I'm not a fan of clowns and I know that there were a lot of different people who played Bozo. However, this guy was really cute. Funny that his name was Gordan Ramsey. I see that this was filmed in 1968. The chef Gordan Ramsey was a child then. By the way, what was Phyllis' last name?
@theothersituation Ha! It's a nickname. His name at birth was Milton Supman, and because of the last name , the kids in the neighborhood took to calling him Soupy.
I'll be honest, I was born waaaay after this t.v era (I'm almost 23) but I was always interested in old-time things like this. When I first found this, I was very young, and he had a game show, and I imagine it wasn't the same Bozo. I guess you could call me an "old soul", but seeing things like this, things that shouldn't exist on youtube but I'm thankful they do, it makes my young heart smile. To Adamnedeff, thank you so dearly to appealing to the old-young part of me. :')
I grew up watching the Boston MA Bozo (Frank Avruch) and still have the autographed photo he gave me at a personal appearance at a Brockton MA department store in 1964 or 1965. (Yes, he was in makeup and signed it "Bozo".)
Bert Convy died from brain cancer nearly 20 years ago (1991). And perhaps everyone seems happier because (1) they're on-camera n and have to be; and (2) there weren't nearly as many 12-Step programs or rehab centers back then.
I have always wondered what Mr. Ramsey looked like as he was the voice of ' Captain Avatar ' on Star Blazers. Now I know. Granted he wasn't speaking with the 'gruffness' of Captain Avatar, but I could definitely tell it was him.
As well they had a clip from the Howie Mandel talk show, and they had the fella who does Krusty the clown on the simpsons, he himself had grown up watching the Chicago Bozo the clown and based the voice he does from that clown. wish they would put some shows on here, great kids show, they just don't know how to make shows with imagination anymore...
I found an old vcr tape that had went on all night, and came across the chicago wgn-tv special on bozo the clown. I watched it, bloopers and another clown, and some magic guy. It was great, would love to throw it up here, I was looking for others but see that they dont allow it for the chicago one. After seeing this bozo and some of the others, well they just fall a bit short after seeing the chicago Bozo.
@yogafan6500 The original Bozo first appeared in the late 40's and was played by a man named Colvig (last name). Bozo did records for Capitol Records. He was later played by Larry Harmon who then purchased the Bozo license and franchized the Bozo character. Bob Bell played Bozo for Chicago's WGN-TV, but others played Bozo in other places.
@greekweasel: That would be Pinto Colvig (an ex-Disney animator and voice artist; he was the original voice of Goofy), who originally played Bozo on those Capitol children's records [78s in those days] before Larry Harmon, who eventually bought the character from Capitol Records and franchised the character to many local TV stations.
In the cities where there was no locally-made Bozo Show, the version from Boston was syndicated to those areas.
@BurberryShades No doubt. This guy is terrifying. The hair, the weird mouth make-up, the falsetto followed by the "Jimmy Stewart" voice, the theatrical, effeminate gestures. The whole thing is creepy. There is an entire group of people who are frightened by clowns. This clip gives some insight into why that might be.
god, everyone seemed so much happuier in the 70s...men grew their hair and dressed sharp[ and everyone seemed so much more human.......what's become of bert ?
@posthumanhero Those were the days... I base myself off 'em... I dress totally vintage, with black and brown as main colors... And reeeaaal long hair... And the music!!!
before the cable/satellite era, the national Bozo show came out of Boston (why else do so many people in the USA think the "ram it clown" myth came in on in their Bozo show). the Boston Bozo was used in markets that aired Bozo, but did not produce their own show. (smaller markets may not have the studio spece to make their own Bozo).
@funkyinca Phyllis Newman was a NYC area TV personality in the '60s and '70s. She was a panelist on a lot of TV game shows during that time frame as well, such as "To Tell The Truth", "Match Game" and others.
Bob Bell was the only officially recognized Bozo. The licensed Bozo clowns were contractually limited in how they could use the Bozo name. Some were sued for working outside of the terms of the license contract.
There's nothing scary about a clown--in a circus or something. What would be creepy would be meeting one down a dark alley or wooded area at midnight...
any others were just poor imitations of the one and only BOZO THE CLOWN
This is why you hear adifference in their voices The original show was broadcast from my hometown of Chicago it was truly amazing and there was a 7 year wait for tickets #1 fan
