@BufirdMauhaney Be Glad you don't Live Around Here Because This Stop Sign Is Strictly Enforced. I See People Zip Right Over The Tracks And Get Pulled Right Over. 4 People This Week Alone. It's There For A Reason.
@skyman2002 I could see the stop sign being enforced, but legally they can't enforce that speed limit sign because it is not a rectangular white "regulatory" sign. Same way they can't enforce the suggested speed limit on on ramps and curves.
@iceman977th Yeah, but that is easily disputed in court. If the speed limit is 35, and this sign says 20, if you are going under 35 and they gave you a ticket there is no way they could enforce the ticket. They probably just hope you pay the ticket rather than going to court. 8 out of every 10 traffic tickets would easily be won in court if people took them to court.
@v12tommy Did i say a speeding ticket? No, I said WRECKLESS DRIVING. If they can proove you did anything, such as going too fast with kids around or something, then they will nail you.
@iceman977th Yeah, you would get a wreckless driving ticket for speeding. It is the catch all ticket. For instance if you run a stop sign in a mall parking lot, they can't give you a ticket for running a stop sign because it is private property, but they can give you a ticket for wreckless driving or careless driving. Those are even easier to beat than if you got an actual speeding ticket.
funny how it tells the pedestrians to keep it under 20. I also see Caution Slow Children signs in wisconsin. Calling the kids a half an hour early would do. jk
hey how would you go putting a web cam up on your line seems you live so close be good to see and put the radio comms as well be great cam site cheers
But they don't need to stop if the (o)=(o) lights and bells are not operating. That's the whole purpose of the grade crossing signals.
If I knew who to contact, I'd ask them to remove the needless stop signs and save pollution and traffic back-up. Imagine how many vehicles needlessly stop there everyday.
It's a low visibility crossing.... and if the power is out, unless there are solar backups, and with so many trees around, likely not.... the signals won't activate.
The signals have battery backup. Depending on how often activated, they can work for many days on battery back-up. But it WOULD be better if they had a green light to indicate there is no power outage or dead battery bank. In China, they have a blue lamp which illuminates all the time except when the signals activate. No blue tells you the signal may be dead. If the engineer sees the signals are not working, he can greatly slow the train. Nix the STOP sign. Powerul horn is also good warning.
"If I knew who to contact, I'd ask them to remove the needless stop signs and save pollution and traffic back-up. Imagine how many vehicles needlessly stop there everyday."
I doubt there's ever more than one or two vehicles at the intersection at any one time. Also, as the train is moving relatively slowly, there's probably no real need for anything more than what's there. Still, I don't think I've ever seen a STOP sign at a signalized crossing.
My concern is more how many vehicles a day NEEDLESSLY stop, then proceed? = needless brake wear, pollution and fuel consumption.
When you consider the fuel burned to attain speed, then cause that investment to be wasted by stopping, then expend more fuel to accelerate again, it adds up. I would not stop there. And I would write the traffic department about removing the needless impediment.
maybe you're unaware that trains can kill you. Lawsuits would be everywhere dumb butt. Someone would say, there werent signs warning me about the crossing, if they survive. If they dont, the family files lawsuits. DUH DUH DUH!!
just sayin. If you dont have signs warning about a rural crossing of trains someone could drive right out in front of a train if they're not used to the area even if a horn sounds warning there is a train. If someone gets hit and survives, they could file lawsuits againt the railroad not putting any stop signs at the rural crossing there. Or if they die, the family could file lawsuits for the same reason.
Gates shouldn't matter. The lights should get your attention and they should be enough. Gates actually aren't needed at crossings, their just there just in case someone doesnt see. But you should always see the lights regardless.
Another good one skyman, keep it up. I wish the few grade crossing in Billerica had lights. But the old Billerica & Bedford track hardly gets used so if a train does go down the track, they stop and flag the crossings.
Horn = Winner

Why have a STOP sign with grade crossing signals?
Dumb. Stopping everyone NEEDLESSLY wastes fuel and generates pollution and wear and tear on vehicles.
robertgift 4 years ago
It's probably to get people to stop at the crossing since there aren't any gates on the crossbucks.

They stop there for a reason. What if the crossing lights were to malfunction and you just kept going as if there was no train approaching?
Altanore 3 years ago
With your logic, EVERY crossing should have STOP signs.
One should be listening for the powerful locomotive horn.
If I cannot see far enough down the track both directions, I open my window a little.
I have never known of those grade crossing signals to fail. They ALL have battery back up.
Yes, gates are not needed. They are VERY expensive. The flashing red lights (o)=(o) are enough. Bells are for pedestrians!
(Perhaps blind pedestrians.)
