You Tube can be dangerous when you start clicking around!!
I watched SFU years ago, but after watching this and the "BEST FINALE EVER- ANY TV SHOW" the tears are coming like I just watched it all yesterday.
I remember feeling so cocky and confident that because he was a main character and so important that he'd have his little surgery and all would go back to normal. Thats what they do on TV right!?
Did this get out on internet spoiling it for anyone? I was SO SHOCKED AND SAD!! gulp
I liked Nate alot, he was the all around "goodguy" and he was generally kind to those around him. However, he never knew what he wanted and that annoyed the hell out of me. When Brenda told him that he just wants to be "Nate the fucking hero", back in season 2, she was right. He always wanted to be some good guy and made everyone else who he was in a knot with, look bad. He was too much of a confused person for me to embrace him the way I did others.
I think that in this scene, Nate and David are dreaming of the same scenario, but with different perspectives. It starts off with Nate dreaming, and everything is calm and laid back, since he is willing to accept death. He's at peace about it. When the colour changes (around about 4:18), it switches to David's dream. He doesn't want Nate to die, and so his dream takes on a dark nature, representing his fear of death. The bit about the crack adds to this (his fear of the guy who carjacked him).
@Infammo ahhh okay...yeah i stopped watching i think even before the first season was up just because started a new job and had no time to watch it...might have to go back and finish the series now
@austinap5 David is dreaming of what kind of brother Nate would've wanted him to be, and, in the last scene in the dream, the sea is probably a reference to death, where Nate is heading to, saying "This is what we came here to do." We live to die.
i didn't notice til just now but when David says "you look tired" Nate takes a second and responds in a very sad/serious tone saying "I am". I really think the writers meant for that to be Nate realizing he's tired of the life he's living and that he kinda finally let go knowing he was about to die, even though many times in the show he's expressed how afraid of dying he was.
@BougnouleDeMerde Well thank you very much, you're too kind! Sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm female, therefore I can't be a "faggot" as you so eloquently put it.
The ignorance and arrogance of homophobes always amazes me. Whatever floats your boat, man. I'm not judging, but come on, don't give people who happened to like the character shit. Just let them be, dude.
That scene was chilling. That Dialogue is incredibly well written. "We've been waiting for this our whole fucking lives" " this is what we came here to do". Something tells me they weren't talking about a swim in the beach....Pun after Pun.
the crazy part about this scene is, even if i didnt know the song in the background this wouldve been my favorite TV scene of all time. But strawberry latter 23, this particular version, happens to be one of my favorite songs that i just discovered a few months before finishing SFU. classic shit right here
this is the greatest scene in the history of civilized humanity... words cannot express what i felt watching this.... it was confusing, beautiful, strange, embracing, horrible, perfect... and other emotions that cant even be named.... it really affected in many different layers.
I think this dream is interpreting Nathanial Sr and a straight version of David(both who are dead in they're own way), and are leading Nate to the light(which happens to be a the same setting as for when Lisa was found dead).
i can't fully understand this dream, that's why i find it the best.
whose dream is it? what kind of crack is it? why the father would join him as he's already dead? why do they get back their suit? why is it the reason they came for?
It's funny, coz I was SO mad at Nate for what he did to Brenda, yet, when he died, I thought my heart just stopped. He's a great character-extremely complex and well rounded, but most importantly incredibly real. Losing him was like losing someone in my life.
@loserwoman87 For some reason, I felt like he told her that because he knew he was going to die and was trying to make it easier on Brenda to let him go...just my interpretation
@ThatsWhatSheSaid0012 I can see where you're coming from-he had a weird vibe on him for the entire episode-calm and reserved, no passion in him, completely so far removed from his usual ways of acting. He kind of knew in a way-for searching for something that'll enrich and complete his life, at the end it was only death that brought him peace. It makes him a more tragic and, on top of that, more interesting and fantastic a character. God, I could write essays about this show....
Wow,@PRE1959...you're a nut case dude. Nobody cars how you feel about a fictional character who obviously had a profound impact on your life. He is...again...a fictional character whose real name is Richard Krause. I'm sure he is living large laughing at your comments right now wondering, "who is this Fruit Loop?" Please, do us all a favor and go get a life you queer bastard, i beg of you. Oh an by the way, I am going to laugh my ass off when your family dies too.
My heart dropped when I heard the flatline as he disappeared in the ocean and automatically thought of Lisa's body lost at sea. To those unsure of the dream, imo the title explains it all. Remember Nate said that ecotone is when two ecosystems overlap. Ecotone metaphorically explains the dream perfectly, Nate's dream overlapped with David's; they both dreamed Nate's last moments together.

I love it that Nate died. He was a selfish, miserable FUCK. When he killed that Bird I only wanted him to die of Anal Cancer. In real life if I saw someone attack a defenseless bird I'd beat the shit out of them. I know he was just a character, but wasn't it strange that he hated Lisa, and then after she Died he played the bereaved widower. I know dirty fucks like him who always want to make everything about them, and blame everyone for their fucked up lives. FUCK You NATE, Glad your DEAD.
i saw the whole serires and have two questions, why does david get offered crack and why does it say nates dream when daivds the one waking up from sleep??? plz explain love this show to death(pun not intended)
@wiiplaya25 if you've seen the whole series then you will remember the episode where david got kidnapped and almost killed. remember the kidnapper smoking (and as far as I recall offering him) crack?
@wiiplaya25 I believe much is up to interpretation, but at the end it cuts away to David, so it is possible it is actually David's dream. Then again I could be wrong.
@wiiplaya25 delayed response, I know but one explanation is that it's that they both have the same dream. notice that the camera zooms in on nate's face when the dream sequence starts but the dream ends with david waking up. amazing scene anyway
@raidensreturn BURN in Hell Nate. You miserable prick. Always betraying anyone who cared about you. Glad Brenda ended up with your daughter, and happy before you got to shit on her again. David you were a filthy Faggot but at least you didn't intentionally hurt people and kill defenseless birds.
@kylas124 Why because he was A Bird killing selfish, fornicating back stabbing fuck, who didn't care about anyone but his own belly? I was so glad when he died and they cut his eyes out. Siox Indians used to cut their enemies eyes out so they would go to the next life blind. GOOD, now Nate can't kill anymore defenseless creatures, Episode 5x4 "Time Flies". just cause he was a miserable fuck. Poor Brenda, he was about to shit on her again when he croaked. I laughed. Thank you Alan Ball.
The most powerful scene for me in the whole show was the one where Nate helps that guy who is dying alone and wants to be cremated in a cardboard box. I've been through episode guides but cannot for the life of me find the episode! Please someone tell me!!
"The Last Time" is the episode where the young man dies, but I think he appears in the two episodes beforehand, "The Liar and The Whore" and "I'll take you"
@sodaisgood12 I'm sorry, but no way. Michael C. Hall is really great in Dexter, but he has more range as David Fisher. He expresses a hell of a lot more emotion.
Well, of course he expresses more emotion as David Fisher. Dexter is a serial killer, a sociopath...he has no emotion. The fact that he cannot express "feelings" is a common focus of the show and his inner dialogue. He's incredible as Dexter!
Such a sad moment in the series at least nate's father was there at his passing even though he only appeared in a dream sequence. I like how he turned out to be the driver in the van.
I think nate is that type of character that started his life too late, and that's why he's so a damn great character. I mean, he reconnects with his family and starts a brand new life into the world of brenda because his father died, he faces parenthood and marriage, and then the tragedy of lisa's death that really turns him around, and just when it would seem he starts to take his life the way he really wants, he dies. anywhow, great scene, great show.
