My favorite section on the BASS line is between 0:40-0:44 (whatever the ACTUAL NOTES on the song are) and between 1:04-1:08.
Anywhere else in this song where that section of the verse comes in is just so cool. It's not a simple 3 note phrase like at certain other parts of the song. In these sections the bass player let's his fingers do some serious walking.
Just like the rhythm in the drums just before the guitar solo in "I got the news".
Great playing Adhbass. The bass line is challenging. Thanks for posting your work as it helps us bass players who are lstill leaning these great bass songs. Keep up the good work and God bless you.
hey can u do a review of this bass i wanna know more about it before i buy it... im kinda interest in that tone switch it has! i play doom metal with a pick and would like to know if ud recommend this bass! thanks man and this rocks!
well played, sir. making me miss my electrics i abandoned years ago to just play upright... but a groove like this needs exactly what you're putting down!
Nice, disciplined subtle staccato progression! This is something acheivable for the rest of us, not some "diving board" display from some Guiness wanabee. Thanks a lot!
Please see the Steely Dan commentary by Chuck Rainey to see how this came to be - he sneaked the choruses in behind a partition!
@bbloodworth Belgiumese isn't a language! :) we speak flemish here in Flanders(known from Flanders Fields, WWI), it's almost the same language as dutch. But yacht stays the same, but it's pronounced differently..
I'm not that big of an Ibanez fan either! but I tried one the other day, and man! I was blown away by the verity of tone you can get from the triple humbucker pick up!
Absolutely inspiring! I just called "Bass Player" to see if I can order a back issue. Been playing for two years...are there any good exercises to help improve fingering precision? I practice 5 days a week and I am stuck in a rut!
I'm sorry I took so long to reply.... what do you feel is your problem, the left or right hand... or both.... Like me !!! Ihave the craziest hands... I play the upright bass with really high action, and the electric with really low action. The ring finger of the left hand is not used too often on the upright... so I tend to do that on the electric too.... my right hand, I dont even want to get into THAT ! Maybe by now it's to late, but if you have some issues, let me know and I'll try my best
i agree great work!, (i foung youre change to slap fine, the difference is negligible really, plus trying to duplicate chucks sound exactly, is damn near impossible.)
Better than most. Again, the change from fingers to slap is not supposed to be abrupt -Chuck was alternating with is thumb even on the verse in spots. -it's one of the most difficult bass parts in pop music, but to play it live with a drunner is FAR more difficult. Plus the drum part is probably THE hardest pop drumming in all of pop music.
You're a good player. You don't need to show off to pther people's records. Make your own.
It's not really my style to play other peoples stuff.... but there are a few tunes I did just for fun, and to challenge myself. Chuck has a very personal way of playing, so does Anthony Jackson, and a lot of other guys..... thats what makes it hard to imitate.... but it's fun to try. Maybe one day some one will have a hard time trying to imitate me....lol! Thanks
Usually I dress down guys who post themselves playing to records. It's just as bad as karaoke, and a type of showing off that I despise. But you actually LISTENED to Mr. Rainey and caught pocket. Still, you're too good to post your exercises. Let's see your own stuff or new renditions of old songs. -No more playing to records. PS: See "The Making of Peg". Keep The Faith.
I appreciate your comment. My goal as a bass player is to have good, solid time, a good personal sound and to bring myself to the music... like Chuck and Anthony do !!! But, there is a whole lot to learn from playing other peoples lines, trying to capture their feel, especially from such great masters. My goal is always to learn, why they play what they play...but sometimes it's fun to play exactly what they play... sorry this took so long.... peace
any chance we could bribe you to post a clip of the 2 bar turn-around in slow motion with a close up of the neck? I have been working on this for a couple of weeks, but cant the hammer sequence right. This tune is turning out to be much more difficult than I anticipated!
no need to get discouraged my friend. you just gotta work at it a little bit every day. I've been playing for 18 years and every few years I have to go back to the basics.... I'm going through that now, I'm relearning how to play the electric as well as the upright. every time I go through this I come out the other end a lot better than when I started.
get started today.... and you'll get good sooner !!!
Whoa! Damn brother that's some serious bass guitar playing there! The ATK sounds great. Was thinking about buying one of those myself :-)People like you make me want to practice.
Dear Adhbass, great playing. Using your video to learn the song. Can you post another video with your slapping tech. on the chorus at a slower speed? I think it's your double thumbing tech. that confuses me at real speed. aloha!
In the late 90's I had a 4 string US ATK with that weird tension free neck system. It was transparent red with a white pearloid pickguard. I wish I still had it !!! : (
WOW! dude that was fantastic well done really easy to listen to :-) keep going with the bass well done :-)

I LOVE to watch people playing these> i even watch that guy whop does those slowed down guitar solos!
I'm a musician and appreciate the work that goes into playing these solos. I never think of it as showing off.
I'm also a sucker for Steeley Dan and know every solo EVERY solo! I can't play them, but I know them.

It's pretty weird.
Your left hand is perfect(technical)
But your right is..The slapping is good.
But your fingerstyle is a bit 'cramped' (I'm sorry, but I can't find another word for it) Because here in Belgium we say 'verkrampt'
Grtz!

OTHER peoples ? music ?
I borrow from Bach - melodically, harmonically ALL the damn time.
Is it mine ? hell no, it's no ones.
over 15 years ago I gave up on playing ANYTHING static, I ONLY play in the moment, relying on the wind that blows me around like a leaf.
Let the folks who want to celebrate mantra through music do so, nothing wrong with it.
