The original is a burlesque on the whole early '80's synth pop/rock frenzy. I just listened to the Elastica version. Good musicians, but not much taste. They just don't get it. If you're gonna cover one of the most original song's of the Eighties, your cover better be something special. You gotta have an idea, not just a bunch of sneering vocals and bleached out mesa-boogie guitar...Elastica should try and come up with better material, because they could be a lot better.

to understand that, you have to know that Trio were in fact a punk band (other songs from the album are in a very differnt musical style) who kind of "seized" this tv-show, which mostly featured bourgeois german 'schlager' music before to cause a little scandal with this performance. (just watch the stunned faces of the grannies in the audience @2:20 ... - awesome!!) - they even changed the song text to "dieter thomas heck" @1:50, which was the name of the showmaster, to ridicule him... :-D

As an American/German i feel like I gotta say something here. If you don't understand German you might not get the genius of Trio. They have a really sophisticated dry sense of humor that really comes across in German and not really on the english version of their album. That's what made them so huge for a few years in Germany and they even broke in the US like a few others (Nina Hagen, Einstuerzende, etc) My point is don't be so quick to pass judgement till you know the whole story.
