I have this precise recording on my computer that I put on here from a mixed cd a dear friend gave to me - but no track names or artists! I knew this piece immediately, and have been searching for over a year now to find who the vocalist is ... and it's none other then Virginia Zeani! Well, well, well! The best of all best sopranos. There were and are many great ones but Virginia had EVERYTHING. Many had a thing or two thex lack in this repertoire or other, she had it all and could sing everything with perfect technique..from Gilda to Aida, from Anna Bolena to Tosca and more. Her voice is the most beautiful and her singing poised and expresive unlike of any other soprano in history. She is the most underrated singer of all time.

Astonishing singing! That big full sound, velvety yet bright, easy fluid coloratura, complete control of dynamics and color, huge thrilling high notes. Zeani had E-flats earlier in her career, but who could miss that one note after the 637 other great ones. She looks like Gloria Swanson!

I grew up on an old version of Traviata that was recorded somewhere in Eastern Europe and Zeani was the Traviata. After a childhood of being obsessed with Callas, she was my next great revelation and she lived up to it in every role that I ever heard her in. She went on to be one of the greatest voice teachers in history. This is a lesson in singing. 5/5
