  • I think that Anita was HUGE for a long time, deservedly so, but was eclipsed by those with better press and connections, and sadly enough, less addiction issues. But, she kicked her habit, got back on her feet , and by the eighties was performing again. Youtube has some videos of her performing in the 2000's,amazing, it seems she lost almost NOTHING!

Anita, Ella, Sarah, they were BRILLIANT, and so very important, as far as sheer musicianship and talent, Anita takes the day hands down.

  • @trippintonk Profound accurate, says it all, Anita was underrated, and sadly because as someone said on here, she loved to well and not too wisely. Had she been more politically minded she'd have had world recognition for her talent. BUT we can see her and hear her still thank God and thank UT !!

  • amazing! I love you Anita!!!

  • Thanks so much for posting this and sharing it with us all. I appreciate it. Never heard this before, and of course I love it!

  • Best female jazz vocalist of all time. And yes, that includes Sarah and Ella. Anita had better tone, feel, phrasing and interpretation of lyrics.

  • anita is wonderful of couse...but better than ella or sarah?...come on now thats ludicrous:(

  • WHy? She has a better tome than either of them. (Ella can be a bit corny when sing ballads). She conveys a lyric better than Sarah, who sometimes is more interested in showing off technique. And her phrasing is far more developed. Ella scats almost exclusively in the pentatonic scale. Sarah uses octave jumps and diatonic scales. Anita sings real chromatic jazz. She may be the most underrated singer of all time.

  • very good points! and im an absolute fan of anita! sarah has better tone with many more colors...i agree about ellas ballads...epecially whe she did the songbooks...but when not restrained she is great...check out her Summertime in Berlin...I dont think Anita is underrated at all...jazz lovers respect her 100%! i cant say she is better than ella or sarah...like i said "its ludicrous"...its lke trying to compare ella, dinah, and betty..all were great!

  • @plangentmusic Are you out of your mind??? Anita is up there, hands down, but to compare any of the greats is just dumb. Each of them has a special quality that made them great: Ella:Versatility; Sarah:Operatic range; Billy:Instrumental Mimickry; Anita:Speed; Carmen;Phrasing; Blossom:Caberet's/Cafe Society; Astrud:Airy & Latin; Nina:Theatrics; Dinah Washington:Torch Singer; Julie London:Balladeer: June Christy: Cool Jazz Icon; Betty Carter:Improvisation. Nancy Wilson:Chanteuse.

  • @RexKennedy77 Anita isn't comparable to the "greats." LOL. Rent a pair of ears.

  • @plangentmusic Your answer shows that you're really an Anita fan, rather than a jazz fan. You only compare her to 2 of the most popular artists in the genre, keeping your evidence quite topical, making no reference to composers, arrangers, sets, etc. Instead, you focus on perceived style, without evidence. But it's my mistake, I should have read your other comments first to know who I was dealing with. My apologies. Good Day

  • @RexKennedy77 Interesting how you make assumptions. So because I make 2 comparisons and not mention composers (which has nothing to do with the topic at hand) I'm not a jazz fan? I have no evidence? I'm not worth "dealing with." You may want to lose that arrogant attitude. It just makes you look foolish. In the meantime, check out plangentmusic jazz on Youtube.

  • Aomtic Tea!

    Thanks for posting!

  • Nice info tab Duarte.

  • Interesting comparing this to her wildly amusing 'Jazz on a summers day ' version.

  • Thanks for posting this! It brought the Japan concert of 1963 album to my attention and I just bought it digitally. I love Anita O'Day and this album has a lot of her greatest "hits." She's one of my jazz role models.

  • Look also for the DVD.

  • Never heard this GREAT version! Thanks!

  • she was always amazing doing this song.

  • lol at "salt peanuts, salt peanuts." What a musician!
