As a kid I "tamed" a super scared feral cat. I did it by slowly approaching her (did it for some days), talked to her and showed her I was no threat. In a couple of days I got close to her and could even pet her, and she enjoyed it a lot. Once I was petting her, then my aunt came and tried to do the same, but when the cat smelled her hand she jumped up and ran away as fast as she could. My sister though managed to get quite close too though. It shows that it's not always an impossible feat. ^^
