Absolutely awesome tutorial man. You have a real talent for breaking it down simply. This was one of the best ones I've seen for Live. Been using the audio FX racks for a while now, but I never knew about the VST configure button. Sick!
Nice tutorial, It normally takes me a while to remember things regarding sound design/synthesis etc (yrs of abuse taking its toll!) but you explaining it in a neat simple way, some people try to make it sound more complicated than it is, yeah good tutorial man!
Doesn't, "If you learn to use both this will help if you need to go out on the road with one or the other." mean that I don't really need this piece of kit?
How will this help me?
LIVE 8, Remote SL, PadKontrol Guitarist with limited keyboard skills (with keyboard), Macbook Pro?
I'm trying to figure out a good reason to get this besides it's visual positives.
I'm curious if you found using these two controllers side by side is especially useful, or if it actually complicates your flow? If you find it very useful, does anything in particular stand out? I was looking at a similar setup myself, tho an APC40 is a bit down the road for me.
I love using them together. There is some overlap with functions but this means you just focus on the device you are using at the time. If you learn to use both this will help if you need to go out on the road with one or the other.
great vid! can u somehow save ur settings with the remote sl. For example, configure it in the rack view, assign remotes knobs to it and load it an other set?
I read that u cant save with remote sl mappings of ableton devices like operator or effects. The upper 8 encoder knobs are automatically assigned to some functions. But u can directly save mappings to massive vsti with it?
If you go the route I illustrate in the video and have the SL set to the Ableton channel, it will automatically pick up device param names. So, the names are saved with the device.
Alternatively, you could instead create Automap 3 programs for each #vst. You just have to switch to this program on the Remote SL.
Hi, I wonder, what's the trick to install automap properly as you say? I had automap pro 3.1 installed on my macbook and updated to 3.3 today and somehow controllers don't work or don't show up on the left sreen of my remotezeroSL.
Nothing is physically connected to the sound card - just USB and Audio Out. All the virtual synths route to the sound card via audio preferences. Check out the lesson the built-in "Setting up Audio I/O".
Can you map the xy pad on the novation to a device's xy chart with the ball in live? I am thinking of getting an SlmkII just to do this (or use my kaoss pad).
I personally find it way easier ot use defaults on apc 40 and customize the device or rack. That way no matter what device or rack I'm using things always work in the same predictable way.
thank you for this i was wondering if they thought of a way to map the order of vsts in ableton :) cant wait for my apc i strive on consistency in my setup ....one reason i have fixed down most of the automap on my sl :S
One thing I am wondering is how to control parameters in different groups at the same time?
Let's say you have parameters for NI Massive n Group 1-8 and parameters for NI FM8 in Group 9-16.
How can you control parameters of Massive and FM8 at the same time? Is that possible? Just wondering because you have to select the groups with the SHIFT key.
I recommend loading Massic and FM8 into a rack. Macro knobs can be assigned to more than one parameter. You could then map params from both synths to gorup 1-8 and control without having to hit shift.
Yes the the new device selection via blud hand functionality is also great and works well. Didn't want to cram too much into this video so I have thoughts on covering this in a future vid.
You can also right-click on a device and lock to a control surface.
Lastly you could change the preset on the Novation to listen to the device via automap 3 and map parameters that way.
I'm using The SL in Ableton template mode to map to what ever rack I select in the rack selector. I could lock my SL to the rack in my synth channel but then the LCD won't change as I change the chain/sub rack (unless I'm mistaken).
That was extremely helpful, thank you brother for devoting time to helping out.

Absolutely helpful. I really like the various examples and detailed live screen shots used. What kind of complex VST's do you use?

@djspeeddemon I use Waldorf Largo | Tone2 ElectraX, Gladiator 2 | Camel Audio Alchemy | Ableton Sampler, Operator, Tension... | SonicCharge Synplant, MicroTonic | Native Instruments Absynth 5 | U-He ACE, Zebra 2 | FAW Circle | reFX Slayer2 | Image-Line Harmless, Harmor...

Nice and clear tutorial ;)
In fact, before getting an SL too, i was using a crappy Evolution MK-225C.
And used a remote control script just to map the 8 knobs to the 8 macros of racks.
You just need to map the 8 macros like you done in Ableton rack.
You save your rack and every time you load it, the 8 macros of any crappy controller are already assigned to any VST :D
A kind or poor man Automap, but very effective.

can i use the effects from massive on audio track? or is it just for the midi tracks?
cheers :)

Hmmm. Unlike Absynth, I'm 99% sure Massive doesn't split off it's fx as a seperate vst.

The Gooey? That's a funny way to say GUI.

In the development worlds it's quite common - and it does sound funny come to think of it.

No, they are apples and oranges. I just meant that where they overlap you could use either. They are actually quite complimentary in most ways.
If you spend a lot of time in session view and want to launch clips, record on the fly in, launch scenes the APC40 rocks.

Thanks.
I will pay money to get off the mouse (almost) completely.
Will this do it even tho I don't act like a DJ?

how did you set up the sl to listen to ableton to automatically set the value names on its lcd screen?
dangerdan89 2 years ago
This is automatic. You just need to have Automap software installed properly and have the Remote SL on the Ableton Live program.

Even if automap is installed properly, it might not work if it's not configured properly in Live options. Double-check thoses settings

Yes. You should be able to midi map or assign via automap.

thanks alot for that. just want to know, how many effects groups can you bank on the the apc 40?
wildcomfort88 2 years ago
You can select any device in the track with the arrow buttons. You can use shift-device 1-8 to control up to 64 parameters.

You could select the track with the APC 40 using "Track Selection" and then the SL strip will map to what you selected.
