Not at all amazing. ;)
It was, in fact, much better - more finely and astutely - developed than today, when everything is spelled out in huge block letters, as it were.
And it had to be, precisely because the technical means were modest compared to cinema in our days.
That's why visual expression, relying solely on the spectator's sight, attention and and interpretation, had to be very finely tuned and convincing.
