maybe I am in the minority here, but the vocals were a bit much for me. A little too much screaming IMO, but overall great version. I almost want a hybrid acoustic that grows into rock version of this song.
@gheffty93 "I almost want a hybrid acoustic that grows into rock" -- Unless someone can correct me, I'm 99% sure that, that's how this version went. I'm sure the first half was sang as the orginal version, then they broke into this for the second half (or done B2B version). Certain that's how it went, I can remember the show and that sticks in my head.
this is definitely a great alternate version. and to have it only performed live a few times makes it all the more special and great. after all, corgan can't scream with that much anger all the time. love it.
why is the live version electric n heavy metelish the studio sounds more rock and roll aint happy with his sing he goes into his singing voice then i dunno sounds like hes shitting
Well, Billy wanted to kill his parents, But Billy couldnt kill his parents,...so he wrote this song instead. Great version, but the acoustic version still has powerful meaning.
I wish they would do a studio version of this. I love the original, but I like that you can really hear the anger in this one. Billy was really hurting and you can tell here. I bet that felt good to scream about his abusive parents in front of everyone. :D
@XxMissNoNamexX it actually has not everything to do with this. the Smashing Pumpkins headlined Lollapalooza that summer. that's 2 months of touring, and about 80 shows per month with each show being at least an hour and a half long, and in most likely cases an open air venue (climate changes). your voice would be strained too.
I actually love both versions, but this one has a different take, and it seems like Billy is just taking put all his anger, and I wouldn't consider it to be the "shitty" version, but yea I do agree the original is more emotional...
@schmittyc1993 I perfer to call it the "shitty' version. Why take an already great song and try to do this with it. Sure it's his vision and how he feels about it, but the mellow and quiet version just seems more emotional.
@wolfdemexico I like the mellow version way better as well. He just seems pissed off in this version, while it seems, as you said, emotional in the mellow version.
The story behind this is MTV forced Corgan to play Disarm (One of their biggest hits of the time) and the band didn't really want to they wanted to switch up their set for the audience. So basically it infuriated billy, and then you have this kickass warped twisted version of Disarm that brings a whole different spectrum of anger and pain to the song. Really, it does.
I love how billy loses his E string at 1:07...and other than looking down at his guitar at 1:10 it doesn't even phase him. Brilliant...best band ever!
The only thing bad about this are the fake grungers that MTV puts up near the stage. A friend who worked for them at the time told me they would take the dancers from a show that was on MTV at the time, then have them dress in flannel etc and insert them there. Looking back they look a little too clueless and too pretty to really be fans.
yes, it is. I heard billy was drunk on that version, but I think he wouldn't do that. He has strict rules for the band. Just a hard version of Disarm that's all. ^_^
i play in a band, and i think Billy just had stage anger. like he throws his guitar and the mic, well shit like that and then just walked off stage.. i cant even tell you guys how many times i just threw my bass on the ground and walked off. its justthat energy you get on stage!

Yeah they wanted him to play disarm and they figured they'd play it soft like they always do, but Billy was pissed so they played it loud and with distortion.

Well I like cells. Just not all the people holding them up at every concert. And using them for every little thought in their head. Plus people are so....you know what, you're right. :)
I think cell phones have their place and are convenient, but I envy my parents generation for sure and I didn't get one until 2 years ago at 30. But, think about this. How lame would have woodstock been with cells? Or seeing cells in your face while Charlie Parker or Miles Davis were soloing in the 50s? Or seeing Led Zepplin with the dude next to you talking on his phone? I think they are annoying at concerts. In the 90s, that was the last real era and people worried more about stage diving.
I, too, remember this back in 1994. What a great year for music. And a bad one. RIP Kurt Cobain. Alterative Music only had 4 year more good years after that. Actually, music in general with a few exceptions. You know, stuff not found in the mainstream. I think there is some really great stuff out there today, but not on commercial radio for sure.
I know what you mean. What sucks is that record companies stopped signing those talented bands. They can't make any money with everyone downloading music. In a way I think it serves them right for the way they've treated bands and what they charge for a CD.
Amen to that. That's why after 15 years later I still have and get vinyl including every Smashing Pumpkins record out there (yes, even MCIS, I have 2 copies and one is signed by the band in 2000). Any record I buy today better be worth listening to and are usually on indie labels. Alot, of them are doing what major label fail to do which is include a free MP3 or CD with the album. Independant labels are the best, it's just the masses that follow the stupid tends that are shove down our throats.
Yeah Nirvana was the first band I was actually emotionally invested in. When that happened, music was just depressing. The Pumpkins were the only band I had even a similar feeling about.
Radio and MTV now, I just don't get it. People still like good music, so why is it all being pulled away, and replaced with unwatchable 16 year old brats on MTV, and the same ten mainstream songs on an endless loop on radio?
And yeah cells at concerts have gone too far. ...cont...
I think I related to Billy more and plus I liked their music better. Not saying Nirvana wasn't good. I just like the Pumpkins more because they were spacy and heavy at the same time.
MTV is just appalling these day. It has been for at least 10 years now. It just wannabe image TV or Money TV. I don't watch it at all. This video is the way I remember MTV.
The thing about videos on cells is the quality sucks. So why even record? When I go to shows I want to experience the show, not post it.
I certainly related to the lyrics and personality of the Pumpkins more. And probably the music too. But Nirvana for some reason grabbed me more.
MTV is just sad. Such sell outs. I hardly ever watch it now. I haven't even watched like the last five Music Awards. And their "reailty" shows all look staged, and are horrible. I watch VH1 more than MTV. I honestly average about 2 hours of MTV a month. It used to be the main channel I watched. .......cont
I think Nirvana gets kind of old personally and I really don't listen to them that much anymore. That's not to say that I don't like them. It's a shame that they were only around for a little while because maybe they would have had change their music style. I was listening to both Nevermind and Siamese Dream the other day. I think the things that grabs most people about Kurt is his voice and style of songwriting. But, what grabs me about Billy is his passion in his solos and depth in his lyrics.
I pretty much turned the channel on when I was home, and just left it on all day. I can remember shows like 120 minutes were the biggest television event for me every week. Headbangers Ball, Superock, AMP. I have no idea why they decided to start these little pre-teen fads. I guess they saw the money in having shows that catered to 10-13 year old girls, who buy everything, and figured what the heck.
I think Canada has a good video channel. I wish I could still get it.
MTV is just no good anymore, period. I don't watch it at all in like 12 years or so. I use to like VH1, but they are becoming more commercialized as well and are not showing videos or music related programs as much as they did in the beginning. I just found out that VH1 has a new version of 120 Minutes that comes on at like 4am, but it's not the same. No interview and special hosts. In St Paul, MN where I live they have a radio station called the Current that plays good indie stuff from today.
Yeah VH1 changes at noon, but I watch it sometimes in the morning. After that it's like E. I'll have to look for that at 4am. It's been years since I saw a show like that.
I wish we had that kind of radio station here. The closest we have is college radio. Which can be kind of scattered. And I listen to my own Pandora station online.
I have some old MTV tapes somewhere. I'll have to keep them for history, since I don't think it's coming back like that again. But I can hope I guess.
I'm waiting for someone to post The Smashing Pumkins when they were on 120 Minutes in 1993 for the Halloween show. The did an awesome version of Geek USA that I have not seen since then. I was probably one of the best version of that song live and I use to have it on VHS, though my sister recorded over it with some stupid show like Saved By The Bell. The MTV that I use to love was that time period. I don't think MTV will ever be like it use to because our culture is about fads these days.
I have a bunch of old 120 minutes performances somewhere. But not that one. I don't think it's likely to come back because pop culture has never been this commercialized before. Everything is about selling something else. And the music companies aren't allowing another period like that to happen anytime soon. The one hope is youtube and similar outlets allowing it to blossom. But even then, viewers of 120 minute like shows will never be desired consumers. So we have to make our own...
Amen to that, I just try and listen to good bands and artist that are not in it for the money, but the integrity of their music. There are some bands like that, although not as many. Alot of them like to act like they don't care, but they do. I think this celebrity worship culture has gone too far and it's too bad that even Billy Corgan has fallen victim. Still, I relate can to Mellon Collie after all these years. And independent music is still the best stuff out there today. RIP 120 Minutes.
As weird as SP may get at times, and by them getting weird, I mean Billy getting weird, they still can make a song as raw and or beautiful as anyone.
Someone should start a website in honor of 120 minutes, Headbangers Ball, AMP, Superock and even Fab Five's Yo MTV Raps.
I think I'll start a playlist for it. I can go there and reminisce. And it may come back. There's always a cycle where important things become important again. Including music.
naw Much Music is starting to go downhill as well, all reality tv and such. They have a separate channel, Much Loud but who knows how long they'll keep airing stuff on there. The times they are a-changin'
Noooooooo! They used to make ads mocking that. Now they've joined the movement? That stinks. I was hoping someone out there was still putting music first. If tv and radio were trying to lessen the success of music they couldn't do any better than what they are. I don't get it.
But thanks for the update. I won't have to be upset over not having that channel anymore. Thank goodness Al Gore invented the internet!
...cont... And cells period. Now when something happens, instead of people enjoying it, or if it's bad, doing something about it, they just sit there and film it. So they can share it on some page of theirs online. Find a balance, people!
I can see wanting to capture some of a show or event. But to just stand there holding up your phone for the entire performance. Oh the days of interactions and interesting smelling smoke in the air. I hope they don't go away.
Billy was pissed cause Cobain had died and they wanted Corgan to perform the soft version of Disarm. They wanted the mood to be sad like Nirvana's Unplugged set. And Billy wasn't havin that shit! lol.
A: Billy wanted to do something that really rocked but at the time "Disarm" was the big MTV hit for the Pumpkins and so MTV insisted that they perform only that song.
It is also why he throws his hands in the air and walks off the stage at the end.
Thank God MTV insisted because pissed off Pumpkins = Incredible version of this song!
wow MTV must have been real dicks that year i heard nirvana performed at the same show and MTV told them not to play rape me and play the song lithium, kurt took a little bit of a different approach from billy thought they played the VERY beginning of rape me then switched to lithium to in kurt's words, give the produceres a little heart attack.
you're story is right, but this already happened at the mtv awards 1992. in the end of "lithium" they all scream "axl, axl, where's axl" because kurt had some kind of argumentation with axl rose backstage.
yes he was pissed but he didnt ''throws his hands in the air'' he just throws away his guitar pick you can clearly see he has one in the hand before he does that move
Esta canción es extraordinaria. No había tenido la oportunidad de escucharla en esa presentación de los VMAs. Ese disco es memorable. No hay excesos en él.
I miss this era of the Smashing Pumpkins and music. There is some good stuff out there when you look hard, but I'm glad I've seen them back in the day. Twice. And again a year ago. I've met Billy and he's really cool. I loved them when I saw this at 16 years old.

In St Paul, MN where I live they have a radio station called the Current that plays good indie stuff from today.
fatcatbuzz 2 years ago

I don't think MTV will ever be like it use to because our culture is about fads these days.
fatcatbuzz 2 years ago
I have a bunch of old 120 minutes performances somewhere. But not that one. I don't think it's likely to come back because pop culture has never been this commercialized before. Everything is about selling something else. And the music companies aren't allowing another period like that to happen anytime soon. The one hope is youtube and similar outlets allowing it to blossom. But even then, viewers of 120 minute like shows will never be desired consumers. So we have to make our own...
TheOpiumDistrict 2 years ago
....our own little stations on outlets like this. And our own stations on Pandora. And hope this consumer generation changes personalities.
TheOpiumDistrict 2 years ago
Amen to that, I just try and listen to good bands and artist that are not in it for the money, but the integrity of their music. There are some bands like that, although not as many. Alot of them like to act like they don't care, but they do. I think this celebrity worship culture has gone too far and it's too bad that even Billy Corgan has fallen victim. Still, I relate can to Mellon Collie after all these years. And independent music is still the best stuff out there today. RIP 120 Minutes.
fatcatbuzz 2 years ago

The times they are a-changin'
jdawg1692 1 year ago
@jdawg1692
TheOpiumDistrict 1 year ago
I hope they don't go away.

ivanweezer 2 years ago
Billy was pissed cause Cobain had died and they wanted Corgan to perform the soft version of Disarm. They wanted the mood to be sad like Nirvana's Unplugged set. And Billy wasn't havin that shit! lol.

hahah the string
purplestickypunch55 2 years ago
Anyone else notice Billy's broken string? You can see it dangling around after the 1:10 mark. And I love this version of the song!

I still remember watching this on TV when i was 16.
This version of this song always reminds me why Jimmy Chamberlain was and still is a very under rated drummer.
TorontoCanuck1978 2 years ago
Q: Why is he pissed.
A: Billy wanted to do something that really rocked but at the time "Disarm" was the big MTV hit for the Pumpkins and so MTV insisted that they perform only that song.
It is also why he throws his hands in the air and walks off the stage at the end.
Thank God MTV insisted because pissed off Pumpkins = Incredible version of this song!
kwc619 2 years ago
ive got a question, wot was with the random hop at the end of the song?
CjScott101 2 years ago
Looks like his guitar strap was caught on his foot. Or perhaps the mic cord.
kwc619 2 years ago
wow MTV must have been real dicks that year i heard nirvana performed at the same show and MTV told them not to play rape me and play the song lithium, kurt took a little bit of a different approach from billy thought they played the VERY beginning of rape me then switched to lithium to in kurt's words, give the produceres a little heart attack.
swissbird101 2 years ago
you're story is right, but this already happened at the mtv awards 1992. in the end of "lithium" they all scream "axl, axl, where's axl" because kurt had some kind of argumentation with axl rose backstage.
nirvana55555555 2 years ago
i always thought that he threw his guitar pick at the end lol.
valdivia3 2 years ago
yes he was pissed but he didnt ''throws his hands in the air'' he just throws away his guitar pick you can clearly see he has one in the hand before he does that move

I miss this era of the Smashing Pumpkins and music. There is some good stuff out there when you look hard, but I'm glad I've seen them back in the day. Twice. And again a year ago. I've met Billy and he's really cool. I loved them when I saw this at 16 years old.
