Well its like the Russians say...if you have someone behind you shooting you if you run then you tend to stay and fight. If you run you will die if you go foward you might die...its a pretty simple choice.

If you are Germany, one strategy is to diplom. influence Nat. Spain until they have 200 relations with you, then ally with them. You will be at war with Rep. Spain, and you can send troops there to fight to make sure Nat. Spain wins. This also has the benefit that Nat. Spain will enter WWII with you, and Spain can invade Gibraltar which makes the war in North Africa easier. Only problem: rep. spain MUST be annexed by 1938. Events for Anschluss with Austria won't fire if you are at war!

The Spanish Civil War is rigged depending on who you play as. If you play as a Fascist nation (like Japan, Germany, or Italy), then the Republicans will win. If you play as a non-Fascist nation, like the UK, the USA, or USSR, then the Fascists will win. This is to make it so you don't get a free ally that easily. This is not 100%, it's possible for either side to win, but which nation you are playing gives a bias.

@CallyA That is not true. It really isn't. You can watch every forum and every website and they say that it is not true. I have personally tested it with three patches of Doomsday and NONE of those games have supported opposite side.

@CallyA hey im not sure of your arguement but i just want to say that the game developers specifically put it so that if you are playing as a country on the nationalist side the republicans have a better chance of winning and if you are on the side for republicans more likely the nationalists will win... only way to help your side dramstically is direct intervention wich means actually invading the opposing party of spain or sending large amounts of troops

@Lucazzy You do not command individuals as you would in AOE or Total War , your forces fight on the map at a strategic level (a single division often being about 9000 men). There are many mathematical variables in the combat such as terrain , commanders , experience , logistic efficeincy , etc. Major battles often take a while to fight out and can have many events and interventions within them

The reason the Communist troops are superior is because most of the Nationalist troops are city dwellers, while the Communists were mainly farmers, and because of this they had some expertise in guns and were much more powerful in hand-to-hand combat.

I used to have hearts of iron on my old comp from my friend ... but didn't get it on my new one, what would usually happen in spain is you think "Oh no the nationlists are doomed" but as soon as they get cornered they have conquered the vital supply lines in africa and portugal, then suddenly beat the living crap out of the republicans, China usually gets attacked early but then rises out of the ashes to crush the others somehow.

@jedq Total War is about legion and squadron commanding, Age of Empires of completely different and is all about evolving through the ages of war and killing everyone, this game is a nation building game and is focused on division warfare.
