hahaha! A little dangerous having a rim up in the air, could kill ya on the way back down. This is what i use: a field tile core (18" diameter hollow tube with ribbing, they can stand the meanest of farmers so they work great for explosions), okay put an old lawn mower tire on top of a balloon or balloons and put a regulation basket ball on top of the tire. It'll have a very inaccurate path and range of over 500 feet if you put more than 2 11" balloons. Little safer than a giant hunk of metal.
Every 4th we fill a few large garbage bags, tape a fuse to it, fill another bag full of helium. She goes above the tree tops and you get the greatest sounding explosions. Lots of laughs. Very dangerous though. The bags have to be opened up first and then collapsed otherwise the least little static spark and you can lose your eardrums.
oxygen - vigorously accelerates combustion so if you use 90% of oxygen and 10% of acetylene or propane it will make a bigger bang soundwise and more violent, not a lot of fire, if you looking for more fire use more fuel, less oxygen, but if you want to blow up something like this tire in the video use more oxygen
@sparklerbombg Light the torch and bring up a neutral flame, not carborizing nor oxidizing, snuff it out and begin filling. Large ballons are the safest way to have a great time.
With a bottle rocket. Just wedged it in the hole where the valve stem was and lit it. When it went of it shot down in the tires and popped the balloon.
@andrewandlee I think that this stuff is seriously dangerous and people like you are only encouraging others to play with these dangerous things! I am a retired FD Captain (London). so I should know! Oh, by the way, it had me giggling to the point of drooling! This stuff appeals to small boys of all ages! (In my case 62). Keep 'em coming! I love it! Screw the danger! You're right! Bigger! Louder! That's what makes it sooooo good! Just stay out of the Darwin Awards :)
@neighbour666 never, ever, visit the 'energetics' forum at science madness. a section of the site I would be quite happy to see the back of.
two people (I should say, kids, as they were) have died as a result of their "I know what I'm doing" attitude. one of whom had literally a kilo or more of high explosive to hand. there have been, what seems to me, an increasing number of teens / early twenties guys nearly killing / actually killing themselves / others playing 'pyro and army guy' recently.
i would aproximate the ratio (from the reaction) to be 2 parts acetylene 5 parts oxygen (1:2.5) so that you have no unused oxygen and no unburned acetylene though i would watch out for carbon monoxide but with that distance and outdoors it shouldnt be any problem;)
the same mixture you would use to cut steel. We got the neutral flame and then cut the main valves off on the tank to cut off the flame, then turned it back on and filled the balloon.
@wargo52 guys weere going on about this at Science Madness, and how they wanted to fill stuff and get the mixture right using all kinds of exotic stuff. some of them didn't seem to appreciate how simple it is and how big of a bang just a balloon will make
Right on, lol im glad in not the only redneck in the world that thinks that is a fucking blast....
I was reading your comments below... its was easier to stomp the flame out on the bottom of your shoe.... just smack the tip of the torch off your shoe, works great....
Also, try a 3 liter soda bottle, and put fuel oil on an old rag, and set it across the bottle, lite and enjoy ( =
I have just looked at several Oxy-acetylene vids and when i saw this one i signed in just so i could vote. Absolutely incredible. What ratio were you using ?
We lit the torch and added oxygen til you get that neutral flame, you know ready for cutting. Then cut the main valves off on the tank. When the torch goes out cut the mains back on and you have the perfect mixture. The balloon in the video was about the size of a basketball. Thanks for the comment.
well the tire on top went about as high as the trees. Probably around 75 feet or so. The rim on the very top went way above the trees. Probably somewhere around 150 to 200 feet.
@wargo52 There's also the impatient man's way of snuffing the flame where you smack the flame against a leather glove (have to do it fast, makes a muffled pop)..
We used a 12" party ballon. But if possible you need something stronger. They will pop and you know when you handle ballons you build up static electricity. We didn't get the accident on tape but we had 7 ballons made up and one popped and the static ignited all of them. Lets just say that we ended up in the ER, all 3 of us had busted eardrums and one of my buddies had second degree burns on the face and pieces of balloon in his eye. And had to have reconstructive surgery on one of his eardrums.
sht! you can do this fairly safly, go and get yourself a cheap beach ball from a cheap shop, 20 metres of speaker wire and 20 of thin plactic tube from super cheap auto and fill it through the tube and for the fuse wrap some fuse wire round the top of a bunch of 5 matches and tape this to the ball( b4 u fill it) and join up your speaker wire and a little 9v battery should set it off ;D
That tyre rocket was stunning. Good work guys. :)

try pressuring the mix of gases it in a scuba tank or something like that to high pressures and detonating it. or a pvc or steel pipe

Its roughly 70% oxygen and 30% acetylene.

@wargo52 That's a pretty ingenious idea, but at the same time, fucking stupid in balloons which give off static so easily lol.
