  • I would LVOE to hear Joe cover a whole bunch more Steely Dan material.

  • Big Joe

  • Great tribute

  • Beautiful Joe!

  • Never knew he did this song...would be cool if he opened for SD. Very compatible styles.

  • I ALWAYS THOUGHT GENERALS AND MAJORS BY XTC WAS JOE

  • @oiyabastard there's time enough hopefully to get these...sacred things right ;)

  • Hey, it's no wonder they sing along. Steely Dan was and will always be a very cerebral band in the music composition and their lyrics. Great songs that all tell a story, even the new stuff.

  • the dan, the joe, the shit!!!love it

  • I don't see one..think they both rock!!!

  • Decent! I like it alot!

  • Hate to say this, but he played the intro w/ a different 'slash/chord'

  • @egyptianminor True, JJ's intro chords aren't quite right. Still, a nice cover - I think his voice suits the lyrics and melody well.

  • @egyptianminor

and he didn't play all of the exact notes exactly the same the whole time either... it's just a cover and interpretation of the original, not an attempt at a carbon copy.

  • King of the World, another Steely Dan tune, is covered by Joe also. It is now on youtube. Check it out!

  • yay jj!

  • Wow! I love Joe Jackson, and I love Steely Dan. This is great!

  • Joe has covered some great songs over the years. I particularly love his version of the Crowded House song "I feel possessed" And he does a excellent version of XTC's "Mayor of Simpleton" If anyone has video of either of those , post them please!

  • Joe Jackson counts the Dan as an influence.

  • If I was at a JJ concert and he played this, I'd s**t a golden brick.

  • @AnoziraNoscut Agreed

  • No shit! I've never put Dan and JJ together, but if you like one, how could you not like the other. Very compatible.

  • Nice version... You did the business Joe Jackson...

  • Right on. I've never heard this before. I wonder if him or those other guys will be going by Denver someday. Fantastic voice.

  • Right on. I've never heard this before. I wonder if him or those other guys will be going by Denver someday.

  • You are so right mjcald..certain The Dan would approve.

  • Could be San Diego at Humphreys, I heard him play it there and the lame crowd sang along and spoiled it. I don't think that it made Joe very happy either!.

  • Very good cover..where was this at?

  • Joe Jackson can cover me, I mean do a cover for me any day of the week. Way to go Joe, you still sound as though you are nineteen.

    Paneeks/Boston

  • if your going to cover a song spice it up a little, tone it down, tear it apart, whatever, dont just repeat it verbatim, hell i can do that

  • @philip1967ful or not, i wish i could

  • @johndspike check out "wilco any major dude" here on you yube, good cover of a great tune,,,,

  • @philip1967ful As much as I love Joe, I have to agree with you.

  • very cool, thanks for posting

  • Fucking sweet . . .

  • I think Joe is probably one of the very few people Donald Fagan wouldn't mind covering his work......incredible....the blending of two of my all time favorite artists.

  • You´r rigth goodgigsvids. Thi is a very good cover. There is a lot of dan on the song but a a lot of joe´s personality. Good job.

  • I bet Fagen prefer's Joe's version to his own (except for the gaffe at 1:18 LOL).

Two of my favorite songwriters/singers since I was a kid.

  • jOE IS KING OF COOL

  • Yeah, I'm gonna look for his CD's.I like the case, music together and artist recieving royalties !

  • and he plays a mean piano too !

  • Timeless music..:-)

  • I love Joe Jackson and Steely Dan. I never thought they'd converge, very nice!!

  • Really? Buy Summer in the City. He covers "King of the World"

  • That's two Steely Dan songs now, that I've heard Joe cover, the other being King Of The World...Both are excellent. Man, he really sounds GREAT singing Becker/Fagen tunes, a perfect fit. Saw him on the Blaze Of Glory tour several years ago, and his large band he had at the time, reminded me of Steely Dan. They should tour together!

  • And then how long would the show be,

4 hours? Nice thought, but unrealistic.

  • Joe Jackson toured with Todd Rundgren. Chicago has toured with Earth, Wind & Fire. Elton John has toured with Billy Joel, Santana with Bob Dylan, Clapton with Steve Winwood (recently!), etc., etc., etc.....These things happen all the time. Haven't you ever gone to a concert with more than one act???And four hours? Hell, the Dead used to play longer than that themselves!...Of course, I probably wouldn't be able to afford the TICKET PRICE, but that's another story!!!

  • Chicago has toured with several other groups including the Doobie Brothers, Hall & Oats, the Beach Boys, America, and Huey Lewis & The News.

  • That's right! I saw Chicago with The Beach Boys in 1975, at what was then called Anaheim Stadium. One of the few stadium concerts I loved, because I got there so early, that I wound up about twenty feet from the stage! And that was the REAL Chicago, with Terry Kath! But, I pointed out the Chi / EWF combo because it was more recent...to show it can still be done.

  • @maysno24 In addition to the two covers that you mention, in 2006 at a show in Washington, DC I heard him perform Steely Dan's Rose Darling.

  • Great talent, Joe Jackson. He does this song proudly, and I'm sure The Dan would approve.

  • Approve or disapprove, royalties sir!

  • Excellent!!

  • i just posted ditto to the girl below, but just below that saw zappa's name thrown out and im a big time Zappa fan also.

  • Ditto!

  • Another Steeley fan here!

  • Great voice for this tune.

  • I agree that Joe Jackson fans are usually Steely Dan fans. And I have found that fans of both usually appreciate a little Zappa too.....

  • And don't forget Todd Rundgren. Plenty of overlap there, too.

  • i remember listening to SD { in college I had a roommate who sang "My Old School" like it was her old song as she went undergrad to William and Mary.... ,JJ and FZ"s "St. Alphonzo's Pancake breakfast".....all the time

  • @evelynmh Hi!! FZ st alfonzo!! holy crap-- i am 43 and i listened to overnight and apostrophe like gospel in my youth -- by the way i dont steal the margerine cuz i no likes it!

  • @NameNotaNumber

You took the words right out of my mouth.

  • I could always hear a little of Steely Dan in some of Jackson's music. I guess this confirms he's a fan!

  • i never thought about it befoe but yeah. JJ is a SD clone! this is just such a good song..i prefer nigth by night though

  • Yeah Night By Night is an amazing track....had that guitar solo in my head for over 20 years! And that horn arrangement....

  • Awsome song! It's the first time listening to Joe's cover of Steely Dan's song. Thanks for sharing this one!

  • Wow. Joe Jackson. Very underrated. One of music's best kept artists.

  • GREAT cover!! Love it!!

  • a very nice suprise

  • amo questo uomo dal 1981....... grande

  • yes.. totally agree... he even says it in his book that steely was a big influence

  • Never knew that JJ was a Dan fan. Awesome to find that out since I've been a seething fan of both for 20 years.

  • Hear, hear!! And it's a true statement above where folks mentioned that a lot of Joe Fans are also Dan Fans (like me) (;

    THANKS for posting this!!

  • Of all his covers, this is my favorite. Great to see you in NYC two weeks ago - can't wait to see you again, JJ!

  • Of all of the covers I've heard him do, this is the best! Thanks JJ, loved you in NYC two weeks ago!

  • the best Joe Jackson Steely Dan tune: King of the World

  • Yes - that was an unexpected surprise on the "Summer in the City" album. Absolutely agreed.

  • For all his bows to SD, I've never heard Fagen say a word about Jackson.

  • perhaps Fagen has the same attitude that JJackson has about other people performing his material..it's a compliment and that's about it.....

  • There is so much over-hyped, banal, corporate mediocrity out there. it really gladdens the soul to see/hear this.

....now if someone can find a video of his take on 'King of the World'...!!!!!

  • The funniest part of this video is the crowd singing along. Shows how blurry the line between Steely Dan and Joe Jackson fan is.

  • @MrLapage Totally. Never thought of it like that.

  • If Joe had cut this song back in the day...it would have been a top 5 hit! His vocal quality is incredible...let alone his piano playing.

  • Yes, what everyone else said

  • Great memories go along with this song.

  • Cool! Two of my favorites. Steely Dan and Joe Jackson should tour together. I'd love to see Jackson and Fagen get together for a tune.

  • that would be a great show!!!

  • That is AWESOME. I love both artists. What a perfect mix.

  • Hell ya steely love, one of the best!!!

  • Oh yeah! Lovin' that tasty take. It's a Steely Dan song: "Any Major Dude". Thanks for posting this nugget!

  • Love ya music Joe! Can't wait to see you in new york in april!

  • Rockin!! What a perfect song for his voice and dark sense of humour. Two great artists united...

  • Hi Gen. Love you.
