@CntrSnr1 Pipers and Drummers who attend the course are normally from Scottish infantry battallions, in English battalions it's fifes and drums. All are soldiers first ( most are machine gunners) and the soldiering comes first.

This guy is very good and technical...a pleasure to watch. It seems to be a close copy of Scottish Pipe Band drumming though...to the point where I ask myself - was he in a pipe band...as the top pipe band drummers like the late Alex Duthart invented this sort of thing....he is very good, but if you see Jim Kilpatrick utubes along the same lines, he is another level up.

I would say he is in the Scots Gaurds because the author of the vid is scots gaurds which is a regiment in the british army that also has one of the best pipe bands.

what exactly does that have to do with the correct way to play traditional grip?? you don't have to be in a good band or drumline to know how to play.

but for my sake, i am in good band and drumline and yea i'll tell you this, I don't be play snare, I play bass but that's sad when a bass player knows more about snare than you do. and my tech is VERY good, marched dci so HE knows what he is talking about, so there for I know what I am talking about too. now what band you play for again?

Traditional grip in Scottish drumming (as illustrated in the video) is geared to use the thumb on the left hand to control your movements and the third / fourth fingers on your right hand to control movements.

Your drum tech may be telling you how to hold the sticks perfectly like a dci drummer, but scottish trad grip is different. This is an Apples to Oranges comparison from an open style (dci) to closed (scottish).

Also, notice his right hand grip isn't squared off as much as dci style grip.
