  • I was his heart surgeon, and can vouch for his authentic soul.

  • Oh to the days he had hair.

  • This is the "other" non - commercial Elton John that 99.9% of the general public has no idea exists. Just by clicking on this song, you are officially either a Elton elite fan, or smarter than the rabble - or both.

  • @wpollock1 both ; ) thanx.

  • My dad showed me this song a few weeks ago and since then I haven't been able to listen to it without crying. I lost my older brother a couple years ago and every time I think of him I listen to it...Thank you for making such good music, you have no idea how much this song means to both my dad and I.

  • This is so good, I have an older and younger boy, and a just so great older girl, I wish I would have been able to have here heard this back then...I love you girl...

  • This song... I sang it over and over again, every night, to my son when I was pregnant with my second child. I just had to change the word 'brother' to 'sister'!!! I still cry when I hear EJ singing it...

  • Inspiration is that which flows as you begin when you have no idea about the ending. If every artist had waited until the whole picture was seen in the Masterpiece, not a sound would be heard today. No framed art would exist. Not one poem, or book, or quotation would have been penned.

The way to greatness is to move, use, execute, attempt, waste and fail.

  • Elton John's music still stands the test of time.

  • 7 people are idiots.

  • @thopper73 And did not discover anything :)

  • Tennis service at 2:46 !

  • A pretty underrated song, but then again most of Elton's best songs are.

  • MultiPaintpot, So sorry you got bullied. Solace in music has gotten many through.

  • Listen how clearly his pronunciation of the words are. Beautiful song.

  • i love this song is so simply and nice.thank elton for you music.

  • This has always been one of my fav EJ and Taupin songs. The seamless blend of lyric and music is absolutely beautiful. This is a great version of the song however I still believe the best version is from EJ's Austrailia show w/the Philharmonic back in '87. The orchestra backing EJ during this song is amazing and his voice is brilliant. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!!

  • thank you so much elton and bernie i heard this song on the radio the othher day ive never cryed so much over your songs as i have to this ive been looking for a song for my little boy and now ive found it, i now have a song for all my kids and there all yours ive been a big fan off yours since i was 12 i got bulled a lot at school when i came home at night i would listen to all your songs and evey thing would be all right agane thank you so much for sharing your music love 1 big fan xx

  • ernie and elton were boyfriends ?

  • @anibalnikov47 No, Bernie and Elton wre never boyfriends. When they were put together to write songs at fairly young ages (Bernie wrote lyrics, Elton wrote music) they clicked as friends as they were both shy, loved muisc, collected vinyl recoreds, and more...Bernie even lived with Elton and Elton's Mom. They feel like brothers as opposed to friends. Bernie is heterosexual and altways has been, But, non-romantically, Bernie and Elton do make beautiful music together :)

  • @anibalnikov47 Who's Ernie? Bernie and Elton were never lovers..

  • The tears just flow.

  • @Msdistarr GAY

  • @anibalnikov Are you fucking 10 years old? That would explain your reply to my comment. And what the hell does your reply "Gay" even mean? I'm not homosexual and my original comment does not lead you to believe that I was in a happy mood (happy & gay), so please explain it to me. You have no fucking idea what meaning this song has for me and why it would make me cry. I'm thankful that I can listen to a piece of music and actually "Feel" something and say so, instead of insulting someone

  • This is the best song i have ever heard!

  • wonderful, love it.......

  • I think that Paul played this solo live this one time only. I know him personally but I've never thought to ask him about it! He is a humble and brilliant man.

  • Wow!!! Awesome song, beautiful!

  • Great Song, From One Of The Best Album Elton John Ever Did!!!!!

  • Elton John was incredibly good for his first three albums and I still love all those songs. More than likely Bernie's influence. They should team up again. After Bernie, Elton is just another pop star.

  • @ianbeddows Ummm.... Elton hasn't stopped writing with Bernie in over 40 years-- check out his last four albums-- both Elton and Bernie in top form. Where'd you get the idea they stopped working together???

  • @GavinLiamLogan they did go their separate ways for a while, maybe like 3 or 4 elton albums didnt feature taupin...they werent the same.

  • <3 <3 <3

  • you are my greatest discovery.

    I love you Maddie.

Keep the faith, uncle EJ and BT will help you help you growing up, please listen to the words.

  • i feel bad for not knowing just how awesome he was.. i mean really im blown away by his vocals.. <3

  • @ashleyh81

Given the enormous mountain of useless saccharin pop shlock that Elton's produced over the past 30 years, it's easy to forget what an absolute giant he was during that period from about 1970 to 1972, when he flirted very briefly with actual rock music and in the process produced some of the greatest songs of the decade. This video shows just what a phenomenal force he really was in those early days...and he was only 23 years old when this was recorded!

  • I wish there was a "love" instead of "like" button to click! It's incredible to me that Sir Elton was only 23 when this was made!

  • his.voice.

  • i can't believe people look at elton john with disdain only for being homosexual, who cares if he is son when he offers us this sort of magic?

  • @wvoutlaw2009 I didn't say he is worse than me.

  • john lennon is in the audience

  • The worst cellist ever.

  • where can I get this bbc session???? :( it's just amazing.... I would like to know the name of the album.... it would be nice if you can help me.... :) thank you.

  • @carosupersonic - It was on his first (I think) Album just called "Elton John". Had a black cover with just a pic of Elton's face on it and is now out on CD at Amazon - I still have my vinyl!

If you like The Greatest Discovery you'll probably like I Need You To Turn To as well on this album. Another one of their amazing love songs.

    Noreen

  • @NornyD Empty Sky was first album

  • How beautiful. It makes me wonder if my brother who arrived in Feb. 1970 had similar feelings for my brother who arrived in Feb. 1974.

Sometimes Elton and Bernie got it so RIGHT!

  • In 1972, I asked my very smart sister what the most beautiful song in all the world was. She wrote down this title on the top of her list. I told you she was smart.

  • Wow, what a treat! And the great Paul Buckmaster playing too? Wonderful.

  • So funny to see Elton with his real hair.

  • Bernie sure could write them!

  • Just noticed that it's Paul Buckmaster (conductor & arranger of most of Elton's classic work) on Cello!

  • Bernie looks 16

  • This gem of a song showcases Elton John's amazingly versatile voice and Bernie Taupin as a superb lyricist.

  • Elton's new album The Union, with Leon Russell, is great. Don't just take my word for it, Rolling Stone give it 5 stars ***** too

  • absolutely lovely. absolutely lovely.

  • that's the best song I've ever heard. And Elton is sooo awesome. Look at him there- and now today! Ohmygosh. What for a legend. I'm speechless....

  • i have an older sister, and when i was born, my mother used to play this for my sister. gotta love elton

  • I can't beleive his voice was better here than in 2010. Okay, maybe not better, just so very different. Who would have though that this would be some of his best work ever even after all these years. I saw EJ perform this live with the orchestra in 1987 and I just felt the most immense honor at being in the presence of pure genius.

  • W my childhood best friend went on many a perfect journey. He shared the album way back when...Thanks!

    Greatest....friends and/or family?

    No answer here.

  • The Greatest Discovery from the 1970 WAS THE YEAR mY bABY bROTHER dAVID mICHAEL bALDWIN WAS bORN.

  • The greatest discovery is that elton john was born a genious & a true artist.

this is a master piece, later it even got better

  • The Greatest Discovery from the 1970 Elton John album and is one of Bernies most beautiful lyrics. This song was played at my son's baptism in 1982. Just beautiful! Thanks for posting!

    EJ fan for life!

  • I have the same middle name as Reg "Kenneth" And I'm So Honored

  • @mactheartofwarfare : It's Reginald Dwight

  • @TheBlockDog It's Reginald Kenneth Dwight actually.

  • It doesn't get any better. Long live Reg & Bernie !

  • really beautiful!

  • dude, these people who helped to make this are awesome.

  • i think this version is a bit better than the studio version. the horns in the end are louder than on the album. i really like that. it makes it a bit more dramatic.

  • thanks a lot

  • The song is not "Tonight" it's "The Greatest Discovery" from Dwight's second album titled, 'Elton John."

  • his voice is just perfect in 1970

  • is anybody can tell me the name of elton's song with the word "tonight" many time inside ..thanks

  • its simply called 'tonight". from blue moves.

  • o yes the blue moves album.. i remember now ...many thanks

  • The song is called Tonight. It is from the album "Blue Moves" released in 1976

  • ok many thanks

  • It's impossible not to cry when I listen to that song...

Thank you Bernie, thank you Elton, thank you Paul!!!!

  • My mom had this album and played this song for me and my brothers when I was ten. I honestly can't think of any other album that was so complete with unique and original tracks. Seriously... could be a masterpiece.

  • Why can't cellists ever play a song without the music right in front of them? =\

  • Paul Buckmaster is such an awesome name for a celloist

  • Elton and Bernie - the greatest team in the world! <3

  • @MrsDelle Uhm...Lennon/McCartney ?

  • The best years for Elton in my opinion, it all went south after Madman...Incredible!

  • i've never heard this one before!! what a great discovery... (har har).

  • woops sorry, meant to give you a thumbs up....its 3 am so I'm not too bright at this time :)

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

  • omg me too! yay elton!

  • wow elton is hot! I love the overalls

  • Elton & Bernie...you guys make my heart cry...

  • i never heard this song before but i wish i had

Elton john will live on forever even when he dies

btw plz check out my channel if i get 100 channel views i will try to make a video

  • I bought this album with this wonderful song and and when my son was nearly 5 years old I took his hand, with 'The Greatest Discovery' playing in the backround, and we walked over to the carry cot where his little brother Lee was lying and made a promise then. That I would build a bond between them that no one, not even me, would ever be able to break.

It was the only thing I ever did that was a success.

  • I have to cry.

  • ts so beautiful and good!!!

  • This is so beaufiful... Great lyric and his voice...*_*

  • "A warm hand for Bernie Taupin" - he he!classic Elton humour! probably went right over everyone's heads back then!

  • Elton and Bernie's music will live on forever.

  • One of my most favourite songs!

  • wow, I have this recording in studio, but it´s amazing to watch a live performance by elton from the 70s!!!! Thanx!!

  • love this song!

  • Brilliant

  • YOu just cant get any better than elton! :)

  • i love this song, i love this voice.. i love ELTON JOHN!

  • Love this song...and it's so cute when he introduces Bernie...and Bernie's so cute too...they just didn't know how big they were gonna become!

  • Fantastic song

  • Love this song.

    Full of heart

  • this is staggering. such genius the world rarely sees. wow.

  • Amazing performance!!!

  • Incredible lyrics... remarkable music. Exquisite.

  • Beautiful!

  • fulkin' fantastic!

  • He has song so many times in the BBC studios!!! Each and every one of them are P E R F E C T!

  • Late Again ;-) Elton's first elbum is the most emotional (10 songs straight from the heart====> OK I choose little englishman The King must die! + 60 years on + I nead you to...take me to the pilot

valerie so whatever? It's Halloween ;-)

  • I am guessing you must be from the USA, His firt album was Empty Sky but not issued in US until after the Elton John album

  • Wonderful Paul Buckmaster's arranger and Fantastic The captain....and the brown dirty cowboy Bernie.

  • Bernie Taupin's lyrics really put you in the shoes of a wee one's wonder at what's happening...it oozes love!"Peering out of tiny eyes, the grubby hands that gripped the rail.'a strange new sound you've never heard before , a strange new sound that makes boys explore.' 'Tread neat so small those little feet. Amid the morning his small heart beats'...what a beautiful arrangement.this music awakened me.Elton hardly ever performs this. Got hooked around the time of this vid.

  • Yes! You are exactly right!...Bernie did an excellent job with these lyrics...and Elton did a wonderful job of matching the lyrics with a gorgeous, and fitting melody!

  • I purchased Elton John (the album)in 1970 after hearing "Your Song" on the radio. While I still think that "Your Song" is a good, I was totally blown away by this song. I replayed the second side of the album so frequently it was almost worn out. It became totally worn out when our son was born in 1980. Like many of the postings for this song, a tear comes to my eye, every time I hear it.

  • wow ... Paul Buckmaster on cello , very cool

  • Cool seeing them as kids!

  • I am totally impressed. This is one of my favourite songs - and this version is really amazing!

  • PERFECT ! I LOVE ELTON !

  • Would you look at Bernie? What is he in this vid, all of 19, 20? To write such gorgeous lyrics at such a young age...pure magic. God bless Elton and Bernie.

  • Shame that the intro was a bit crazy beacause the harpist was speeding up the tempo too much, but they really got it together towards the end.

  • Great song. I remember playing this song for my nephew when his younger brother was born. He was about 2 at the time. Now they're both teens....

  • Such a sweet, simple, pure & beautiful song! Elton must have come out of the womb, performing. So young, so talented! I have this actual recording, & was surprised to hear a younger version of Grey Seal, which was on the 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' album, and quickly became a favorite to many! Rod Stewart sings 'Every Picture Tells A Story'. Elton sings songs that create pictures. He has such a wide spectrum of songs, something for every mood. Rock on, Elton!

  • this song always brings a tear to my eyes, it reminds me of both my sons who are now grown up, but I still remember them as children with this song. It is a beautifully written and composed song and probably their best collaboration. It stands the test of time this song. they are both geniuses.

  • I've just posted a comment acknowledging Paul Buckmaster on rockermad's posting of Sixty Years On and here we see him not just conducting but playing cello solo as well. The man is a genius in his own right. Does anyone know what became of him? I think he ended his work with Elton after Blue Moves.

  • -I believe Paul Buckmaster conducted and arranged the strings/orchestra for a beautiful song called "Ballad of the Boy in the Red Shoes" from EJ's album, Songs from the West Coast (2001). It's a lovely song- I would suggest listening to it if you haven't already-I think there's a live performance of it on YT...

  • Maybe the best lyrics Bernie ever wrote...other than First Episode At Hienton IMO.

    5 stars!

BTW has Elton ever performed First Episode At Hienton live??? I must see it!

  • Absolutely, Tauphin at his best.

  • NICE ONE BENNY

  • who?

  • thanks bernie

  • I have two younger brothers who have been a great support and inspiration throughout my life. For them I'll be always thankful. Thank you Bernie and Elton.

  • memorabile..........elton. grazie

  • Cough 1967

On a tour of one-night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand.

And every stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one-man band.

  • Perplexed 2008

    Huh?

  • What a great production and a beautiful clip! John aspired to greatness and he composed dramatic statements from melodies whose organic logic seemed only slightly more apparent with each rehearing. This was pop music at the highest level of craftsmanship. Word and tune wed here to create a lovely moment.

  • really.........is there a more lyrical and beautifully sung song???

  • class never goes out of style. hope the younger generation listens to these songs and learn how they are crafted. thank you bernie and elton for uplifting our lives with your music. thank you so much....

  • well i don't know if i count as younger generation, i'm 20, but i've been a fan of elton since i was 7 years old when i spun my mom's elton john's greatest hits record at my grandmother's house

  • When i hear it, I began to cry. Because I probably will not have any child. And it makes me cry. Birth of a child must be really beautiful moment.

And Elton, you have beautiful voice. Thank you for that you are in the world. I love you.

  • The best song ever written by such a young, inspired writer (Bernie)at the time. Any music written like this today? No way. 17 year olds just text or listen to rap with NO feeling in their souls. Thank you both Bernie and Elton. Another one like it soon would be widely accepted...please give it some thought if you read this.

  • I love this song, gorgeous lyrics. Amazing, sends shivers up my spine. I'm 13 and have a 7 year old brother and when I get mad at him, I listen to this song and it makes the anger go away.

  • Pobre Elton, se nota que no tenía asesor de imagen, y si lo tenía, era su peor enemigo. Anyway, la canción es HERMOSA y él toca el piano y canta INCREIBLE.

  • Without a doubt, these are the most beautiful Taupin lyrics I have every heard. There are so many hidden jems in Elton's early works that should have been hits. The Greatest Discovery is one of them! Thank you for posting it! Lets continue to post more of Elton's hidden jems.

  • TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!

  • very very beautiful

  • Elton at his finest

  • I love this song...I have 2 younger brothers, and I can remember feeling the same way....

  • the lyrics are just so beautiful! this was an amazing album.

  • This song is so beautiful. I have to smile everytime I hear it.

  • even back then- what a talent!

  • This is the first time I hear this song, and I'm already in love with it. Thank you for posting!! ♥

  • So sweet. Thank you for posting.

  • This performance is amazing.

  • esp. 00:47!

  • This is one of my favorite songs. Thank you for posting!

  • this is a beautiful song! Its about Bernies youngest brother, Kit. in my opinion sounds better when its just Elton and the piano and when performed now, with Eltons lower vocal range.
