Whoever directs this choir clearly doens't know musical history. Ubi Caritas which is a latin text from the Early Catholic Liturgy is a pre renaissance peice. Vibrato in the voice was a post renessiance addition. It is completly inappropriate.
True, but Rene Clausen is a Modern composer and this edition isn't 10 years old. I agree it's better without vibrato, but a good rule is color during the phrase and straight tone at the cadence.
that may be. but certain periods of music demand certain styles for the soul reson that it makes the music sound unclear otherwise. It is the case here. The harmonies are so think that the vibrato especially in the sopranos muttles the clear harmonies of the music to an extreme.
@ryanr3300 i just realized this comment was here, and i feel the need to allow you to have your opinion. Nonetheless the use of vibrato in this piece is first of all allowed because they are young voices and it's unhealthy for a young voice to be completely restricted of vocal freedom. And secondly because the text does not influence the use of vibrato, the harmony does, and this is modern harmony, vibrato is certainly appropriate.
i have been looking and looking and looking for this song! i rememba singin it with mr. redding at west orange my 1 and only yr in chorus and i loved it! mr. redding is a great man and a great choral director!
I really like this arrangement. His interpretation of the music is different from what I've heard before. I don't know if I like it as much this fast. Overall though, a beautiful piece and a very good choir considering the difficulty of this arrangement.
I was in this choir, and that year the choir had such a hard time tuning, mostly because of number of people. It is so hard to perfectly tune a choir of approximately 200. We raised it to F, and it fell back to E right around the middle. But still it was gorgeous.
OMG i forgot mr redding travelled and worked with other choirs. he was the most inspirational man in my life. So blessed to have been in his choir in highschool. this brings tears to my eyes, and memories back!
This is crazy cause i used to be in the OMEA but now im back in washington in the WMEA any who this is very gorgeous! My choir is practing a different version to take to state in april very excited good job!
hey its mr redding LOL i swear this guys the best teacher i ever had in my whole life. i respect that man so much and feel so blessed to have sung under his dirrection
i forgot mr. redding conducted the oklahoma all state! i miss him so much. i loved singing this with him at west orange! i wish there was a video of us singing this with him!
well i dont know what year u were in but theres a few videos from 2004 tour i think. just look up west orange high choir. theres only a few songs but theyre pretty decent
I love this arrangement! My favorite part to sing in it was the Soprano line "Si mul quo que cumbiatis, videamos, glorianter vultum tuum, Christe Deus"
Just wanted to say you guys did a great job with this. I sang it my senior year at Napa High in the Chamber choir and you guys brought me back. Couple pitchy spots but overall very well sung, awesome consistent tone. You guys should be proud , thats a hard piece. Keep it up
I'd just like it to be noted that we had been singing for an entire weekend, and had had a party the night before to celebrate the end. Our voices were tired and scratchy. It was a miracle we managed to get all the way to the end.
Im from Texas and TMEA! im not here to bash or anything but i just wanted to say you guys sound awesome and i wish that OMEA and TMEA would team up and sing together! that would be AWESOME!
I just got excepted into the OMEA(the Oregon one) today! I'm so excited!!

@ryanr3300 i agree with the historical aspect of your comment, but i think that the piece was well done with the vibrato; it made it sound prettier.

I don't know if this is just the quality from the video, but a little more volume would help
