  • Shawn, the best video instruction ever. I used this for the first time on the course today and brought my score down from low 90's to 83. 7 Greens in regulation. I am a lefty and when I use this tilt twirl with my driver, I have tendency to go right, almost draw heavy or hook. I tried many adjustments to hit the middle of the fairway with little luck. Always right, am I putting to much weight on my front foot, causing everything to head right? Irons were near perfect.

  • @macaronicaesar1 I think it is more of a set up issue with the driver; have a look at my "Rip the Driver; shawn clement" video as well as my "swing plane update; shawn clement" video; You should come see in our forum for some great advice as well! Shawn

  • hey sean, id like to complement you again on the quality of your teaching btw...but you said the bottom of the swing is between the shoulders (that half circle bone thing) ...ive always thought the bottom of the swing was the tailbone?

  • Shawn, I purchased your videos a couple of months ago & have seen some positive results. I setup with a good tilt and neutral grip, but my right side wants to take over and I come across-the-line, especially when my body gets tired later in the round. What drills can I do to strengten my left side.

  • Shawn you are the best! Your videos have helped me a lot, only problem is that I dont have the time I would like to get your tips incorporated in my swing due to 2 little children. Do you have any advise on which drills or videos that one would benefit the most from?? - for us that only have a limited time to practice?? :o)

  • Shawn, I purchased your DVD a year ago and it has helped me a lot. I have a question about the proper spine tilt. It seems to me that when I do the tilt, my shoulders close to the target. Am I tilting wrong? Sometimes I hit it good with the spine tilt and sometimes not. I don't know if I am tilting too much or the wrong way. Should you lean away from the target to keep the shoulders, hips, feet square to the target or twist first and then bend at the hips? Thanks for all of your help.

  • Shawn, what sony bluetooth equipment are you using?

  • I've been studying this video repeatedly since posting comment last wk. I keep obtaining new insight. Would it be fair to say that one could imagine or attempt to visualize the mid-point of the shoulder axis as the apex of a triangle with the base of the triangle at the hip level and that this triangle is "tilted" but the angle of this tilted triangle is constant at least through impact... BUT that there is an angulated "vertical-like" motion of the triangle which provides the gyration etc.

  • You could! You must have enjoyed Homer Kelly's Golf machine! Shawn

  • @clemshaw It's very easy to get locked into positions with TGM. I prefer your approach where you encourage freeing up the body. Speaking of positions :-), is your right elbow showing underneath the left arm on 4.46 a deliberate lead with the right elbow as in skipping the stone or side-arm throw in baseball? Never played baseball but skipping the stone right arm is throwing while the left seems to pull back. What does your left arm do on your DS or FS? Is it a "pull" or a "push"?

  • @clemshaw In the FS to move the club I can pull (with left) or push (with right). You spoke of bringing both "arm assembly" in front of the chest. Do you achieve this by both arms pushing or left pulling & right pushing? Thanks again for being the best teacher. Tiger should be seeing you instead of wasting his time.

  • @clemshaw Hogan and Moe Norman both display a high finish with the arms, yet their hands are relatively low at the top of their BS. Why is Norman's finish so much higher than anyone else?

  • Your swing is looking more like Annika's.

  • Now I just need the bank account to look like hers too! :)

    Shawn

  • Are u suggesting that the tilt that u start off with does NOT increase on the downswing. If so, how do u reconcile that with other aspects of your swing teaching (which I am a huge fan/proponent of) in which you get that "bump" or "butt backwards" movement in the transition. When I practice this bump it seems that if I stop the swing at impact and look in the mirror that my tilt angle has ? increased and I don't get the stacked finish that u get. I also push shots. Is my tilt angle 2 gr8

  • @vjwmd,

Shawn's finish position is a result of allowing the momentum of the arms to carry everything through to the target. If you try to maintain your tilt excessively past impact, you will be resisting momentum (or hanging back) which is likely the source of your push. Hope that helps!

  • 3:09 check it. dude hits the ball in to the net at the same place so much he wore a hole in it from hitting the wall . dang. guy makes sense while being kinda kookoo about it.

  • Hi Shawn. On the behind swing camera shot, it looks like the shoulders are slighty closed to the target line after you brace the left side.

Is that an optical illusion or a correct position as the brace places to shoulders in that way.

At this time, i find my brace is unfortunatelt opening my shoulders and i dont know how to stop that alignment issue.

Thanx for all the videos, they are a mssive help.

    Garry from UK

  • Hey Garry!

I have a whole slew of videos to help understand this necessity of tilting; they have all the answers you are looking for; see "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" to start; then see "golf pro lesson..." "...proper spine tilt angle", "...braced tilt part 1 and 2" and then "...tilted spiral part 1, 2 and 3"; the light will probably come on in the Braced tilt part 2 but you should watch them all as they all have some solid nuggets to help. All the best! Shawn

  • Love the new camera stuff, especially the slow motion.

    Dan

  • hey to the best golf teacher on the planet by far!! ;-)

i just wanted to know if i have to use this "braced" position with every club. with longer irons and especially fairway woods i am not sure if there has to be more weight on that left side(for righthanders) at set up? god bless you...chris from germany

  • The longer the club, the more centrifugal force will result and the more important the positioning of this brace! 14 clubs-1 golf swing! :) Thank you for the comment and kind words!

    Shawn

  • Shawn,

Your finish is vertically stacked head to toe.

How do you describe the loss of the forward tilt in the downswing - say from impact to the finish?

  • @synckd

For me it feels like the momentum of the arms, after impact, pull the right shoulder and right side around and thus you land in this verticle stacked position.

  • @bluejfk , Agree. And the Hogan power drill as well. Wanted to see how Shawn would describe it.

  • There is so much momentum exploding to the target on the follow through and if the brace is solid against the left side, there is no other place for the momentum to go but up! So the arm-club unit levitates up the chest as it gets pulled away from the body towards the target and the head gets pulled up and lifts the whole spine in the process; if you do not allow this to happen, you will get pulled out onto your toes and will not be able to finish the swing and clear completely....

  • Hi Shawn I already order your DVD like I promise my wife Leticia TReviño bought teh dvd for my bithday today, my brithday is febraury 8th any lesson for me fopr a gift??? jejeje take care my teacher!!!

  • Should I lift up my left foot during the backswing when using the brasied tilit method? (this cause alot of things to go haywire)

  • HI Shawn, how u doing? The question I have is that the toes of my leading foot actually slip slightly towards the target, during the point when reaching my finish position. (especially in driver and wedges) What casued this? I hope the cure can actullay increase my consistency.

  • You have helped my game temendously. Yesterday I hit a par 3 165 m within 2m of the flag and got a easy par, while my brother hit 9 going from bunker to bunker, he he. I have watched many people on youtube about golf in the last few days and your videos have help me by far the most. Thanks. I used your method before I saw your video on a down hill shot where my weight was on my left side and I was amazed how the ball landed soft on the green with a full blooded 5 iron.

  • This video is really good to help understand how to swing. Now my irons shots go straight, in the air and far. It has helped me a lot as with the planting of my left foot in another video. I have noticed in another video you slitely lift your left foot in the air and on this video you do not - yesterday I did not lift my foot and play very well. Is this technique used from the tee as well?

  • If you look at my "golf pro lesson 2008 golf swing review" part 1 and 2; I show the differences; when you keep the feet on the ground, there still should be a transfer of pressure to the left side TO COMPLETE THE BACKSWING WELL BEFORE THE ARMS START BACK DOWN; the planting of the left heel gives this more punch when you are not used to it yet and many of my students just stay this way; like Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones etc...Shawn

  • Shawn, it.s Aldo again bothering you haha I hopw to swing liek you somtimes, my games it getting better thanks to you, I will love to make videos in spanish for latin people who also has talent but first i have to knwo everything you know, and second please tell me how teh snap ot the swing to teh target works, I mean, How the club head taking the ball without taking teh ground under the ball and yes after the ball!! Thanks teacher!!!

  • The video for this is "golf pro lesson taut swing philosophy" and you will see this snap in the first 2 minutes; then go to "golf pro lesson through the ball" for the fishing analogy to the target; and then finish with "golf pro lesson the insanity of golf" and this should complete the package; my DVD will show you step by step in the first 3 chapters; Shawn

  • Hi Shawn. I think I know what you answer is going to be to this question but here goes. I hear a lot of pros like Hank Haney talking about the back of the left wrist being square to the target at impact for accuracy. Obviously this doesnt work with a stronger grip (which you reccomend) So I ask, Does learning to swing with a neutral grip make you a better accuracy player in the long run (like Jack Nicklaus said in "Golf My Way" or is it just old timers keeping to traditions. Hands= clubface

  • It is more than that; first you need to establish the purpose of the grip and how the hands marry the club to the arms; then you need to understand HOW THE WRISTS are designed to work; I have another video called "golf pro lesson bridging flat wrist with hinged wrists"; which I think i will change the title; after you watch it, comment on what would be a good title if you could;

    Thanks, Shawn

  • I knew thats where you would send me and yes that video is the first one of yours I ever watched while trying to figure out this impact thing. If I had to rename it I would call it " the hands/wrists at impact" (thats what I was searching for). Unfortunately I am a control freak looking for that last bit of accuracy to get me close to the pin. I can hit greens, but Im looking to do it in putting range accuracy.

  • . I feel I need to find a key impact thought to ensure my clubface is aiming at the target at impact. Letting go and giving the club to a variable force seems too inaccurate to get me in putting range every time. I have been experimenting with imagining that I am slapping the ball with my trailing hand and it works fantastic for woods but I find that when I do it with irons, weird things start to happen. It especially puts a lot of force on the right wrist when the club takes its divot.

  • hey shawn,

how much weight should be on the left side at set-up?

with that braced tilt it feels like there is more weight on the left. is that right? left: 60 % right:40%

    ??

    thanks chris from germany

  • Yes; exactly! Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Mike Souchak and many others from that era used this and played their whole careers like this;

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

I am having some trouble getting the stack position. When I set up that way it feels as if I am having quite a bit more weight on my left side, as well as setting up somewhat closed with my hips.

    Am I doing something wrong?

    Many thanks, Jette

  • Hello Jette;

You are not doing anything wrong; the address position is a snapshot in time, a millisecond where the arms are already in the process of swinging freely into the backswing and the body is already in the process of getting out of the way; see "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" and "Golf pro lesson timing and tempo update"...Shawn

  • SHAWN!I I belive that the best video you have is all about Tilted Spiral, because i start practicing of course feelling a very smooth backswing wiht the tilt even I didn´t have to worry about hit the ball first then teh ground it's happen all itself, just having this tilt all the way backswing and downsing, I feel a smooth swing and teh ball GO SO FAR, I look you, joke, hehe , what do you hace to say about tha!? ehehe take my mentor, techaer, I hope to have a lesson in person with you!

  • Thank you aldojoel1981! We are waiting for you! :)

    Shawn

  • Love the new camera Shawn. Maintaining the tilt at the correct angle has made a huge difference to my ball striking & I understand completely the effect of too much or too little. Great stuff as always. Barry(U.K.)

  • The new video format looks fantastic and the instruction is, as usual, pure genius!

  • hmm i believe u got extra weight, compare to previous year videos. :)

  • I guess I will stop making videos and start exercising instead! :) Actually I have started swimming again so you should see the trend reverse itself this year;

    Shawn

  • @clemshaw Shawn, I recomend you p90x itçs teh best thing fow workouts!!! and please never stop make videos, because fat or thin we need you here!!! you're the best!!!

  • @clemshaw

see,.. everybody needs you. about bodyweight..i am now 43 this year. the swing improves tremendously, even the increasingly front stomach dont bother me much since now do swing the club athletically. hmm,.. i wonder how john daly will be with his new shape now.

  • Yet another great video! thanks Shawn

  • HI Shawn me again! What casue my topping...My topping are shot where my toe club hit slightly above top and compress the ball against the ground causing a divot like like 5 inch long...Can you give me the reasons so that I can eliminate them 1 by 1...a immediate solution is also welcomed of cos,,...

  • Have you seen my video "Golf Pro lesson stop topping and take better divots"?

    Shawn

  • Hi shawn! Thank for your reply...Still working hard on it... I feel through numerous swings, the reason for my eyes not able to look at one point (like behind the ball) during my downswing, I will feel that if I keep on looking at the ball I am going to hurt myself especially at the neck... y do i get this feeling? anything wrong with my swing?

  • See "golf pro lesson the insanity of golf" Focus on a nice rhythmic swing to a target and on the way, feel that the sole of the club is going to skip across the ground; the eyes are on the ball or a spot in the grass just inside the ball but is DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU ARE FOCUSED ON THAT SPOT; BUT ARE AWARE THAT THE SPOT IS IN THE WAY OF YOU SWINGING TO THE TARGET! Shawn

  • Thanks for the further explanation of the tilt Shawn. I like the new camera editing as well... very helpful from different angles as sometimes I do wonder 'oh but what does that look like from the back or front!'

    Cheers

  • "radius of gyration"...I like it!

  • Any simple drills I can do in my office or in the bed room at home to improve my golf swing ?

  • Sure!

"golf pro lesson feet together drill", "golf pro lesson one leg swing no weightshift", "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill' which you will combine with the 2 first drills. THEN combine the perpetual motion drill with the proper timing of a feet apart swing from the 2 following videos" Golf Pro lesson downswing weightshift" and "golf pro lesson 2008 golf swing review part 2"; Enjoy! Shawn

  • Hey this one is great, as I figured I was over doing the tilt a little. Great Shawn!!!

  • Thanks again Shawn for the new batch of videos recently. Your videography continues to improve also, even though it has always been good.

  • Great...Love the two angles..

  • hi Shawn, thank you and Matt for the instructions... YOUR CONFIRMATION IS REQUIRED! Now regarding the take away, in feet together video, 1) I saw ure hips stop moving at a point then ure hands start to hingh and levitate up...But in all ure slow motion video, the hands moving with the hips till wrist hingh at about shoulder level then your hips stop turning.. Which is the correct one?? when try to do the first scenerio, my chest opens up, overswing or lost foward tilt angle.. please help.....

  • Easy; what you need to do is perfect your "perpetual motion drill" and BE AWARE of when it happens for you!! Never Never attempt to manipulate yourself into positions you PERCEIVE are correct; DO THE PERPETUAL MOTION DRILL with feet together and then with one leg and see the difference the range of motion does in each one to the timing of what you are asking THROUGH AWARENESS; give the motion to rhythm and gravity and then OBSERVE WHAT HAPPENS; Have fun! Shawn

  • Shawn - the move to 2 cameras is great! I'm sure it takes longer to edit so thanks for the additional effort you're putting in. You've always got me thinking and learning. . thanks!

  • love your enthusiasm shawn. thanks again.

  • Great vid as usual. Now I have a problem that in the follow trough it seams that my hands collapse and let the club go. The image I hav is that in the three o clock in the swing the club and my arms should be in line but now my arm is in three o clock and club maybe at one. Hope you understand me hard to explain :) Do you have a drill for this? I did not find one in your vids and I seen them all I think.

  • This issue is the same as the chicken wing; there is something getting in the way of your arm swing to the target and the letting go of the grip is a protection measure that the instincts do to prevent wrist or rotator cuff injuries (left wrist or right rotator cuff for the right handed player); so see "golf pro lesson golf injuries" and "Golf Pro lesson the insanity of golf" to make sure you are emphatically focused on the target! :) Shawn
