First, i want to thank you for not generalizing by saying "Black people". It's a Mentality, a psychological devoid of poverty. Yes, Hip-Hop fashion has influence people to over spend to buy "Baby Phat" or "Jordans". Your view point focuses on the Urban communities which Hip-Hop culture came, and you can identify with the Culture. The American Dream is to be successful and rich, sadly, many people cannot accomplish this. So, they simulate it. The States remain #1 in credit card debt.
And if you want to get really in depth, our country's national debt is Ridiculous, but that's another story. Even our country's leaders cannot "Budget and invest" properly. As for the Urban Communities, i personally believe it's Escapism.
You made some very valid points when you said they dress to cover up their poverty and their priorities are screwed up. Where I work it's the people who have the lowest paying insurance that demand the most!!! I never could understand that.
I agree, alot of people be fronting. I dont care if you spend money on all that good stuff as long as you got the disposable income but if at the end of the month you bitching and scrambling to pay rent and other important bills then thats not a good look. Great vid
It's the music videos that teach people that having money is the way to be. A lot of people want to live hood rich, but swear up and down that they are broke because they are oppressed. Granted oppression is real, but I refuse to oppress myself financially. That's why they will never get out of the hood. These same people ask me how I live in the suburbs, because I conserve, save even while paying for school and paying bills. I save my money and invest it in my business ideas. That's how.....lol
Yea this is so true, Yo maybe its because we were inslaved stripped of every thing and shoved in the ghetto. Mayb blk peeps are makein up for lost time lol. Yo this hiphop life style does not help as well.
I totally agree with you on that, I don't make at a lot money myself, I thought the clothing store Steve N Barry's was a godsent, I love that store, I save so much money on cloth there.
Not to mention, in my opinion, a lot of the hip hop clothing lines are of little quality. Once I found out that the buckles of my baby phat purse was held together by what looked like elmer's glue...I was through with even trying to begin buying name brand.
I hate to sound cliche, but I think that a lot of the expensive taste comes from watching music videos and hearing rappers talking about living like a baller.
Foreigners are not distracted by all the clubbing and partying and distractions here because they do not understand the culture. WHAT ISSS FUNNY is that when many of them get americanized and start clubbing, spending 150 dollars a night on expensive dining and drinking.Buying the expensive clothes and shit, they end up struggling in debt like the Americans. haha!!For every success story, you don't hear about the ones that got "caught up in the American hype"and went home to their families broke.
Can you please press reply to the person you are talking to? Do not make new comments. Press reply on the person's comment and leave yours. Thank you!
Antwon.. don't get me wrong, i agree with you.BUT when i say americanized, i mean in this country there is soooo much freedom.More than any where else. THAT ALSO MEANS FREEDOM TO FUCK UP.FREEDOM TO DO NOTHING AT ALL. Foreigners come over here with a single minded, almost god-inspired ,goal to work, work, work, and achieve.
That is true Antwon... about incentives. Also a lot of foreigners consider Americans lazy. That's not to say i want to work like a fucking slave for 5 cents like a lot of them did in their countries. What i see that really makes them hit the ground running here is the same beef i have with misslady and jwriter4.They hit the ground running because they immediately network with the established of their people. BLACK PEOPLE ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME!!!! THEY HELP EACH OTHER!!!!
You should hit the "reply" button next to the person you want to respond to instead of making new comments all the time. That way, the person gets the email that you have responded.
One thing i admit for sure DreamReborn. Foreigners are a whole nother pedigree. They come from a completely different environment. A lot of people really have no idea how different American culture is from every other place in the world. They are more successful just on the strength of not being Americanized
No, foreigners are given passes here and incentives to stay here. The government give them our land and territory. The government want foreigners to come over here, but what they give to the foreigners, they won't give to us.
there are people of all economic status trying to "keep up with the jonses". There are plenty of families making over 100k per year and in all types of financial debt.
Of course wealthy people can fall into debt. This is simply because they live beyond their means. Just because you are wealthy, does not mean that you can afford everything.
True...but check it out...there products are cheaper because they're no where near as good as the original. Support black owned businesses...in turn, they should look to hire more black people...more jobs for black people, with good pay. Keep the money circulated within the black community...phuck the Ralph Lauren, Armani, Coogi, etc. My aunt goes to an African hair salon, forget the other salons that sell the asian products..."they don't care about your hair"...another quote from urs truly. lol
The thing is this. Asians, Arabs and other non-blacks are examining our businesses, copying the items and selling them for cheaper prices. Blacks living in poverty are obviously going to go after the cheaper prices.
Yeah you right, people make me sick of comaring our situation to the arabs, mexican's, and heck even the African's. People need to realize that these immigrants that come from other countries get special incentives to come here. One of these incentives is them having their own stores, monopoly, and they're own community within a community.
Not all immigrants get "incentives" to come here. I know many illegal immigrants who come here and started off with nothing and created a lot of opportunities for themselves.
The government knew they were here. Remember when George bush made the announcement of allowing illegal immigrants to stay, and plus the ones who did come here came on the invite of a relative they had here that already had money and a successful business. Ever though how come the owner's (who are immigrants) of these laundry's, restaurants, etc, always have workers who can't speak correct english...get my point.
I come from a city where the immigrants are the store owner's, and have their own monopoly communities. Whereas the blacks don't and if they tried, they couldn't get a loan or get denied. How come an immigrant can here, get a liquor store and a lottery machine, etc, but a black man or woman can't? It's a setup, just like you never had any winning lottery ticket come out the hood.
I have a Mexican friend who came here illegally. He told me his story. When he came here, he spoke no English and he knew nobody. Today, he speaks damn good English and has a steady job. He even brought his little brothers from Mexico to stay with him. He did all this in 5 years, while being an illegal immigrant in this country. Why can't an American citizen do the same or even better than him? LAZINESS!!! TOO DEPENDENT!!! WANT THINGS EASY!!!
Dude trust me, They knew he was here illegally. Can't you see the deception, think about it. I know pretty chaldean's, mexican', even African's myself. Man, it has nothing to do with laziness, or dbeing dependent, it has to do with COMMONSENSE. I just said how come it's easy for an arabic to get a lottery a machine in they're store, but a black man or woman can't. It's plain and simple.
I know black people from the Caribbean who have come to America illegally also and made a comfortable living for themselves. The only thing holding African Americans back is themselves. There are too many opportunities in America for anybody to say they can't get work, especially here in NY. I see young blacks wasting there life hanging on the block when they could be making a couple dollars at the fast food restaurant right next door. LAZINESS!!! DEPENDENCY!!!
Again, haven't you read my comments. THEY KNEW THEY WERE HERE ILLEGALLY. Man I agree with you that we have opportunities to better ourselves, but come on, why are these immigrants coming here and bringing they're own communities and circulating they're own money within OURS. Please don't say because they're not americanized, because if that was true, most of them would be in college. These people are successful without the college degrees, but we HAVE to go to college. Connect the dots.
i agree with this 100% yes a person can come here make businesses etc...but they will NEVER be taken seriously in the corporate world without a degree straight up!!
Our entire country's lifestyle is programmed from birth to be consumers to keep the capitalism running. It is all not JUST "keeping up with the Jones", because I know many older people (70+) who never were this way. They conserve, even though extremely well off, because that was what they were taught.
The government is run by Big Money who perpetuate these desires for bling with ads and a constant barrage of consumer brainwashing.
People need to take responsibility and stop that shit.
It's ashame our own so called blacks have solded us out to what you are talking about. For example, bob johnson, micheal jordan, RAP Artists, R & B artists, The C.E.O of AMerican express credit card. It's mostly our own people that are being used by these companies to target us.
Black people are the NUMERO UNO spenders in america...we have a spending power of 800 billion dollars...and it goes to white people, asians, and then arabs. If we start spending on black business, we could really move up. Black people think that they have to spend with white people in order to be "in"...I don't understand. And all of these videos on BET makes it worse.
Get rid of the TVs, for people who have the weak minds. Does EVERY pair of jeans in her closet HAVE to be Baby Phat??
Phuck all that dumb shit...once my situation is tight, then i'll think about how serious I want my wardrobe to be. EVEN THEN, it'll probably be t-shirts, a couple of button downs, couple pair of Timbs, and some J's...i'm lookin' for black owned businesses to come up in the clothing industry. I'm gonna stop buying the Polo and Armani colognes too...I want African oils man.
That's exactly what it is. Who cares what the next man/woman looks like. As long as there is a roof over your head, food on your table and your children are taken care of, who cares?
No disrepect 212 but it not laughin matter too me however there has always been a epidemic here in the U.S where ppl live beyond there means especially lower income ppl..An yes i was once guilty of that behavior at one time but awaken its also about keepin up appearence and could be a renerational domino effect for most!!
On point. I think brainwashing is a factor as well. Not trying to place blame on the "MAN, or "SYSTEM", but there's some truth in it. As kids we have been taught if we don't have name brand, we are ostracized. We have become a cash cow for fortune 500 companies because of our spending and we broke. Heck, I know blacks in the burbs leaving beyond their means as well. With brainwashing comes a detachment for one's focus or "PRIORITIES" in their life.
What you just explained along with our religion, style, etc. is used against us by black faces being used by this system to keep us in the land of node.
You have to admit though, that most of this ostracizing comes right from our own people. They simply need to realize that they can not keep up with the Joneses because they don't have it. Once they acknowledge this, they can solve the issue. Simple.
I wouldnt call it brainwashing. Call it what it is. Greed and peer pressure. Ppl afraid of being different. A black culture that ridicules ppl who think differently than the masses. So we get a cookie cutter mold of what we think we should be. And no one going outside of the mold for fear of rejection.
Many of us are so "status quo!" They dont embrace differences. Instead differences are frowned upon. Everyone is supposed to act a like think a like and dress alike...
Yes that is true, but why are black american s being primary the only group targeted for these companies. Everything that is done against us is an scientific method used to try to make us feel, act, and think a certain way to keep us bonded, and what misslady212 just described is one of the main reason's we are bonded.
I call it "coon" mentality...no need to do everything in excess its dumb...and your giving back to the system of white supremacy that enslaves none-whites...I blame black ppl for being sooo ignorant...
yup...but it has to do with POVERTY and the NEED TO FEEL REASSURED BY OTHER PPL...look at WHITE PPL...when they got money...most ppl don't even know except they a damn CELEB...black men and women are to blame...and the capitalist society...lmfao
Here is a funny story. This dude I used to hang out with in NYC used to be the best dressed dude I know. Flashy Harlem dude. Everything on him FRESH & NEW!
One day I had the opportunity to go to his house...
This kid was sleeping on the floor! No bed! No furniture! Very few dishes. Very little food.... He was basically living in an empty apartment. It was a studio apartment at that. a room with a kitchen in it basically.
He still had his shoe boxes lining the floor of his crib. & $100 Jeans!
Outside of his apartment he looked like he had a lot of dough. In reality he was struggling... Living in a shyt hole!...
Another guy I know is a semi famous rapper, or was at the time. He also had clothes galore. His apartment told another story altogether... POVERTY! They dont show you that part on the videos!
And yet one more famous rapper i know spends all of his advances on jewelry. Show money goes to clothes & chains... He still lives with his sons mother... ITS RIDICULOUS!

Some people I know who got SUVs, big flat screen TVs, McMansions and is on the edge of bankruptcy. Budget and invest.
Like I said, dumbing down and mindless consumption is another way for the elite to control the general population.

Oh, I meant a detachment FROM one's focus or priorities.

That's exactly what it is: status quo.

I call it "coon" mentality...no need to do everything in excess its dumb...and your giving back to the system of white supremacy that enslaves none-whites...I blame black ppl for being sooo ignorant...

MissLady212 3 years ago

WOW. His son's mother?! There's a lack of something within these people from these areas. It's definitely a mental issue.
When are they going to understand that you can't dress like Jay-Z and Beyonce...because you don't have Jay-Z and Beyonce money!Simple.
