I believe the "bird" was a kite and the director snapped the string offscreen to denature the source of this thing that is shadowing the car. Really nice postmodernist touch.

I don't think it was a kite. I saw the wings moving and often they often passed things that would have gotten in the way of the kite. They even passed under a bridge.
