  • I LOVE THIS SONG SO FAR IN MY BOOK THHATS THE BEST CONTRY MUSIC I'VE EVER HEARD LOVE IT SOOOOO MUCH!!!

  • im from his hometown haha

  • @hokie16 What town is that?

  • @Thegoat152 grundy,va

  • @hokie16 He is not from Grundy. I know most websites say he was, but he was born and raised in Rowe, Va. About half way between Grundy and Richlands.

  • Rest In Peace..

  • Very nice country song. Thank you for up load.

  • And died on his 43rd birthday. That is awful. RIP Mel.........

  • @terryzassoff1 It was actually his 45th birthday. See somehow public records marked his birth in 1935, but the family says it was 1933. I visited Mel's grave last month and his gravestone list his birth year as 1933. He and my grandfather were first cousins and he is gravesite is in the same cemetary as a lot of my great grandmothers people. The older generations of my family who knew him growing up have always told me it was his 45th birthday.

  • My grandpa is Mels cousin. I heard lots of stories about him. really wish i could have met him.

  • @Mesacrazyy

You can tell some of the stories now. The statue of limitations has run out.

  • Born in Virginia...the greatest and prettiest state in the union. Singing about the Smoky Mountains which borders the Blue Ridge Mountains....the greatest and prettiest in the world.

    RIP Mel

  • One of my very favorite songs ever!!

  • This is the epitomy of what a country song should be.

  • I LOVE this song and I agree with rockbach1. I recall this song played at the Saturday Night dances at Garner State Park. Just listening to Mel's voice brings all those great Summer memories back of swimming in the Frio River and I can see the couples dancing under the stars to Mel's song.

  • @MartyTheWineGuy I grew up at Garner State Park too. Smokey Mountain Memories was always my favorite "Garner Song" as we called them back then and I still do today.

  • mel street never got the credit he deserved. this song is proof. all others can piss off. very rarely can songwriters come up with such heat felt lyrics like this.

  • High is the poster child for planed parent hood .

  • Great song and real country music. For somebody form TN, it really must bring back some memories.

  • J'aime, j'adore...........................

  • i heard this song today-what a gifted singer.wow. imagine an old vietnam war horse breaking down and crying for no reason. he singing really touched me. thank you

  • That was funny High.

  • This is a pale sustitute for a true Mel Street song: There's no mention of his wanting to do the "Deliverance" thing or get in the pants of a 13-year-old Smoky Mountains ho.

  • @highnrising

Good gracious "High", what have we got here? I am just shocked by your comment. Sometimes being "funny" isn't. What would your Mama say?

Guess I'm the only one you've riled up here. But I'm here to tell you, all who knew Street say what a fine man he was, and I will vouch for that. Not just a fine singer...a fine person.

  • @graylyns Dont sweat Ḧigh",there is always an idiot in the crowd.

  • @sds1962 Oh, leave graylns alone!

  • That was someone who could dig deep into the heart. Missed but not forgotten

  • my daughter is bi polar also....RIP Mel....

  • This is one of the most calming country songs I've ever heard and very nostalgic as well.

  • I miss the mountains.. They make me feel at home.

  • The Perfect Country & Western Song !

  • What a great loss a wonderful singer and has been mosty forgotten.....:(

  • Mel Street was definitely a great sing. So sad he left us to early. Beautiful video of Mel and the Smokey Mountains. Thanks for sharing

  • Perfect country song. Thank god for the music appreciation he put in us. Thanks for posting this song.

  • We lost a great country singer when we lost Mel. Rest in peace my friend.

  • Great music by a great artist! Its a shame he left us so soon. RIP Mel Street!!!

  • that harmonica is sweet, im in love

  • One of the best songs ever Up there with In the Misty Moon Light

  • one of the best!!!

  • a truly GREAT country artist....

  • One my favorite songs ever.... remember listening to it on the 8 track in my Dads old wood panel station wagon. Laying in the back looking out the back window. I looked for forever for this song and this artist. Thank you for posting such a wonderful recording with such great quality.

  • smokey mountain rain drops..keep on fallin! i keep on callin..her name!! good song!..

  • And the dispute continues...it is listed as written by ETC and Devereux(pen name for Dick Heard.) BUT... there is a guy from NC mountains says he and Mel wrote it and sold it to Conley and Heard because they were broke. Somehow, I believe him. Says he played with Street and he is very, very good. Plays at mountain and folk festivals during summer season. Of course, someone could just ask ETC, or this guy if willing to do the legwork as I did.

  • Love it.

  • What happend to country music like this ?

  • @3261969

We STILL Play it like this in El Paso TX!

  • @3261969 I do not know try WinMX P TO P songs ITS THE BEST

  • @3261969 There isn't a such thing as Country Music anymore. Just a bunch of low grade "Country Rock" played by marginal singers that construct every song around some kitschy one liner or catch phrase about a bar, getting drunk, a pick up truck or the words Honky Tonk.

It is truly sad that this great genre of music is dead and gone. Sadly, I find myself listening to electronica and pop 4 times more than country now.

  • This is such a beautiful song! I had to listen again while it brought back memories of my childhood.

  • great singer great song thanks

  • I was a freshman in college when I heard this song. It was sad to hear of his untimely death at that time. Such a timeless tune from truly great singer. May he rest in peace......

  • One of the great country songs of the 70's by one of the greatest country singers of his time, although he never got the acclaim he should have. Every time I hear a Mel Street song I'm filled with sadness at how his life ended. A true giant of country music!

  • @artsevere miss mel as much as keith whitley

  • 5 star song; I love it...

  • Ron Staple is playing steel on this song he plays for Martina McBride now and is another Paul Franklin.

  • TenStarsplus !!!!!!! This has to be one of the most beautiful TRUE country music songs EVER recorded !!!!! Does anyone know who is working the pedal steel ??? It sounds a lot like Buddy Emmons or Little Roy Wiggins, or possibly Leon McAuliffe!!!! Thank you for posting my favorite country music song, and if Mel Street isn't in the country music hall of fame, it's a shame because he should be !!!!

  • How great is this song. I remember it from high school.

  • highnrising's old lady - mel had her.

  • song touches my heart....

  • great song ........:)

  • OMG thank you for posting one of my all time favorite songs!!! RIP Mel Street!!!

  • i love this. reminds me of my mamaw :)

  • Now this is what I call country music! Thanks for posting...keep up the good work!

  • hey highnrising if you hate mel street so much why the hell are u always looking at his videos you fuckin' loser!!

  • Elmo didn't tell you, but he actually has 61 people tied for number 4 on his list.

  • might be my favorite song of all-time.. Mel Street is one of the 5 best country singers of all time

  • How strange that he died on his birthday. always loved this song.

  • He took his own life.

  • Brings back so many memories of late nights on WIVK bless Mel gone but never forgotten

  • one of the best country songs out there. makes u proud u live in the country.

  • WoW! what a song! Make me feel go back to country life !

  • This was one of the first records i played as a 14 year old country DJ...Mel Street was one of the best.

  • I'm so glad someone's added this song to YouTube. I was in the mood to listen to it -- but God Only Knows where I put my old 45" record! Thanks 'cafevideos'. :) Great song and now I don't have to go rifling through boxes of records trying to find it!

  • Hate to ruin your day, Toots, but Mel Street ain't in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

  • OMG Iwas around nine years old the last time I heard this song

  • growing up in the smokey mountains, you can only imagine what this song means to me! great job.. thankx

  • blessed is a man who has found his work his labors to share, for such a feat is all too rare, too many the dream that falls to the way, a life a spirit thats left to decay, a moment in glory is better than all, eternity spent with grind and with gall, godpeed to the runner whos found his road, for surely its heaven that mark to have toed.

  • how beautifully said

  • soothing and beautyful makes me homesick

  • Awasome!

  • Never anyone smoother.

    Thanks!

    Jon (goneglobal35com)

  • no MrClyde it was suicide.

  • oh wow, small world huh? shame about Mel, really is. Well same way Faron Young went out, another of my favs... SAD.

and yeah Mike J. is an AWESOME steel guitarist, SO talented, I can "tell" his playing apart from anyone's to this day too... I used to have THE WORST crush on him when I was younger and he used to come around DE/MD/PA/NJ with Bill Anderson, I was like 16 and am now 44 LOL... he's STILL got that awesome smile too! NICE guy too... sweet!

  • I met a friend of yours today

    another Great Mel Street song,

He shot hiself in the head the day after the CMA country music awards in 1978 i Believe?

  • drug and alchool overdose

  • loved Mel Street and he had one of the greatest steel guitar players in his band, Mike Johnson who later played MANY YEARS for Bill Anderson in the PO' Folks band, now is a Nasville studio/sessions player...

always loved Mel's voice, music, good ole' cheatin' cry in my beer country, and this one was my FAV MS song... about a FAV place of mine, the Great Smoky Mntns. where I spent ALOT of time camping with my hubby and our son when he was younger... Gorgeous... brings back sweet memories...

  • Is that Earl Thomas Conley singing harmony? I know he wrote it, but did he sing on this version?

  • no it is Earl Sinks

  • Earl Sinks also did harmony for Mel Tellis and on many other artist. He also was with Buddy Holly and the crickets.

  • Thanks.

  • This is one of my all-time favorites, there sure ain't a country song today that can even compare.

  • Real country music , love that steel.

  • I used to live in Bluefield (where Mel's from) and watched him on local TV...once he made it big I could never understand his suicide....God what a talent..He really was a sweet man.

  • great song. takes me back to garner state park.

  • i danced with a beautiful girl to this song. but i can never find the 2nd to last song that is always played at the dance

  • I love this song, it's one of my favorites. Way better than the one Dolly Parton or David Archuleta did.

  • Great Great voice one of the best in the buisness wish you where here today happy birthday friend.

  • happy birthday your great

  • Happy Birthday Mel Street. We wish you were still around making great music. At least we have these great memories.

  • What I wouldn't give to live in Tennessee. I do get to visit there now and then cause my husbands mom lives there. Maybe someday I will go and stay.

  • Thanks cafevideos.

This is my favorite by Mel.

    Debut on: 3/1/75 Peaked @ #13 Charted 14 wks.

Number 8 of 23 charted songs.

  • He was one of a kind....Great voice!

    God Bless You Mel....

  • This is the song that has been haunting me since 1975.I could only remember little parts of it.Today's the first time I've heard it since then.Very touching

  • Love this! thanks for the email tip on his greatest hits. i had a cassette yrs ago but now i only have a cd player in my car so I[m looking for a cd of greatest hits.

  • What a moving song and all the more haunting knowing that Mel died so tragically. An absolute classic country song that embodies all that country is supposed to be.

  • You can get Mel Street's greatest hits on Amazon

  • Mel Street wrote and first recorded Smokey Mountain Memories

  • You're talking nonsense.

    ETC wrote--or cowrote--this song.

    Street got it much later.

  • @MrLynyrdskynyrd

According to ETC's website, Allmusic, and the credits on my dad's vinyl copy of this record, it was written by Earl Thomas Conley and Dick Herd. Mel recorded the song first, but it is not unusual for up-and-coming artists to have success as a writer before they have success as a singer.

No disrespect intended to the truly brilliant Larry Sparks.

  • @MrLynyrdskynyrd

Well Earl Conley's and Larry Sparks' albums on All Music Guide list this song as being written by ETC and Richard Heard. Even some of Street's albums list the song as being written by Conley.

But don't worry--He didn't write "Sweet Home Alabama"

  • I have ETC's version. It's on the "B" side of the 45 of the single "After The Love Slips Away" I saw ETC in Little Rock Ar. back in 1984, I talked to one of his band members in between shows and asked if they do this song in the second show. They did it and it sounded great, both versions are very good

  • Looks like Mel passed away at a young age..
