  • This guys' an amazing soul. I'm not an appretiative listener of classical music but Derek has an interesting way of making that genre of music entertaining and I could sit and listen to it. He could play a harpiscord and make it sound good. Read the book "In the Key of Genius" to really appreciate the genius of this young man.

  • THAT WAS BACH, HOLY SHIT

  • And I thought that I was good at piano.

Listening to him, I'm like an ant compared to a giant!

  • He's very good!

So if anyone says I want to be just like him or better then him, say "In your dreams!" because he is insanely good at piano!

In fact, he's probably best in the world at piano even in many categories!

If not, he's the best at all categories!

  • he has changed the world of modern music and shown us all creative genius on an unknown level

  • I would give up my eyes and learning abilities to know music the way Derek knows it

  • I thought I was cool cuz I can type without looking

  • dude this guy makes me wanna cry. He has the most greatest talent i've seen in my WHOLE entire life. God has not given him to sight, but an incredible gift.

  • Amazing.......the guy is AUTISTIC !

  • Incredible soul !!!!

I wonder he has taught piano skill some point? or never?

I can see he's not playing based on what's written...but only with his sense...

    Amazing !! many applauses !!

  • such amazing.. but i wont be in his shoes.. he is mentally handicaped and.. blind

but also such a genious.. wonderful how easy he plays every note..

music is his soul.. and he doesnt even know this

  • with everything else going on in this world it matters not disabled or otherwise, he is a gift so appreciate and enjoy, he is.

  • He was born premature at just 27 weeks and the oxygen used to keep him breathing damaged his brain so he suffers from slight autism and it also caused his blindness. He can walk fine, he just needs a guiding hand, and he can talk fine, he just doesn't comprehend some of the things people tell him, and he sometimes has difficulty putting his thoughts into complete sentences.

  • that is a beautiful piece of music and a wonderful, exceptionally talented guy :)

  • he plays the piano at the carol concerts for a special needs school called Wargrave house in Warrington every year and he is always very popular with the kids and the teachers

He comes with an organisation called Music for Autism and he does little concerts aswell where he plays requests fo us....

    a true talent bless him

  • I know that he's a genius musically, but does he have physical disabilities that impair him in technical playing?

  • Depends man, the physical disabilities, could be else where, ,he cant walk properly, he can't really speak that well, like, and when u loose one of those, the body tries to give in to the interest of the person

  • well hes blind

  • @pookiehohn i do believe he is partially blind. but i'm not 100% on that...:)

  • @pookiehohn when is he born

  • LOVED "Ain't Misbehavin'"

  • I didn't even recognize that he was playing Bach at first. Amazing. I wish I could express myself half as well verbally as he can through music. What a creative guy.

  • Comment removed

  • simply touched my heart...

  • i really like his style, he does a lot of those... arpeggis right? im no muscial expert but i think thats what they are called whatever... keep on doing what do you best as long as you enjoy it!

  • Arpeggios is what you are looking for, my friend.

  • They are flourishes really. Not Apeggios.

  • Yea..... I can play like that even beter..

yeah right! JK I only wish I could play like that... only in my wiledest imaginasoin

  • yes but i could almost listen to him play a toy piano and still be impressed, as he's that good.

  • Didn't mean to downrate your comment:( curse my fingers!

  • He sometimes plays the organ at our local church!

  • For such a great player he should be playing a grand and not a crappy electric keyboard.

  • @tjamassey

I agree so much...I hate this sound of this keyboard...

  • my god if only bach could hear this.

could you imagine them playing together?

  • I love the part where he has an itch towards the end. He botched a note then removed his hand from the keys yet continued with the other one. Was it a legitamite itch and it messed him up so he bought time to scratch it? Pretty funny any way you look at it.

    Bravo Derek

  • I have 2 degrees from a music conservertoire, and have studied tradition, jazz, and contemporary music, as well as being an accomplished pianist... So I feel really lucky, because I can understand the true extent of how gifted he is... Not only is he musical in a sense which surpasses most professional musicians. he has such a natural technique and bond with the keyboard/piano. It's an absolute pleasure to listen and watch. Thanks, this video is now in my favourites.

  • Maybe you should go to a special school for SPELLING...

  • careful...your ignorance is showing!

tjevs is using the original correct spellings. The same spellings they still use in the UK.

  • Ignorance? Sweetie, I was replying to TadeuszOlejnik...

    it? Is*

    becouse Because*

    thing Think*

    dodn't Didn't*

    recognice Recognize*

Haha..now, now, don't go letting your ignorance show through again, okay?

  • I too am an aspiring pianist with degrees from a conservatory. But its not that he surpasses MOST professionals my friend, he surpasses ALL. I'm sorry to say but as much as anyone practices in their whole life time they'll never surpass this individual. He hears a song once and can play it perfectly seconds after hearing with perfect technique. I's mysterious the way things work in life, the man can barely count to ten, yet hes been blessed with an extraordinary talent. Kudos to you Derek

  • sonustech, sorry that last comment was actually for you.

  • Hi there!

This was filmed in the RNIB Sounscape. It was the day of the 'Extraordinary People' documentary filming. I just shot this on the side while Derek was having a relaxing time and the camera crew were changing their setup (for the main filming).

    Best wishes,

    Evangelos

  • sonustechm that is awesome! I thought the lighting looked familliar!

And it so good to have non-documentary personal video of Derek on the web!

We are looking forward to the coming Jazz Katz gig soon.

    Katz Blessings,

    Nick

  • I'm not too sure if anyone knows anything about this but I'd thought I'd ask. What is going to happen at the remains of the borstel? I heard a few murmurings a few years back that it was going to be a music college but nothing seems to have come of it?

  • reader28, great to see Dereks prodigy again.

Where was this recorded? When I fimed Derek there was a lot of applause afterwards. Was it made in a studio, or was the sound a direct recording from the PA?

    Music blessings

  • He play very wonderfully!
