one of the problems with our media model is that the media isn't regulated enough by the government. That's why it's allowed to twist information and all but outright lie to sell you what you either want to hear or what sounds good so you will give them ratings.

What does violence of government have to do with the problem that many of the issues expressed here are not really overblown at all, but rather misunderstood by the Media and actually underrepresented in their seriousness?
American media is notoriously poor precisely because of its profit motive. It wants to sensationalize and simplify things for mass consumption. It's McDonalidized Infotainment. That doesn't mean the problems of Peak Oil and Global Warming aren't real
The government educates the citizens, tightly regulates the media and controls the information the people need to know (particularly economic info) - the media cannot speak truth to power because it is so dependent on that power.
The problem with the arguments in this thread is that people simply assert that there will be a magic cure--a magical new substitute that will ride down on a beam of light to fix the problem in the nick of time, as if we live in TVland and this is 24. That's not reality.
It's a fundamental flaw in the field of economics. It's always assumed growth is infinite and that all problems will fix themselves and all will be fine like a faerietale. That's just not true.
I am not saying civilization will disappear, either. I am saying we're in for a crude awakening. The current capitalist consumer model can't continue like this: it's unsustainable, but few people want to see the problem because it's unpleasant. People are accustomed to cheap oil, which is why they whine when it goes up a few cents. They really don't comprehend the severity of Peak Oil.
Nuclear power could have helped ease the transition, but just look at the rabid anti-nuclear environonsense.
It's not really a case of someone eventually trying to come up with a solution. The issue is timing and relative utility compared to oil.
By the time they recognize the problem and stop pretending infinite production and consumption increases are possible, it will be too late. The fact that a profit can be made later doesn't mean they will think ahead that far or that they can suddenly "switch" as the market demands it. It's not that simple as increased demand = more supply from nowhere.
There are potential alternatives for oil, but they are not actually good substitutes. There is currently no substitute that can do what oil does.
Moreover, even if people DO realize economic benefits, that doesn't magically manifest time, resources. You overestimate the intelligence and the will of the majority of people to recognize the problem and deal with it. It's difficult getting people to even comprehend the idea of what Peak Oil is, much less get them to do something.
In the meantime, oil will get precipitously expensive. We are going to see the end of cheap oil, not the end of oil itself. That is the problem given our entire society is predicated on the existence of cheap oil and mass consumerism that can only be sustained by it.
We are poorly prepared for this problem. Claiming the market will fix it won't make that a reality. That requires time, money, the will, and a suitable substitute, of which there currently is none that has the utility of oil.
So people will just ignore the obvious money making opportunity of providing a cheap alternative to oil? Or do you simply think that development of an alternative is not feasible?
Peak Oil doesn't mean oil is going to magically disappear. It means that we are hitting a point wherein the amount of oil we are able to extract will not continue to increase via production. This means that demand will outstrip supply. We already seeing the foundations of this problem having an impact with rising fuel costs.
Moreover, you can't simply "switch" to a new resource, and the invisible hand won't suddenly fix the massive deficit of action and infrastructure necessary to change.
There are disturbing and brutal real life videos, such as "Fitna" and so many others, made about the present or past societies we, as humans live in.
As Jiddu Krishnamurti said, we must change ourselves, outwardly, as well as inwardly; there are videos here at youtube, where Krishnamurti with David Bohm or Dr. Anderson are discussing such issues.
Are really the governments at the core of all evil in the world, or is all about this process of people changing themselves inwardly and outwardly?
I don't know if you first heard that phrase from the Richard Dawkins video but Dawkins doesn't actually even believe that. He was encouraged by a production company to use that title because it sounded sensational and he only agreed to use it if there was a question mark at the end; "Religion: The Root of All Evil?".
Just FYI. I'm not trying to start shit.BTW I'm an Atheist.
The "war of nature" that occurs in evolution happens without governments. Isn't limited resources, both within individuals and externally in the environment to blame?
Wasn't there a time before governments when groups slaughtered each other? And if governments were disbanded wouldn't it just be the same as before. I admittedly don't know much about history or biology but from my ignorant point of view my point of view seems reasonable. ;)
I understand the impact of imagery on younger generations.I know that your motives are the most honerable.I just think War Porn is wrong under any circumstances.
The pictures were completely necessary. This video wouldn't have made it's point without them. Those gruesome pictures are the product of YOUR government. If you dance around the facts, then the arguments for anarchy never hit home and become moot.
Good point, VCADD, however, I don't know what would change people in better human beings.
When I was a kid, I've found a book containing images of naked skin and bone female and children from Auschwits and Bruchental in a book called "The Factories of Death" and believe me, as a child, I just couldn't believe or imagine there can be possible such (I don't even have the right word for it!, perhaps Evil Stupidity) on this Planet. It made me realise that everything is hopeless with such realities.
It's not regular people, it's mainly the wealthiest 1-2% that run this whole show. Of course soldiers, cops, prison guards, media shills, etc all cooperate willingly. Otherwise they would take their weapons and turn them on their commanders. Or they would quit the army, police, etc and do something that doesn't brutalize human beings. Humans are altruistic in nature b4 they get conditioned by a corrupt society to be callous and hateful. Babies aren't naturally evil are they? No, they're Taught.
A basic Austrian understanding of economics combined with an examination of previous resources that we ran out of indicates that peak oil isn't a valid issue.
Prices increase as supply slowly drops, increasing market demand for an alternative, which in turn generates at lease one of not several.
And people wonder why I don't watch TV anymore.
