should have been released, and no bitch should have ever banned it. Many Americans have no idea what their country has comitted in the world it seems. But this may have opened some eyes and ears.
Simplesmente fabuloso. Sua forma de expressão é formidável. Contra todo um sistema assassino ela expôs sua forma de visão de maneira crua, e bela; ignorando a hipocrisia de muitos e desafiando-os com sua ousadia marcante.
Am I the only one that thinks she looks old in this video? I like Madonna but dang I didn't realize she was aging so poorly while I was in high school dang!
@BLKENDOLLBARBIE Unfortunatelly you're right about the way she looks in this video. The time is passing for her too, a litle slowly I belive, but she's still a person, and no matter what her money can buy, she's getting old. But she will always be gorgeous.
@aluahalwa It was not banned. Madonna pulled it because she thinks it wasn't right to air it due to the Iraq War at that time. However, there was an another video of the song, with only Madonna singing in front of flags from different countries.
To be honest, this was the first Madonna album I've ever bought in my life, and I loved it. The reason why it did so bad in sales remains a mystery. American Life is a song that is so relevant to many peoples lives, including mine, being in NYC, it is so relevant. It could be the album cover, but like the expression, "never judge a book by it's cover", with this album, clearly you shouldn't. I love this video, first time I've ever seen it.
@TigerClaw116 At first this video was aired but shortly after its release Madonna herself decided to pull it out of TV due to the war that was going on back then. Then they played an edited version with none of the war stuff.
This is the reason I became a fan. Where is that Madonna now? That Madonna from "I'm going to tell you a secret"? "Exposing" the injustice of what people dare to think about Wallis Simpson? -.- Seriously, she's said it so many times, she's not going to do this again because people didn't like it and because it was the worst selling album in her career. To me, this was one of the most relevant parts of her career. Hard candy was a joke and now M.D.N.A seems to be its sequel.
@rainingblood33 now a days she only thinks about commercial success....sad, gimme all your loving is the same commercial shit, and nothing special.......
Music critics are stupid anyway, that's given, but what they failed to realize about this album is that it's about Madonna looking at her past, present, future, and also observing the people around her. It's a album about herself and the role that she plays in society, it's NOT an album about "peace & love and how we should all stick together because war is bad".
People were disappointed in this LP because they went into it with fucked up expectations. And that's why THEY totally failed.
omg @Maxelldemon, you totally get it! The American public completely made an ass out of this album, but in truth it's one of the greatest albums I've ever heard and I'm proud to say that I totally understand Madonna's point of view.
@madeyes4u Most americans are stupid though,, they get all their facts from fox, and murdoch, murdoch gets his facts by hacking into peoples voicemail
Even this version is REALLY tame compared to the director's cut, so it says something about the political landscape in America at the time that Madonna felt like she had to withdraw this for fear of her family.
Stop killing innocent children!!! That is ridiculous how American government motivate their invasion to Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan. They don't see that there is also NO democracy in Africa, because there is NO OIL!
the way I interpret this is... that madonna possibly realizes that her own sucess, the "american dream", or the american way of life is "sponsored" by war mongers.
the video was not banned. she decided not to release it, because the war started and she supported it, and didnt want to insult anyone and didnt want people to misinterpret it. (just like the top comment did). so better title would be UNRELEASED.
@Neshuah1 She did not support the war. She decided to pull it because now she had children and was already getting death threats for the video. She has always spoken out against our "war on terror" bullshit.
I completely agree with Maxelldemon.... Great video... Americans, you make wars to colonize other countries and you justify it saying you do it in the name of demacracy... can it be more hypocritical?
@besalu78 human history is full of war for colonization and for other reeasons america is just the latest and the most powerful to date they also wont be the last besides for democracy is a better excuse than for religon
@NOBODYSANGEL9 This guy "maxelldemon" gives a very clear answer about why madonna's video was banded. additionally for a reality check and for re-education the declaration of indepdence in regard to the staement that all have the rights to bare arms this was inafct about body appendages not weaponry - born to counteract the middle age practise of taking an individuals arms off of them if they were caught steeling, the idea was that in america people wouldn't need to steel to survive and so no matter the situation would always have their appendages i.e. the right to bare arms.
what the f*ck?i can't see the relavence of the video to the song.... the american dream was a dream that didn't consist of war but of freedom so is this just video steeped in irony and aimed at those that think commericalism is linked to the military, well its not...

@maxelldemon You are wrong in assuming this video portrays "American atrocities". It was really about Madonna admitting that she, herself, might be considered such an atrocity by some. After all, she was routinely called vulgar. I think it was obviously anti- Bush but Madonna is no fool and realizes that the American "myth" makes her own possible.
