I think all his symphonies are treasures, some better than others. Taken with his quintets and quartets, its some of the finest instrumental music to come out of Italy.. or Spain.. since he worked there. lol
Too bad he didn't write more minor-key symphonies, for other than this one and the C minor symphony, I'm pretty sure that's all he wrote. But that's my qualm with the classical era (that is, post-baroque) composers in general, not excluding W.A Mozart. This is a fine symphony - my favorite movement is the third.
Speaking of which, do you happen to know any period instrument recordings of Vanhal symphonies? Also, do you know anythign about Mozart's German/Austrian contemporaries like Ritter? A personal goal of mine is to upload as much obscure classical era musical as possible. I've discovered the music of the Bach children, as well as music by Cambini and Pugnani lately. Very little reason I see for much of their music being no longer performed.
Boccherini's symphonies are always a delight. There's so much unassuming beauty in his music... He was called "Haydn's wife" by some critic - which IS funny - but he certainly had his personal style and a wonderful melodic invention and sense of sonorities. Whatever he lacked in formal strength, he made up for it plenty with so many other qualities.
i can see how the beginning can sound like house of the devil but the rest of the seems a little too happy. Is boccherini celebrating death?

This piece sounds like there's just a string orchestra and harpsichord. Tell me if I'm wrong or not!

It had to have Cello solos.... :-)
Boccherini, a great celloist and one of the best composers of the Classic Period!

It's a shame too that so little of Boccherini's oeuvre is performed, particularily his symphonies.
