Hey, it's no wonder they sing along. Steely Dan was and will always be a very cerebral band in the music composition and their lyrics. Great songs that all tell a story, even the new stuff.
and he didn't play all of the exact notes exactly the same the whole time either... it's just a cover and interpretation of the original, not an attempt at a carbon copy.
Joe has covered some great songs over the years. I particularly love his version of the Crowded House song "I feel possessed" And he does a excellent version of XTC's "Mayor of Simpleton" If anyone has video of either of those , post them please!
Could be San Diego at Humphreys, I heard him play it there and the lame crowd sang along and spoiled it. I don't think that it made Joe very happy either!.
I think Joe is probably one of the very few people Donald Fagan wouldn't mind covering his work......incredible....the blending of two of my all time favorite artists.
That's two Steely Dan songs now, that I've heard Joe cover, the other being King Of The World...Both are excellent. Man, he really sounds GREAT singing Becker/Fagen tunes, a perfect fit. Saw him on the Blaze Of Glory tour several years ago, and his large band he had at the time, reminded me of Steely Dan. They should tour together!
Joe Jackson toured with Todd Rundgren. Chicago has toured with Earth, Wind & Fire. Elton John has toured with Billy Joel, Santana with Bob Dylan, Clapton with Steve Winwood (recently!), etc., etc., etc.....These things happen all the time. Haven't you ever gone to a concert with more than one act???And four hours? Hell, the Dead used to play longer than that themselves!...Of course, I probably wouldn't be able to afford the TICKET PRICE, but that's another story!!!
That's right! I saw Chicago with The Beach Boys in 1975, at what was then called Anaheim Stadium. One of the few stadium concerts I loved, because I got there so early, that I wound up about twenty feet from the stage! And that was the REAL Chicago, with Terry Kath! But, I pointed out the Chi / EWF combo because it was more recent...to show it can still be done.
i remember listening to SD { in college I had a roommate who sang "My Old School" like it was her old song as she went undergrad to William and Mary.... ,JJ and FZ"s "St. Alphonzo's Pancake breakfast".....all the time
@evelynmh Hi!! FZ st alfonzo!! holy crap-- i am 43 and i listened to overnight and apostrophe like gospel in my youth -- by the way i dont steal the margerine cuz i no likes it!
I would LVOE to hear Joe cover a whole bunch more Steely Dan material.

@egyptianminor True, JJ's intro chords aren't quite right. Still, a nice cover - I think his voice suits the lyrics and melody well.

For all his bows to SD, I've never heard Fagen say a word about Jackson.

perhaps Fagen has the same attitude that JJackson has about other people performing his material..it's a compliment and that's about it.....

....now if someone can find a video of his take on 'King of the World'...!!!!!
