I hope the movie (which generally got good reviews) has more respect for history than the trailer. Using music that's universally identified with the late '30s (written in 1936, recorded 1937) with imagery of people from the 1920s (dancing, no less) is just cheesy.
I could not help but to cry sometimes, beautiful acting, music and storyline. It capture the passage of the silent movie era to the roaring 20's & beyond. I loved the irony of one the main lines in the film when Goodman tells him that theaudiences (or the Studio to be more precise) want change, fresh faces & talking movies. Also, that the audience or the studios are always right. Sadly, all that change got us where we are now after losing all that magic movies had once. What it, it deserves it.
despite whatever few flaws it may have from what i see, the film seems like it's going to capture the 20s and 30s better than any other film made today! and monsieur dujardin REALLY looks like he stepped out of a time capsule! looks EXACTLY like a star from those times! this is the sort of film hollywood should make nowadays: done the classic style, with just the right actors and music, and everything else.
This is a masterpiece. The music is not anachronistic at all, see the movie and make your conclusions after. It happens that the film is settled from 1927 to 1935 or 1937, that justifies using "sing sing sing ", right?Regarding the acting of the leading actress, she is great. You see, this is a meditation on the history of cinema, with lots of humor though, and in some stretches of the movie is "real life", so the actress is not acting, while in others she is. Great Hazanavicius, where were you?
@aa923bbcc The Wikipedia page says it runs from 1927-1933, but it could be wrong. It doesn't matter; the trailer looks absurd, with a bunch of 1920s people seeming to dance to music that didn't exist yet. I thought "Sing Sing Sing" was only played in the trailer; hope so.
marysdri - First off I agree with you, the music in the trailer is not actually in the film. The film has an original score that is amazing. It is irritating that they used a commercially popular track to excite an american audience. However, you clearly just did a quick google search on the music and don't actually know what you are talking about. Louis Prima did write a song named "Sing sing sing. But not this one. The one in the trailer was done by Benny Goodman.
@elduder01 I also only did a "quick google search", so I'm no expert, though I already knew Benny Goodman did it. Wikipedia says it was written with lyrics by Louis Prima, then the first instrumental version was by Goodman. Of course, the way jazz was improvised, Goodman's version may well have been radically altered from the original.
This movie is completely spoiled by its anachronistic soundtrack. The setting should be 1927, but the opening swing number, "Sing, sing, sing", written in 1935 by Louis Prima, is all wrong and destroys any credibility. Other music seems to evoke the 40s and 50s. Couldn't they have chosen music that actually matches the period, like Dixieland? This disconnect turns the film's intentional fun-phoniness into plain ignorance and is so jarring that I really don't want to see the film after all.
Theme playing from min 1:26: "Almost Martyrs" (Music from the Motion Picture "The Life of Davis Gale") Album: The Academy Studio Orchestra. The Director's Choice: Alan Parker - Music from His Movies". Enjoy.
The movie, The Artist, looks amazing from this trailer. I can see they studied films to make this movie. It looks like scenes from Citizen Kane, early movies like Sullivan's Travels, Chaplin/Keaton and Marx Brothers. I have to see this!
@nadjadee go see it, you wont be dissapointed! its great! A daring bet like this needs people to support it by going to wach it, its a miracle such a film was recently made. Its the kind of film you should watch in a theater, really, far better than downloading it.
a few years ago I had ideas and started writing a modern silent movie...its alot like this actually. someone beat me to it :( thats the business! still looks lovely and plan to see it!
This movie looks great, but I also can't wait to see "The Silent Life". The silent life is about the same actor, but it was the original version as they started planning in 2005. I think that "The Silent Life
" may very well be as or more fascinating because it is in color and because the director was a heavy stutterer and so his artistic choise to make the movie silent will be apparent. The trailer looks amazing. Copy and paste if you can't wait to see "The Artist" and "The Silent Life"!
Saw an early screening tonight at MoMA & was transfixed with this stunning vision. I hope the film gets the audiences that it so richly deserves. Take the whole family...suitable for all. To quote the director during the Q & A/talkback regarding working with the Jack Russell in the film: "You think he's the best acting dog in the world but really it's all about the sausages (that the lead actor has in his pocket). From this I learned to find what my other collaborators "sausages" were."

Looks boring and the leading lady does not look like a star from the 20's. Even with the clothes, hair and makeup she still looks and acts modern.

@1234567movielover How can "TheSilent Life" be about "the same actor"? The actor in this movie is a fictional character.
