@KidDexxx - Background defocus is only for still shots. You can use manual focus to do some cool effects in video mode, though. Check out my vids- v=ARYvfFdCalw and v=AZQEuZZBICw

@kaselaz - The quality is high enough for BluRay. I use Sony Vegas for editing video and rendering for BluRay. :)

I tried the defocus and got this message "could not perform defocus". Not sure what to do now.

@phillips00702 - Sometimes you have to try a couple of times. Make sure the reading at the bottom of the screen is accurate for the distance between the camera and subject and also make sure that there is little to no movement for the subject.

@spearmintmonkey - Hi! I remember we talked about the HX1 vs HX100V a few months back. Yes, I started out with a bias towards the HX1, but the HX100V has really become my go-to camera. A few sites have listed the HX100V as being discontinued; however, I haven't seen anything official from Sony, yet. If it's true, then I look forward to hearing what the successor will be. I am a little concerned that the HX100V is a little too good, at this price point, if you know what I mean...

I was doing this mode for some indoor portraits and they turned out terrible. The blur effect was not consistent and gave spots of blur on the subject randomly, along with spots of sharpness to the the background. I was disappointed. Anyone else have this problem? I my camera defective?

@TheChosenRed - No, the background defocus is a new mode on the Sony cameras used for processing still images. In order to achieve a background blur with video, you can use the manual focus ring when shooting video. Check out my tips and tricks video on manual focus for video. :)
