  • This is without doubt my favourite song of all time. I remember it being released when I was a kid and I have been a JT fan all my life as a result. I have seen the band many times and I must have played this song thousands of times over the years, I never tire of it. This version is enchanting and brought a tear to my eye. It will be whats played when its my time to check out, that's for sure.

  • My favorite JT song! Does anyone know how this ensemble came to being? Looks like it could have been in his house. Wonder if any other recordings were made at that session?

    ttmcin@hotmail.com

  • It is a departure from what I as a youth saw of Ian Anderson. It is a mellowing of the man, and a harmonious extension of his creative talent! Roger A Quick

  • Probably the coolest person on the planet.

  • love it

  • lovely version, heartfelt strings and piano :)

  • I was lucky to get 4th row seats during their "A Little Lite Music" tour. When the band played this song, my thought was even if I live to age 100, I will never hear anything as beautiful as Ian and the band performing this song.

  • I've been listening to Jethro Tull since I was 11 years old. I am 45 now... My son is 17 and he enjoys it as well. We both play his songs with our guitars. Ian Anderson is an immense artist indeed, very much under-evaluated. Absolutely brilliant!

  • Probably the greatest guitarist ever....

  • STILL ROCK AND ROLL, still has the voice

  • Absolutely Brilliant. The greatest:)

  • Absolutely awesome!!!

  • This is Absolutely Brilliant. STP

  • wowwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • so beautiful...

  • Probably one of my favorite Jethro Tull songs. Excellent piece of work.

  • a master at work

  • awesome musician. I'm hoping to see them again on next years Thick As A Brick tour.

  • some twat dislikes this.

  • Thanks for this. wonderful genius

  • Universal music, a perfect philosophy and perception of this our Life..........

  • As a lifelong JT fan I was miffed to have missed their concert in Perth in 2010. It's just great to see Ian Anderson giving this classic the full treatment. Great musician and human being looking years younger than I remember him.

  • He's still got it.

  • Every time I hear the opening notes of this song I am unable to scroll past it. I am very happy I got to see them in concert for my birthday a last year. This tune ends to soon

  • you know it's my favorite

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!

  • First big band I ever saw and an eternal fave...because its true

  • IA & JT the best in the Universe, are a Geniuos!!!!!

    from the Mexico city

  • IA & JT the best in the Universe, are a Geniuos!!!!!

  • Whoah, this is incredibly awesome. I saw Ian Anderson w/ Jethro Tull only once back in 1987. Was a bit put off by how he was "complaining" about being an old man at 40, but I didn't quite realize at the time how much mileage he'd had on him by that point. It's great to see that he still has an amazing voice and is keeping it all together and real.

Life really is a long song. Thank you Ian, and thank you OP for posting this!

  • Gosh. Wow, I'm sorry, I am slow. I have seen several videos in this segment and was just enjoying the great music, but I just noticed he is wearing an aloha shirt lol. Idk, I'm from Hawaii, sorry i would notice something like that smh. Great artist though. :)

  • jimmyjam437. That's great. Sound's like something I'd say. Was the greatest decade for music and I know I'd go back in a heartbeat. Rock On, man!

  • great stuff

  • Beautiful

  • Blimey!...This is CLASS!

  • I remember getting a detention from the history teacher in 1971, when he asked me who Jethro Tull was. Instead of replying that he invented the seed drill, I said: "They did Living in the past didn't they?" He was not amused.

  • I saw Ian Anderson perform live with JT in Colorado back in the day. And I must say I loved his craziness. But his sane self is pretty remarkable too. Glad to see he's survived intact.

  • When I was a kid I wanted to be a MUSKETEER listening to this music in the 70's. I was living in the past. -- Carry on Sir Anderson.

You are The True Minstrel in the Gallery -- God Bless You!

    Hello from Bradenton FL. USA

  • The 'Divinities' album he did with Andy Giddings is truly exquisite. If you've not heard it I so recommend you do. In a quiet room, with the lights down, you can lose yourself listening to it.

  • Cheers and a long life!

  • As it should be....

  • Absolute brilliance!

    A very well crafted performance!

  • OUTSTANDING!!!!!!

  • Just Wonderful

  • To Those who care:

I could weep hearing this. To the great, great grand children of the romantic and Victorian age and those that are born after 1946, :This is without peer.

  • does anyone know what type of flute Ian has?

  • @AmandaTull9 I'm not sure what type of flute it is...but in some of his CD's, he gives his thanks in the acknowledgements to "All Flutes Plus". You might check there.

Or, if you go to Jethro Tull's main website, I think you can email your question and they will send it to Ian for you. hope this helps.

  • @RooseveltFranklinFan Thanks a ton! :)

  • Absolutely brilliant performance. The subtle nature of the complexities of the song well voiced and executed. A pleasure to hear...

  • This is perhaps my favourite Ian Anderson composition. It has everything. A wonderful melody, thought-provoking lyrics and a voice that resonates throughout the years. He is an artists of immense talent and this song personifies his remarkable ability in being able to turn a relatively simple melody into a musical masterpiece. Pure genius!

  • Can't wait to see him live in Exeter on 25/09/11.

  • @jimmyjam4371

    can't find that date?

  • It's Ian Anderson and friends not Jethro Tull. Shame about that.

  • @jimmyjam4371 Da Capo, Of Course! ;-)

  • @MrPaddyelvis My mistake, I meant 07/09/11 at the Corn Exchange. Sorry about that.

  • just seen ian, tull in phoenix, yes hes old, but you know what? so am i! i cant wait till we meet in the sweet light of dawn, im blessed to have listened to his music, and to grow old to it, the last 40 has been good to me,ill always be there for tull

  • I wish Ian had enough acoustic material to do a full concert with this string quartet

  • "Life's A Long Song?" I keep hittin' the frickin' bum notes !

  • Gran canción. Gran versión. Sólo sobra, a mi juicio, la batería.

  • You can tell on his face that he enjoys playing music

  • The drummer looks bored. I'd jizz my pants if I had the honor of accompanying Mr Anderson

  • @3234718 The bored drummer is Ian's son, James Duncan.

  • @TULLRULZ Wow, didn't know that! Well, Ian's son certainly looks like he'd rather be anywhere else. Yikes. Maybe that's just the way he plays, but still you think he could fake some enthusiasm while the cameras were rolling. Otherwise, it's a great version of this song - marvelous string arrangement!

  • What a poser.

    JUST KIDDING!!!!! JUST KIDDING!!!!

    Genius is the word.

  • This is incredibly awesome.

  • With every passing year , I become more grateful that I grew up listening to this. It just gets better and better. I pity the young aspiring musician growing up today having to weed through the garbage that passes for music today.

  • ....and this is Perfection at it's very finest...yes, this is how it's done.

  • this is how you arrange strings.

  • Life is a long song, and friend you proved it, bless you for the decades of unmatchable innovation and dedication. Others say it, but I am your number one fan. It was my dream to meet Frank Zappa, but that isn't gonna happen, now my dream is to meet you and have a pepper eating session coupled by a sip of tea while having a quiet conversation and possibly a live tune or two by you, my hero!!!

  • WOW!!!

  • My father often heard Jethro Tull when i was five or six, now I'm thirteen and already was on four live concerts! :)

  • He needs to become a SIR. If he haven't already and I am so out of this world.

Really. He shaped the Rock Music by so much.

    Hartmut

  • @hbeil He is in fact Sir Ian Anderson. He was Knighted because of all of the income and jobs his fish farms brought to his local community, or something like that!

  • Goosebumps. Terrific..

  • .

A Great Version Of a Beautiful Song! ;o)

  • This is almost too beautiful. wow.

  • That guy on the drum is Ian's son.

  • @khashayar44 I feel he has an attitude and I feel that Ian feels that too!!!

  • "Mature Rock", and this guy is never too old!

  • great music - great setting- great cellist

  • amazing..... what a great artist Ian is...

  • The master and his musicians play the music of our life: sublime.....

  • Ian. Genius. Out.

  • somebody can help me to find this dvd title ? tks

  • @campocal yeah...its "LIVING WITH THE PAST"

  • Beautiful simply BEAUTIFUL !!

  • But the tune ends too soon for us all...

  • I was a hotel receptionist where they were staying in 2006. Mr. Anderson let me take 2 pictures together with him, one with my arm around his shoulder. He also arranged for 2 free tickets to the next days concert, 2nd row seats. He also gave me the opportunity to express my long time appreciation of his music even though it was 12 midnight. I also upgraded their rooms!!! What a gentleman and may the rest of his life be lived in peace and harmony.

  • very nice Ian!

  • An excellent arrangement of an excellent song. And Tull are ever my favourite band. Thankyou for the years filled with Tull classics.

  • Terrific !!! Always the best in music. I will say: is that the "wiser" version of Ian Anderson?...Anyway JT and Ian brought in my life many years ago..and they will reamain for such a long time....!

  • fantastic talent. amazing. I love playing flute, Jethro Tull brings the passionate spark into my life. He inspires creativity in me I might otherwise not have expressed. Brilliant.

  • The one who put thumbs down must have had a mental breakdown in the moment he did it, anyway 273-1 is a good result.

  • At 23 years old, a lifelong JT fan, I am glad I have seen this band live. It was my father's birthday present a few years ago (another fan). This song will be played at my funeral and I am sure that everyone here will understand why.

  • @venturabass this is a superb choice for a funeral.

  • A funny one ;)

  • @toker53 I will have it played at mine, for sure

  • @venturabass My funeral song will be Velvet Green. Cheers from Texas!

  • @1973galaxy500 mine's already written in my will - cheerio from broadsword

  • @1973galaxy500 You know that that song is about sex lol

  • @venturabass ....your too young to die..But not to old to ROCKn ROLL...

  • So true,tiger2995, absolute genius...you must listen to Wond'rin Again if you haven't. Tull's social commentary has usually been submerged under a sarcastic brand of humor. His music was integral in many of my life experiences and continues to bring back fond memories of "Living in the Past"

  • me too, pmmugitus,i heard this song first in early 70`s in Living in the past and never forgot it,what a nice song and so describtive of life, our lifes should be a long song and a love song!

  • Beautiful.

  • Absolutely magnificent. 'Nuff said.

  • nothing to add: Excellent !

  • un mito che mi ha fatto sognare .

  • Fantastica!

  • Thank you Ian for you gave to my life!!! I remember the best times ever.....

  • ..Nicely Done...

  • Honestly, I don't know why...but I cannot watch this without tears streaming down my face.

  • I definitely agree, it's amazing beautiful song, one of the greatest songs in the history of music. Jethro Tull live forever.

  • brevity is the source of wit, .....to Whoo

  • I was wondering where this was from, a video, concert, or a one off 'special'? A beautiful rendition nevertheless!

  • Ian Anderson is truly the "pied piper" of a whole bunch of people who are somehow united in the recognition that he is singing "our song" that we all resinate to - like some ancient link that reminds me that we are part of a tribe that is united by the stories Ian has conveyed through his awesome talent !

In this fucked up world full of fools - hypocrits - politicians and phonyness , it is truly fine to behold GREATNESS , in Ian Anderson !

  • @rolynstone48 HARK AND CARP!!!

  • @albatross7677 what does "hark and carp" mean?

  • @unclejohnthezef Those with two good ears had better listen!

  • @albatross7677 i'm listening! i'm listening! thankee!

  • @rolynstone48 Well said! So true...unspeakable talent that unites all Tull fans in an unspoken kind of reverence.

  • I thee will wander the green foe of feast and happiness..Love you for your goodness and follie...Great music my Tull...

  • He still sings soft songs like this good.

  • does anyone know what year this is?

  • @nyg1954 2001

  • I had to laugh a couple of years ago, when two lads behindus, in the concert queue left the line, when we tactfully explained, no, it was NOT, Jethro, the South West Blue Comedian..

  • Fantastic.

  • My cd was messed up and this song would just stop at about thiry seconds. For a years I thought it was jethro tull being ironic (a thirty second song called lifes a LONG song). Now I know for years I've been missing out.

  • Just one word: brilliant!

  • What DVD is this from?

  • Saw Jethro Tull in concert in Reading earlier this year - fantastic - being in the audience was like being amongst a huge group of friends... have always loved Ian Anderson's voice. Halloween is the perfect time to listen to my favourite song - Witches Promise.

  • Jethro Tull is one of the best bands of all time... no words to describe the talent the magic... ;))

  • Leaves one speechless....simple genius!

  • Wow!! This is magic! All acoustic, full and rich, revealing the level of sophistication of the composition. I think I've died and gone to Heaven....

    Thank you for this posting!

  • Magnificent. Thank you Ian - for a lifetime filled with your unparalleled musical genius. My life would have been very different without you in it.

  • Supreme artist!

  • As I said earlier, this should be played at funerals for those that enjoyed life. I'd like it played at mine. I think the best time to play is when the casket is being carried out of church. Perhaps it would bring comfort to those attending and offer solace. I am not sure how the church would feel about it but they will get over it. In essence, I dont want religious songs. Hopefully, it will be a long time from now.

  • right on!

  • Ian Anderson, what a pure musical genius! Just beautiful!!!

  • Excellent!

  • i seen jethro tull once in my life and was simply in heaven. that was on my bucket list too.although i would fill that list again and see them again.what can i say i love his music and love ian. he puts me in a happy spot.thank you ian for your music.

may you continue to make music for such a long time.

  • This song does things to my soul no other song does and what a great version.

    Love you Jethro Tull!

  • so beautiful! there are tears of joy in my eyes.......

  • @ChiroQuacker so why are you here listening to it? Probably too English for you?

  • @ChiroQuacker hey first off ian anderson does not sing alike in all his songs.open up your ears. also you are probally listening to this new crap so called music and wouldnt know intelligent music if you heard it. which in my opinon ian anderson is first class.he is excellent flute players, guitar, harp player as well as singer. i mean he can go from playing guitar to playing the flute ect. and sing at the same time too,all this in 2 hour concerts. i mean he is one amazing man. i love him.

  • @sweetsusan146

look susie dear...i'm sure back in your younger years..you were quite the head turner...

but this old fart ian anderson he is not in the league of usher or justin beiber or coldplay...pete doherty is a genius and blows this old fart off the map...

and this ian needs to listen to my man lil' wayne...and learn something like how to write great songs...

take care susan....bet your milk bags are down around your knees these days

  • @ChiroQuacker What a nice person you are, and such intelligent argument too! Yes, insults are always the way to persuade people and win respect. Er... not. How much of the Tull catalogue have you listened to? Have you watched Anderson as a young man? Yes, Coldplay are great, Doherty's great, Usher? Mmmm... but anyway there's room for young and old in this business. If Mozart were alive today would you call him an old fart just because you don't like his music. And please have some manners.

  • @scottytrotter

i happen to be a very nice person unlike yourself i bet...

i made an observation that you do not agree with..ok .]

but now after watching this clip again..i take it all back..i like it...

ian is a great talent and great show man....

and coldplay and doherty really suck....no talents who back in the 70's could not have measured up to the competition ian went against....

  • @ChiroQuacker A very nice person who likes to make abusive comments to people because you don't agree with them.To quote you: "...bet your milk bags are down around your knees these days". Anyway, you seem to have done something of a" volte-face" in this comment. Do you just like playing devil's advocate?

I happen to be a very nice person too, BTW. :)

p.s. Check out Tull doing My God at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970

  • Beauitful!

    I get very emotional!

  • Class..Pure class, Ian Anderson shows his skill at singing and playing, no need for fancy recording studio add ons. The others can a bit as well eh?

  • It was amazing when it first came out... it's still amazing now.

  • splendid Ian as usual

  • FABULOUS!

BRAZILIAN PEOPLE, LIKE ME LOVES JETRO!

    LIFE IS JETRO SONG...

  • God save the Tull.

  • Just visiting again to check and.....yep! I still love it!

  • this song has give me me so much joy...along with so many other of Ian Anderson's music

  • Only a gifted heart can compose such beautiful music

  • all hail ........the mighty ian...

  • respect man....awesome...the only other song that makes me cry is "the best is yet to come" by clifford t ward....check it out

  • I think this song should played at the end of funerals. I hope mine is quite a way off but would like it at mine.

  • This is great like having Ian in your living room!-Oh ya!

  • Since I first heard this song I have always said that I want it played at my funeral. Morbid though it sounds, I hope you all understand why.

  • @venturabass really love that idea... and i completely understand...peace

  • bellissima..........

  • wow!!

  • love love love this version of one of my favorite tull songs...

  • Understated power. One of the best things I've stumbled across for a while. Sheer, well, sheerness.

  • Actually the drummer is James Duncan. Well... James Duncan Anderson, Ian's son :-)

  • @flyingb

    thanks for the information :)

  • @flyingb Thanks for that info.

  • Thank you soundofsilenceuptome. This is one dvd i will not regret buying.

  • I have followed Tull since its founding through thick and thin. This is Ian at his finest. The musicians playing here with him are superb. A true genius.

  • This as an
