This is the "other" non - commercial Elton John that 99.9% of the general public has no idea exists. Just by clicking on this song, you are officially either a Elton elite fan, or smarter than the rabble - or both.
My dad showed me this song a few weeks ago and since then I haven't been able to listen to it without crying. I lost my older brother a couple years ago and every time I think of him I listen to it...Thank you for making such good music, you have no idea how much this song means to both my dad and I.
This is so good, I have an older and younger boy, and a just so great older girl, I wish I would have been able to have here heard this back then...I love you girl...
This song... I sang it over and over again, every night, to my son when I was pregnant with my second child. I just had to change the word 'brother' to 'sister'!!! I still cry when I hear EJ singing it...
Inspiration is that which flows as you begin when you have no idea about the ending. If every artist had waited until the whole picture was seen in the Masterpiece, not a sound would be heard today. No framed art would exist. Not one poem, or book, or quotation would have been penned.
The way to greatness is to move, use, execute, attempt, waste and fail.
This has always been one of my fav EJ and Taupin songs. The seamless blend of lyric and music is absolutely beautiful. This is a great version of the song however I still believe the best version is from EJ's Austrailia show w/the Philharmonic back in '87. The orchestra backing EJ during this song is amazing and his voice is brilliant. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!!
thank you so much elton and bernie i heard this song on the radio the othher day ive never cryed so much over your songs as i have to this ive been looking for a song for my little boy and now ive found it, i now have a song for all my kids and there all yours ive been a big fan off yours since i was 12 i got bulled a lot at school when i came home at night i would listen to all your songs and evey thing would be all right agane thank you so much for sharing your music love 1 big fan xx
@anibalnikov47 No, Bernie and Elton wre never boyfriends. When they were put together to write songs at fairly young ages (Bernie wrote lyrics, Elton wrote music) they clicked as friends as they were both shy, loved muisc, collected vinyl recoreds, and more...Bernie even lived with Elton and Elton's Mom. They feel like brothers as opposed to friends. Bernie is heterosexual and altways has been, But, non-romantically, Bernie and Elton do make beautiful music together :)
@anibalnikov Are you fucking 10 years old? That would explain your reply to my comment. And what the hell does your reply "Gay" even mean? I'm not homosexual and my original comment does not lead you to believe that I was in a happy mood (happy & gay), so please explain it to me. You have no fucking idea what meaning this song has for me and why it would make me cry. I'm thankful that I can listen to a piece of music and actually "Feel" something and say so, instead of insulting someone
I think that Paul played this solo live this one time only. I know him personally but I've never thought to ask him about it! He is a humble and brilliant man.
Elton John was incredibly good for his first three albums and I still love all those songs. More than likely Bernie's influence. They should team up again. After Bernie, Elton is just another pop star.
@ianbeddows Ummm.... Elton hasn't stopped writing with Bernie in over 40 years-- check out his last four albums-- both Elton and Bernie in top form. Where'd you get the idea they stopped working together???
Given the enormous mountain of useless saccharin pop shlock that Elton's produced over the past 30 years, it's easy to forget what an absolute giant he was during that period from about 1970 to 1972, when he flirted very briefly with actual rock music and in the process produced some of the greatest songs of the decade. This video shows just what a phenomenal force he really was in those early days...and he was only 23 years old when this was recorded!
where can I get this bbc session???? :( it's just amazing.... I would like to know the name of the album.... it would be nice if you can help me.... :) thank you.
@carosupersonic - It was on his first (I think) Album just called "Elton John". Had a black cover with just a pic of Elton's face on it and is now out on CD at Amazon - I still have my vinyl!
If you like The Greatest Discovery you'll probably like I Need You To Turn To as well on this album. Another one of their amazing love songs.
In 1972, I asked my very smart sister what the most beautiful song in all the world was. She wrote down this title on the top of her list. I told you she was smart.
I can't beleive his voice was better here than in 2010. Okay, maybe not better, just so very different. Who would have though that this would be some of his best work ever even after all these years. I saw EJ perform this live with the orchestra in 1987 and I just felt the most immense honor at being in the presence of pure genius.
The Greatest Discovery from the 1970 Elton John album and is one of Bernies most beautiful lyrics. This song was played at my son's baptism in 1982. Just beautiful! Thanks for posting!
i think this version is a bit better than the studio version. the horns in the end are louder than on the album. i really like that. it makes it a bit more dramatic.
My mom had this album and played this song for me and my brothers when I was ten. I honestly can't think of any other album that was so complete with unique and original tracks. Seriously... could be a masterpiece.
I bought this album with this wonderful song and and when my son was nearly 5 years old I took his hand, with 'The Greatest Discovery' playing in the backround, and we walked over to the carry cot where his little brother Lee was lying and made a promise then. That I would build a bond between them that no one, not even me, would ever be able to break.
It was the only thing I ever did that was a success.

Bernie Taupin's lyrics really put you in the shoes of a wee one's wonder at what's happening...it oozes love!"Peering out of tiny eyes, the grubby hands that gripped the rail.'a strange new sound you've never heard before , a strange new sound that makes boys explore.' 'Tread neat so small those little feet. Amid the morning his small heart beats'...what a beautiful arrangement.this music awakened me.Elton hardly ever performs this. Got hooked around the time of this vid.
Yes! You are exactly right!...Bernie did an excellent job with these lyrics...and Elton did a wonderful job of matching the lyrics with a gorgeous, and fitting melody!
I purchased Elton John (the album)in 1970 after hearing "Your Song" on the radio. While I still think that "Your Song" is a good, I was totally blown away by this song. I replayed the second side of the album so frequently it was almost worn out. It became totally worn out when our son was born in 1980. Like many of the postings for this song, a tear comes to my eye, every time I hear it.
Would you look at Bernie? What is he in this vid, all of 19, 20? To write such gorgeous lyrics at such a young age...pure magic. God bless Elton and Bernie.
Such a sweet, simple, pure & beautiful song! Elton must have come out of the womb, performing. So young, so talented! I have this actual recording, & was surprised to hear a younger version of Grey Seal, which was on the 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' album, and quickly became a favorite to many! Rod Stewart sings 'Every Picture Tells A Story'. Elton sings songs that create pictures. He has such a wide spectrum of songs, something for every mood. Rock on, Elton!
this song always brings a tear to my eyes, it reminds me of both my sons who are now grown up, but I still remember them as children with this song. It is a beautifully written and composed song and probably their best collaboration. It stands the test of time this song. they are both geniuses.
I've just posted a comment acknowledging Paul Buckmaster on rockermad's posting of Sixty Years On and here we see him not just conducting but playing cello solo as well. The man is a genius in his own right. Does anyone know what became of him? I think he ended his work with Elton after Blue Moves.
-I believe Paul Buckmaster conducted and arranged the strings/orchestra for a beautiful song called "Ballad of the Boy in the Red Shoes" from EJ's album, Songs from the West Coast (2001). It's a lovely song- I would suggest listening to it if you haven't already-I think there's a live performance of it on YT...
I have two younger brothers who have been a great support and inspiration throughout my life. For them I'll be always thankful. Thank you Bernie and Elton.
What a great production and a beautiful clip! John aspired to greatness and he composed dramatic statements from melodies whose organic logic seemed only slightly more apparent with each rehearing. This was pop music at the highest level of craftsmanship. Word and tune wed here to create a lovely moment.
class never goes out of style. hope the younger generation listens to these songs and learn how they are crafted. thank you bernie and elton for uplifting our lives with your music. thank you so much....
well i don't know if i count as younger generation, i'm 20, but i've been a fan of elton since i was 7 years old when i spun my mom's elton john's greatest hits record at my grandmother's house
The best song ever written by such a young, inspired writer (Bernie)at the time. Any music written like this today? No way. 17 year olds just text or listen to rap with NO feeling in their souls. Thank you both Bernie and Elton. Another one like it soon would be widely accepted...please give it some thought if you read this.
I love this song, gorgeous lyrics. Amazing, sends shivers up my spine. I'm 13 and have a 7 year old brother and when I get mad at him, I listen to this song and it makes the anger go away.
Without a doubt, these are the most beautiful Taupin lyrics I have every heard. There are so many hidden jems in Elton's early works that should have been hits. The Greatest Discovery is one of them! Thank you for posting it! Lets continue to post more of Elton's hidden jems.
this is a beautiful song! Its about Bernies youngest brother, Kit. in my opinion sounds better when its just Elton and the piano and when performed now, with Eltons lower vocal range.

Maybe the best lyrics Bernie ever wrote...other than First Episode At Hienton IMO.
5 stars!

What a great production and a beautiful clip! John aspired to greatness and he composed dramatic statements from melodies whose organic logic seemed only slightly more apparent with each rehearing. This was pop music at the highest level of craftsmanship. Word and tune wed here to create a lovely moment.

When i hear it, I began to cry. Because I probably will not have any child. And it makes me cry. Birth of a child must be really beautiful moment.
And Elton, you have beautiful voice. Thank you for that you are in the world. I love you.
