Nobody cares about Sarah chumming up to / groveling / hitting on the Mark. What a horrible interviewer, horrible interviewee and all around painful thing to watch.
She's pretty awful. It's hard to figure out how he should or could respond, and he seems to be doing his best - in his own socially awkward way - but it's impossible to navigate her self-adoring waters, isn't it? This is what happens when morons get gold stars, people. They think they're genuinely clever and cute and then they get to conduct interviews like this.
This guy will never be a super-success. I predict that facebook, like all social networks, will eventually fase out. It is simply just a fad that does not have the earnings capability of substaining its current ammount of success. Besides, it is not that brilliant if you steal the idea!!
How people become billionaires even millionaires on shit things like Facebook and Myspace, etc blows my mind. How is this even close to "one of the worst things in internet history." doesn't change the shittyness of Sarah Lacy or the asshole that is Mark Zuckerberg.
TechMundial, actually the video is about how hard it is for regular mainstream journalists to get interviews with insolent arrogant tekkies, they won't answer the questions and only will take queries from loyalist supine tech press.
have u ever been interviewed? sometimes the interviewer makes things stupid. also, she just intended to stay the course: how ever she thought the interview should go, she insisted on making sure it went that way, against all the resistance she received from the audience, rather than adjust to the way things panned out. it would have been better if she had just taking the earliest possible time to be more serious rather than losing control.
I am a tech reporter and Sarah's response is exactly WHY most journalists have a hard time getting interviews with interesting people (especially hackers). They see how these "reporters" act so un-professionally and get all defensive. HINT: those guys don't want anything to do with a defensive or confrontational reporter. Thanks for making my job harder Sarah. Please grow a thicker skin, get some humility, and add some tact and you will be better off.
She deserved what little awkwardness she had to suffer through. She'll hopefully learn from the experience, I doubt she'll hang up her career based on this if she has any backbone. I personally did find this instance extremely annoying, she reminded me of the popular girls back in school who knew they were attractive and were allowed to skate in social situations because of it. I've seen Lacy elsewhere, however, and i think she has more value than is apparent in this clip.
I came into this interview neutral and for the people who are saying Sarah is beautiful and intelligent you are correct. However in this particular interview [meaning that I have never seen a previous interview and am basing this reasoning on just this one] she is not doing a good job at being an interview since she just keeps rambling on about random [sometimes fake] stories and stuff that she knows and is not doing what she should do as an interviewer... ASK QUESTIONS!
i'm not saying this because I don't like sarah, but she's not good looking or attractive (because some ugly girls still attract by virtue of sexiness).
Tulkar, I agree. I have been saying this since the interview and getting bashed for stating that the audience was hostile from the get go. You are right. She set up a comfortable easy interview forum that fits the event.
I think she knew she wasn't really prepared to ask questions, or she just got really self-conscious and nervous. Then she thought "well, I'll do the best I can and have fun". she ended up obliging the audience and mark by saying unfunny and offensive jokes (throw water?) Mark tried to bear the brunt of the criticism from the audience, but she insisted: "no, he's making fun of me" she said. she wasn't preped to deal with an irritated crowd; worse she didn't realize she couldn't win
She looks absolutely relaxed and friendly. This convention has a party like atmosphere, I thought she was setting a very up a very casual interview. The guy is the standoffish one, and the crowd sucks....don't listen to these trolls Sarah, you were fine and engaging...the guy has no sense of humor.
@Tulkar I basically agree. Perhaps this 9 minute video didn't capture what the audience experienced, but I fail to understand the rage of the people in the audience or this being called one of the worst things in the history of the Internet. Furthermore, I am really disturbed by all the cruel, sexist comments in this talkback. What a bunch of trolls! Even if she failed, at least she put herself out there. Rather than a bunch of people sitting at home criticizing.
he expected to be asked questions and at times she simply failed to asked them and further proceeded to tell him iritatingly what was in his mind. The book that he wrote, for instance: you can tell he was frustrated when she said he burned them (first of all, how weird is that? that's, like, Emily Dickensonish). I'm pretty sure he's a likable guy (as long as your not the people he may have stole from, which I think possibly happened). But the interviewer sucked and she was annoying.
I hope there are more "controversial" interviews with boring CEOs and other artists of emotionless barfspeak at the next SXSW so I can continue to be amazed at the intensity at which people get riled up over the stupid little things that dont matter at all. Thank you, internet, for this new phenomenon.
This was a classic of exampe of tech geeks hazing m. I am just speaking the truth. They are jealous of Zukerberg and even more so of Lacy. She is successful, educated, and beautiful. NO ONE LIKES THE SMART AND PRETTY GIRL. They walked in ready to hate and that is clear from the get go. Get a clue! The interview was laid back and fun as it should be at SxSW. Quit being haters and learn to grow up!! Have some guts and quit hiding behind a blog! None of you have the skills or smarts of Lacy!
A big lesson for anyone who wants to conduct interviews (including me): Know your place, keep respect for the interviewee and for the audience, keep control of the interview, and try not to lose your cool. Look at Matt Lauer--he is himself a celebrity but he always talks to people (whoever they are) as if he is nothing and they are the focus of all his attention and respect. It will take real courage for Lacy to continue in her profession after a PTSD inducing experience like that.
I almost cant stand watching it. So painful. She really needs to get a grip on how to interview and act more professional. Try not to be a such a circus in public as well.
yes but there is a difference between a person on the street AND SOMEONE FROM BUSINESWEEK INTERVIEWING ONE OF THE TOP DOGS ON THE NET. so bad. too bad.
"I mean, come on, you don't actually think the company's worth $15 billion dollars, do you?"
what would any CEO say to something that insulting about their company....who the hell hired her to be an interviewer??
