I just came here because i just read that Android phones record user-locations according to research on the english newspapper The Guardian. So I believe that this is not only a great movie but also a preview for our future!!!
Honestly, I think that the people screaming "OMFG 1984 IS ALREADY HERE!", are over-reacting; if what they're saying is true, then they shouldn't be able to say it. Now that's not to say that it COULDN'T happen, but I don't think people will take your points seriously if you just jump to such rash conclusions; look at how people are viewing the Tea Party.
If you want to talk about a novel's predictions coming true, I think that Fahrenheit 451 is more accurate, at least in the 1st-world countries, considering the severely diminishing interest in books and the emphasis being placed on "political correctness".
If you want to talk about a novel's predictions coming true, I think that Fahrenheit 451 is more accurate, at least in the 1st-world countries, considering the severely diminishing interest in books and the emphasis being placed on "political correctness". And no, the irony of this post isn't entirely lost on me.
they should make a new 1984 film, and by "they" i mean someone other then hollywood, otherwise the story would lose all of its "distopian" qualities and turn out to be just another movie about good over evil, personal triumph, love, and all the other garbage hollywood makes.
Worse part is the shit already happened, The level of 1984 is an extreme and is pretty much the end when it's fully realized, but we already their, it will only be a matter of time when we reach 1984s level.
The song and the album by Eurythmics are both marvellous. What some commentors here seem to not understand is that the music is actually portraying the musical landscape of the Orwell dystopy, the type of robotic pop music you would hear if you turned on a radio in Oceania. The song "Doubleplusgood" is the best example, where the song itself becomes an obnoxious commercial for Oceania and its ideology. The album stands on its own feet as an artistic interpretation of Orwells novel.
Greatest book I have ever opened up....From the first sentence, I was addicted.... PS, I do not even really like to read, but this book sent chilles down by spine... Books normally don't have that impact on me lol...
When the film first came out I thought that the Eurythmics soundtrack/ theme song was wrong for the bleak dystopia of the book and the film. The concept of 1984 was that it could be anytime in the future, but this synthpop song firmly roots the film in the real 1984, and nothing dates a film like a contemporary pop song for a theme tune. Some studio exec who'd never even heard of Orwell probably got cold feet when he saw how depressing the film looked to the all important yoof demographic.
@jaguarhero no we don't and especially not a blockbuster, that's taking a shit on such an amazing book, they should keep faithful to the story and not focus on action if there is ever another film
It really is unfortunate that all the trailers for this film have obnoxious generic 80s music playing in the background. It says nothing about the movie itself.
i think tis stuff could happen but think about it
if an averager american got sent into the twilight zone and ended up in "1984" they would have destroied the party not even an american any body! from this day in age would have destroied the party we love with all our hearts and wouldn't have betrayed the one we love even if we have to face our greatest fear with out fear the party has no control over them and goodbye big brother=sry had 2 read this 4 my finales this week
It isn't just fear it's doubt. Those two combined create more of a weakness then love creates strength. If people ever let something like this happen, it will be over an extremely slow course of time. like frogs being boiled.
People wouldn't overthrow it because it would be nature to them.
The party gets rid of free thinking, so why question it?
so maybe a few would, but they can be done away with or "changed".
Well maybe we are. But people discussing this matter tend to forget that a lot of people see through these lies, especially the governments. I'm not saying that people like us (even considering something like propaganda) are the masses, because clearly we aren't, I'm just saying that symbols all have different meanings but the root to those ideas are still the same. And your idea seems appropriate, still people have the power to change. That's the only thing separating us from the animals.
It is all happening so slowly, that not many will notice when big brother will show himself at it's fullest and books like this and many more things will be errased from the past, and vanish away. We must open our eyes to the truth now, before it's too late
George Orwell could definitely see into the future. As you are reading this the government can check into your computers. And when you use your cell phone later, Big Brother will know where you are and what you are doing. I'm sure it's really possible for something like this book to really happen. Think about it.
I believe the imprisionment and Room 101 was done perfectly but the ending was totally off. I didn't care for the ending much, but it was overall a very nice film.
After I read the book I watched this trailer. Marvelous cast I must say. John Hurt is excatly that Winston Smith I imagined. And Richard Burton... No-one would have been a better choice for O'Brian.
it is actually it is classed as cyberpunk , just metropolis 1927 is , it what heavily influenced the dystopian future setting for most cyberpunk tales like equilibrium , it has the constant surveillance like seen in thx 1338 , remember cyberpunk doesn't always have to be in cyberspace ,
They employed some doublethink with the song for this trailer. On one hand you've got the narrator and the scenes portraying it as something very serious, and you have some shitty pop song playing in the background. The other trailer remains faithful.
At the end of the credits it says that was made between two dates like was predicted by George Orwell (April to August 1984). This movie Instead of a future prediction like was the book, it was made like a distopic present, like a "what if...?"

Tim Robbins was working on a screenplay, but I heard he gave up on it. I don't think he has the funds... What a shame. This is a movie people really need to see.

They're making a remake of 1984 next year. I think Christian Bale would make a good WInston, he was brilliant as Cleric John Preston in a similar themed film, Equilibrium.
What strikes me at the end of 1984 when Winston is "re-educated" via MiniLuv, could he still have remants of his previous thoughts and engage into doublethink once again to rally against Big Brother???
Yeah, because Palin is the one pushing for socialism.
DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT SOCIALISM IS????
Obama is ten times more of a big government, take away freedom of speech and guns, socialist that McCain and especially Palin ever dreamed of being. Read up on socialism and then decide whether you want to vote for a guy who promises to take care of all your nanny state needs.
I hadn't thought about the V thing. I was thinking the exact same thing about the music though. (shudders) Admittedly, the music is depressing and scary in its own way.
What the hell are you complaining about? "80's pop music in the soundtrack." ...The year the film came out was in fact 1984. The Eurythmics were one of the biggest groups at that very time. The song playing in the trailer is entitled, "Sexcrime (1984)." It's a dark dance single that was a hit, and one of the best songs the band ever released. Anything that might get young people interested in a seriously depressing albeit intense movie about the great book "1984" works wonders for me.
Does Winston sound like Kane from "Alien" or Sutler from "V for Vendetta" to you? I do. Winston is portrayed by John Hurt who was in Alien in 1979 as Thomas Kane (in the film, he has no first name) and would portray Adam Sutler in "V for Vendetta" based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd and it's James McTeigue's first film. REMEMBER THIS.
i totally agree with that statement. in school i have a sociology class. In our text book it says that the government can break into your house tap into your computer and wire it so they always know what you type or do on the internet. Also the government can go into your savings and take money out. It made realize that George Orwell's theory is very realistic and very scary.
This is by the same author who did Animal Farm, but what amazes me is that this film is that it came out 15 years before that crap movie version of AF. It was a great book though.
cause all the emotions you experience watching the entire movie are shrinked in a time leap of a couple of minute, therefore you perceive it more intensely
My God. Winston is played by the guy who played Sutler in V for Vendetta. Mind=blown!

They're making a remake of 1984 next year. I think Christian Bale would make a good WInston, he was brilliant as Cleric John Preston in a similar themed film, Equilibrium.

r they really??? hells yes!!
tetzelpretzel1216 3 years ago
From what I've been hearing they are going to start shooting the remake sometime next year.

What strikes me at the end of 1984 when Winston is "re-educated" via MiniLuv, could he still have remants of his previous thoughts and engage into doublethink once again to rally against Big Brother???
Bartman954 3 years ago
The music they chose is shite. What were they thinking?

Is this footage of a McCain/Palin rally?
holyshititscharlieee 3 years ago
Yeah, because Palin is the one pushing for socialism.
DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT SOCIALISM IS????
Obama is ten times more of a big government, take away freedom of speech and guns, socialist that McCain and especially Palin ever dreamed of being. Read up on socialism and then decide whether you want to vote for a guy who promises to take care of all your nanny state needs.

i think the music is really eerie. I likeit

WTF??
that song is sooo far from the real spirit of 1984. it sounds like a Flash Gordon movie.
man, is it a coincidence that Ingsonc "V" and "V" for Vendetta? I think Moore and Lloyd push to far in their tribute grafic novel.
sombrasul 3 years ago 2

We can see this every day in the USA now. When will people say enough is enough.
livefastdieyoung26 3 years ago
i totally agree with that statement. in school i have a sociology class. In our text book it says that the government can break into your house tap into your computer and wire it so they always know what you type or do on the internet. Also the government can go into your savings and take money out. It made realize that George Orwell's theory is very realistic and very scary.
alexomalley1 3 years ago
The use of the Eurythmics is totally stupid. It's far too upbeat for both the subject matter and pace of the film.
Bizarre.
discosebastian 3 years ago 2
I agree, I don't really understand why they would use that. Apart from drawing attention.
Picassia 3 years ago 2
that's probably it. but it's not that bad. i enjoyed it

This is by the same author who did Animal Farm, but what amazes me is that this film is that it came out 15 years before that crap movie version of AF. It was a great book though.
mattjnor98 3 years ago 2
Why are the trailers mostly much more better, and have better atmosphere, than the movie itself?
merkur96 3 years ago
cause all the emotions you experience watching the entire movie are shrinked in a time leap of a couple of minute, therefore you perceive it more intensely
