@Gazathehill you can't possibly lip synch this song because of it's fast pace and flow. i know what you mean but i think that's because the sound of the video itself is a tad off...
I had the great pleasure to have worked with Robert on Victor/Victoria. I was the photographers assistant in the scene with Julie Andrews. The Suck Egg scene!
I went up to Mr Preston and told him of my love as a small boy of The Music man film. I said Mr Preston, he replied Call me Robert! Had a really great time with Robert. Very sadly missed.
You can TELL that the female singer/dancer/actress that is behind him on his left (stage right) in the yellow vest is actually REALLY THRILLED and HONORED to be in his prescene at the TONY'S!!! Not the character, but SHE herself, is JUST THRILLED!!! LOVE IT!!!!!
Heavens to Meredith Willson! THANKS for posting this gem! One of the BEST songs, performances, shows & performers in Broadway history! Can't help but happy by clips like this! CHEERS, mate! :)
@JubalCalif I TOTALY agree with you!!! LOVE HIM! and your comment made me think of HEAVENS TO MURGATROID!... Snagglepuss! Ha I BET you know what I mean!! I LOVE YOUTUBE :-)
If you're a Bob Preston fan, you're obviously a lady of rare taste & refinement! Thanks for a wonderfully delightful comment! Yep, it was my old Shakespeare-quoting mountain lion friend Snagglepuss who let me use his "Heavens to Murgartroid" catch phrase. And now, to use another, "Exit, stage right...." :-)
I was at the '71 Tony's, and Preston came out during the commercial to set up for this number, and the audience roared. He was my favorite actor in the early 60's thanks to the movie The Music Man, and I almost wept when he came out, and I was so excited!!!!! It was THE most wonderful moment of my life!
@Lentenlands very rare in the entertainment industry outside of Broadway, but there are some excellent people working in Broadway musicals these days. I would refer you to Audra McDonald. Before age 28, she won three Tony Awards for her performances in musicals. She has a total of four Tony Awards. Her renditions of Edelweiss, Someone to Watch Over Me, and As Time Goes By are in my Favorites pulldown.
This is like old time rap! If this was rap today I would listen to it!:) Love Robert Preston!

My only regret in watching this is that it looks to be lip-synched. I'm sure they did not have the rehearsal time to perform it live. Maybe

Absolute proof positive that there was an ingenuity and talent that is NOWHERE to be found in the modern entertainment industry.
This performance and composition is incredible!

@Lentenlands I disagree, and it's unfortunate you haven't experienced any of today's. But you are right about this being great.

I second that emotion! The late great Bob Preston was BORN to play Prof. Harold Hill! One of the true immortals! :)
