Being an ex MG-3 gunner, I´d take that one over the GPMG any day of the week. It´s lighter, higher rate of fire, and a sound that´ll scare the shit out of anybody on the receiving end. (Just ask any allied veterans from ww2) ..

Awsome piece of kit fired it many times and eventually got use to lugging it around although it lay heavy at the best of times but when you needed firepower it was the piece to have for any section and as long as you kept it clean stoppages was very few

The MG42 may have some flaws, the barrel needs replacing every 250 rounds, but overall, it is probably the most celebrated and effective machine gun used in combat. The psychological damage it causes is another reason its so effective. Of course, Mcnab would say that the British army's machine gun's are the best. But the 'best MG on the planet', far from the truth.
GPMG IS NOT A SPECIFIC WEAPON, it is a weapon TYPE, and that one looks surprisingly enough like a Belgian FN MAG, but without the buttstock.. the FN MAG is the best GPMG in the world however.. i love how this video explains absolutely nothing about the weapon itself.

As a former member of the GPMG SF platoon, i fully agree with 'Andy' who i have met on a couple of occasions.... The GPMG is a versatile weapon and when used in the SF role with the C2 sight, can achieve a range upto 1800m when map predicted fired, thus hitting targets that cannot be seen by line of sight, by firing over objects.

@bibblebob MG3 is a great gun. But it is also being phased out by the German army next year.
As for the GPMG is it solid, reliable, easy to use, has a track record dating back to the 1950s and is well liked by the people who use it. In addition it is used by the Sas and the way I see it if there was a better machine-gun they would be using it today given they would be able to use just about any weapon that gets the job done.
The MG3 has a track record dating back to 1942 and is a very simple, reliable and easy to operate piece of equipment. There exist very few militaries who have the "best" equipment possible, because it comes down which deal with which arms manufacturer can earn a politician the most money. The GPMG might be a great weapon, but at the end of the day as I said before, there do exist better.
I once had officer check mine at the end of an excercise. No round in the chamber, but one had gone through the slide. The officer opened the lid, nothing in there, cocked it, and, with the muzzle pointing at another officer, not the ground, pulled the trigger. It went off! Lucky for them it was a blank for the excercise.

I have met soldiers from every NATO country during my service time, and everyone said, that the german MG3 is the best machinegun they've ever fired. accurate, high ROF, barrel change within 3 seconds and reliable as hell. And those guys fired a lot of different machineguns.

Great weapon, I've used it many times in the Canadian forces. Just one problem, Live rounds are fine, it just doesnt like blank rounds. They tend to give it the "bolt action" effect. But for everyone else, best way to fix this is have the gas regulator on highest and put a coin in the BFA, causes more carbon but makes 'er work better.

With the SUSAT sight, I was able to consistently hit the centre of my target, even using the new short-barreled carbine version - and I am no great marksman. That was a GPMG (Aka MiniMi or sometimes called "Jimpy" The american eqivilant is the SAW, the SA-80 is the British Army standard assualt rifle, The LSW is pretty much identical, apart from it has a outrigger, a longer barrell (just) and a bipod, but pretty much has the same capabilities.
@scottjameswilson1987 The "Gimpy" is not the FN Minimi. The "Gimpy" is the L7A1/A2 General Purpose Machine Gun. The FN minimi is a different animal, and fires the NATO 5.56mm as opposed to the 7.62mm round the GPMG fires.

Great weapon, I've used it many times in the Canadian forces. Just one problem, Live rounds are fine, it just doesnt like blank rounds. They tend to give it the "bolt action" effect. But for everyone else, best way to fix this is have the gas regulator on highest and put a coin in the BFA, causes more carbon but makes 'er work better.

@mikefenton24 steady on... u u guys are extremely weel trained... but that doesnt mean other armies arent... we Australians lay out 9 months of training just for our lowest rank troops... there is even more training for specialist roles... and our SASR have been complimented highly by ur SAS so much so that Australian AND British SAS are the same rank when it comes to their rating of performance on the worlds best....

Right..for all the B*** S****ers out there...... who have either never fired an SA-80 or certainly not the latest variants, the current issue of the weapon is a cracking piece of kit. With the SUSAT sight, I was able to consistently hit the centre of my target, even using the new short-barreled carbine version - and I am no great marksman. As for the right-shoulder only crap, I am left-handed and had no problems at all. Preferred it to the C8 SFW

@trenchofstench Haven't they fitted the L85 A2 with an ACOG, RIS handuard and foregrip now? Becuase that's what my brother is using at the momment with his tour in Afghanistan, he says that it's ugly as fuck but great.

Patsfanczar, you dont have a clue what you are on about. That was a GPMG (Aka MiniMi or sometimes called "Jimpy" The american eqivilant is the SAW, the SA-80 is the British Army standard assualt rifle, The LSW is pretty much identical, apart from it has a outrigger, a longer barrell (just) and a bipod, but pretty much has the same capabilities.

@scottjameswilson1987 The "Gimpy" is not the FN Minimi. The "Gimpy" is the L7A1/A2 General Purpose Machine Gun. The FN minimi is a different animal, and fires the NATO 5.56mm as opposed to the 7.62mm round the GPMG fires.

the gmpg is a 7.62mm monster
the minime/m429 saw/lmg (same just different names) is a 5.56mm smaller monster

@scottjameswilson1987 GPMG is NEVER called the Minimi, thats the LMG. The yank evivilent used to be the M60 although i think they have a americanised version of the FN MAG now,
