Great playing, LP80. One of my Dowland favorites. Now, admittedly, I've only been skimming comments, but I'm not finding any responses to the oft-asked question, Where and how do I get a decent beginner's lute?
Thanks for putting this up. For many of us beginners out here, it is imperative to see the right hand in action, how it is held, and what to aim for. The internet has the ability to be such a great school of learning and inspiration.
this is fantastic.....i am learning this piece currently, but on a capo'd guitar and using your piece as a model. your ornamentation of dowland is, imo, flawless. not too flashy just enough to really taste the music. bravo maestro!
I have seen guitar transcriptions of this piece on You Tube. As a classical guitar player, I am more partial to the guitar, but I must say your lute version is magnificient. John Dowland would have been proud of you!
ps- That's not to say that you should be in it (or are in it) for the money! Haha! It's also just pure joy to listen to this music, as I'm sure it's also fun to play.
As a recording engineer, I could only WISH to have you in the studio to make an album. Seriously, consider it... you could make some serious money with the skill at which you play.
best rendition of this piece that i've seen on youtube. You've been practicing buddy! Tremendous. Congratulations! I like it a lot and i'm trying to learn it on the guitar.
I'm a harpsichord player and wanted to let you know that your videos have inspired me to buy a student lute and begin renaissance style lute lessons. Thanks so much for your incredible videos.
I hope people can appreciate how insanely difficult this piece is to play even decently. And you, my friend, play this more than just decently. Hats off to you.
Bars 46 to 59 (short phrases with its echo at the octave) are inspired by a theme in the song "Et d'où venez vous, madame Lucette" (Pierre Moulu antico and Brebate , La Courone, 1536, fol.11v) : "et nic, nic,nic et nau..."
Also in the Farce "Savetier nommé Calbain "Si m'y touchez, je vous feray mettre/A la prison du chasteau, nicque, nicque, nocque,"(H.M. Brown). So your "straightforward" interpretation fits perfectly with the light hearted character of this piece.Well done ! congratulations !
Thank you for sharing this precious and unreleased informations. Since I have played this piece without reading, I'll go and check the bars on the score :)))
Thank you for sharing

I saw Dowland in concert last summer and got his autograph. Nice guy.

I was under the impression that Dowland has been dead since the mid-17th century? Correct me if I'm wrong...

You're thinking of Johann Sebastian Beethoven who died of deafness.

its interesting that you are using the thumb under technique. is that how you always play or are you trying to be historically accurate?

...you play it like Paul O'dette...!

You're very kind my friend, but I don't think I play it like Paul O'Dette does.
luteplayer80 3 years ago
In fact, P.O'dette played 2 or 3 versions of this fantasia on his 'complete dowland works'...
Anyway, your sound is very clear and harmonious, that's the key.
and we want more videos from you...

a renaissance lute sounds much better than a guitarlute (and i have a guitarlute) but a renaissance lute is very expensive
