he did a nice job -- and the male lead actors in musicals often get the fringe benefits of serenading lovely ladies-- Not a bad gig is it? Even Pinza knew that[although he had the Frenchman's role in South Pacific ]
I'm sorry but in theatre you need actors who can sing. not singers that can so called "act". Great voice! i love what the musical director did with the movement of the song. it's just the acting isn't the greatest. Great job though! i just played Cable actually and i wish our musical director did something similar because that seemed easier than the original where it is very ploddish
Performing the play under these circumstances is pointless. If Cable and Liat are the same race, a major theme of the movie is missing, which was the portrayal of prejudice against multiracial relationships. If there are no Asians at the school, then Liat should be played by a black girl. Also, the Cable role needs to be played shirtless. If he is not comfortable being shirtless, they need to find someone who is. If the faculty is too prudish to permit it, they need to find another play.
In some respects, there are compromises at work here, as you point out. But remember that this is a high school production. The goal here is primarily educational, to teach these kids about performing and theatre. Almost any play performed by high school kids will involve some compromises. Should high schools refrain from producing shows?
@mindspring57 Woah. When you are doing a High school production they have to make compromise. As weird as it is, there is a very small pool of kids willing to do musicals in high school. So if the casting director had a very small group to select from without an Asian, then they had to pick what was best talent wise of who could play an Asian. Im sure they didnt just drop that storyline of the MUSICAL. And you didnt lose that much of the musical with him not wearing a shirt. Same story.
I wrote this in response to the negative review below, which I felt was out of line, but for some reason, it posted at the very top. (I enjoyed this clip and the singer.)
Gotcha! :) depends on the high school, I guess. 20 years ago in Los Angeles, we were able to show Maria and Tony (West Side Story) in bed... By the way, at your age a little time in the gym does wonders... so much harder at my age (less testosterone as you get older)! :) then you COULD do the audience favors!!! LOL Good luck in the theatre, bro, you're off to a good start!
@applejuice255 You're so lucky. The theatre company I'm auditioning with require that all actors auditioning for the part of Cable sing this song with their shirt off. Not that I'm worried ;)
That happened at my HS--no asian girls auditioned. The theatre teacher actually ASKED several girls, some who weren't even in the theatre dept, to try out. Solved the problem. Maybe an idea to suggest to your theatre dept for next time? :) cheers!
AHHH BRAVO. my highschool is performing that in a couple weeks. im Liat. i hope i can perform it as well as that. i just think it's ironic considering they are both caucasion and it's a racial thing.. but w/e. FAVORITE. AND BOY CAN YOU SING!
I have no idea who these people are (was just browsing for the song), but was BLOWN AWAY by this kid's talent! Wow. What an incredible voice and natural charisma. I've heard this song a million times, but this kid made it his own. I hope he decides to go into showbusiness!

Yes! I found a white girl. My high school is 95% white so we couldn't cast any asians. I got Liat! I'm so excited!
These guys are so cute together!!! Well done!

great rendition of a great song. (though kind of a creepy song in context if you have a teenage Liat and an adult Cable)

guess they're not allowed to imply that they had sex, in a high school production... or Lt. Cable take off his shirt? Great voice tho...
Kaileo1 4 years ago
hah as much as we wanted to imply that, yes you are correct.
And my taking my shirt off would not have done myself, or the audience any favors...

Why wasn't a real Oriental cast as Liat?

Maybe, just MAYBE because none auditioned.
