I think the issue of history conflict is primarily a legacy of Cold War and the communism-capitalist struggle. However, Japanese people as a whole have little interest in politics.
It is in China's own interests to have good relations with Japanese people. However, as China is rising, it feels the need to correct accumulated humiliation in the past 150 years.

The real reason why HK has the highest portion of it's population being rich, is because when the British were in control, they imposed NO regulations, no minimum wage, no nothing. They almost had no presence in HK aside from build street and make a few laws. But within only a 2generations from the 50's-90 Hk went from rags to riches.

The other thing is we are a product of evolution- which is never perfect.
