I do think Rudy had a good voice and with more work and lessons, he could have been a good singer if not a great one. I know about this stuff; I studied voice when I was taking acting lessons years ago. My teacher said it takes years to develop a voice. Rudy did take some singing lessons before doing this recording, but not for long enough. He just wasn't totally ready to record yet. But he still did a nice job.

@EutuveX As an actor Rudy was required to wear costumes, even extravagant ones, and make up because the role called for it (Monseuir Beaucaire--an 18th century French nobleman). He wore make-up only while filming, something true of all actors during the silent era. In real life he was an impeccable dresser who never sought gaudy attire. Photos of Rudy bear this out.

@EutuveX PT. 2 Claims that Rudy was gay were started by jealous men who felt inadequate when their wives and girlfriends adored and lusted after Rudy. The husbands and boyfriends all wished to be like RV, but because they could never measure up to him, they circulated vicious stories to cast aspersions on RV's sexuality. They said he was gay merely to spite him.

@EutuveX PT.3 The gay community has tried and failed to claim Rudy as one of their own because their claims are exactly what you say they are--rumors. These rumors have always been groundless and even to this age have never been proven. As for Rambova, her attraction was always to fame and personal gain. She was acquainted with Nazimova, but not because of an attraction to her.

@EutuveX I assue you I am a lady in EVERY sense of the word. You and the source you failed to cite obviously didn't do their research. When RV married his first wife, Jean Acker, he didn't know she was a lesbian. She was so terrified of consummating the marriage, at the mere prospect of sexual intimacy with a man, that on their wedding night she locked RV out of their bedroom and later fled in fear. RV divorced her when he learned the truth and for her refusal to consumate their marriage.

@TheLadyMalfoy You are definitely a lady, and there is tons of evidence for it -- in the way you express yourself, and in your intelligence in not jumping to conclusions about someone based on rumor and hearsay.

Rudy was one of the best people who ever lived, and he had so much love to give, but he had a tendency to fall in love too quickly with the wrong women, and he suffered greatly for it. This should arouse compassion, not contempt, and you clearly have that compassion.

@kangadillo Thank you so much for your lovely complement. :-) Yes, I agree completely with you about Rudy. He was never truly loved or appreciated by the women he loved so much (JA and NR in particular). This must have caused him great heart ache and grief. I wish I could hold him in my arms for the longest time, comfort him,, and tell him there are so many who love him and appreciate what a truly beautiful, special person he is. I'd just want to make him feel loved.

@kangadillo Great minds think alike! :-)) All Rudy ever wanted from the women he loved was so very much to be loved in return by them. It's like the words of the song "All I Ask of You"  from "Phantom of The Opera". . . . "Say you love me. . . .love me, that's all I ask of you." Everytime I hear that song, it reminds me of Rudy. All Rudy ever wanted was to be loved.

PT.2 If RV were gay, he wouldn't have objected to being in a lavender marriage (a loveless, sexless marriage that exists in name only and to give the public a false impression that one is hetero). His desire to have a marriage in EVERY sense of the word led to his relationship and marriage to his second wife, Natacha Rambova. By Rambova's own admission they had a very active sex life.

She also confided that she became pregnant several times while married to RV and, without his knowledge, had three abortions while still married to him. They later divorced when she placed more importance on her career rather than their marriage, and chose career ambitions over wanting a family.

Even the rumored relationships (Nita Naldi and Vilma Banky) were with women, as well as the brief love affairs (Mae Murray). None of these women ever once claimed RV was gay, even in the decades after their relationships. Add to this, those who knew RV best, his brother, Alberto, other family members, RV's manager, all have stated RV was NOT gay.

RV's brother specifically said the only times he saw Rudy fly into a rage was when someone claimed or insinuated he was gay or effeminate. It was then that Rudy usually answered those claims with his fists. Whoever claims Rudy was gay should provide evidence to support their outrageous claims. They should pay attention to the facts, not rely on mere hearsay and rumor.

I've always found it fascinating that Mr. Valentino is singing a woman's infatuation song. And as for those who don't like his voice, remember this is an acoustic recording, and there were none of the electronic tricks used today. Not bad for an amateur. Mistake not to have marketed it when he was alive.

The basic voice is not bad—he was Italian, after all!—but his Spanish is terrible and his phrasing completely improvised. Yet he could have developped into a singer, I think. He certainly carries the tune well. Very interesting offering, Peppopb.

He did indeed, in 1923- it was backed with his rendition of The Kashmiri Love Song, from The Sheik. For unknown reasons it was shelved until after his death.
