My favorite section on the BASS line is between 0:40-0:44 (whatever the ACTUAL NOTES on the song are) and between 1:04-1:08.

Anywhere else in this song where that section of the verse comes in is just so cool. It's not a simple 3 note phrase like at certain other parts of the song. In these sections the bass player let's his fingers do some serious walking.

Just like the rhythm in the drums just before the guitar solo in "I got the news".

I'm sorry I took so long to reply.... what do you feel is your problem, the left or right hand... or both.... Like me !!! Ihave the craziest hands... I play the upright bass with really high action, and the electric with really low action. The ring finger of the left hand is not used too often on the upright... so I tend to do that on the electric too.... my right hand, I dont even want to get into THAT ! Maybe by now it's to late, but if you have some issues, let me know and I'll try my best

Better than most. Again, the change from fingers to slap is not supposed to be abrupt -Chuck was alternating with is thumb even on the verse in spots. -it's one of the most difficult bass parts in pop music, but to play it live with a drunner is FAR more difficult. Plus the drum part is probably THE hardest pop drumming in all of pop music.

You're a good player. You don't need to show off to pther people's records. Make your own.

It's not really my style to play other peoples stuff.... but there are a few tunes I did just for fun, and to challenge myself. Chuck has a very personal way of playing, so does Anthony Jackson, and a lot of other guys..... thats what makes it hard to imitate.... but it's fun to try. Maybe one day some one will have a hard time trying to imitate me....lol! Thanks

But, there is a whole lot to learn from playing other peoples lines, trying to capture their feel, especially from such great masters. I'm going through that now, I'm relearning how to play the electric as well as the upright. every time I go through this I come out the other end a lot better than when I started.

In the late 90's I had a 4 string US ATK with that weird tension free neck system. It was transparent red with a white pearloid pickguard. I wish I still had it !!! : (
